Is this a stock motor? (ORIGINAL)

I know the lifter retainer was different in my 92 but since this is a 93 I thought I would ask if there is something off about this motor? Pistons look like stockers to me so if it is a different motor at least they did it with the turbo in mind.

not a stock engine, the hold down for the lifters look different, but there are some replacement engines with the same

Im not too worried about it honestly. For one, I can fix anything that goes wrong with this thing. Her alternative was a 00 Volvo. While that car MAY have had less problems, I would have been in the dark and it would have cost us tons of money in any kind of failure. I know my way around the TY so that was a big factor. Plus, she has always wanted one. While I didn't make her sign a notice, she was made fully aware of the potential problems these trucks get in to. She wanted it and yes, she is happy. She just wants to drive it:lol: She'll be back on the road by Saturday. Only reason it will take that long is because of Thanksgiving and all the madness.

So if the piston is "dished", does that mean it could still be 9.5:1? I vaguely remember my pistons looking like these but then, it has been a LONG time.

Re: Is this a stock motor? (ORIGINAL)

You brought up what your pistons looked like. So I assumed they were in your truck. So I searched and found that, which appears to be your pistonsin your truck. Am I wrong? Add to that the fact that you said a LONG time, I figured a year may be in that time frame.

How long is a LONG time?

Try not to part this one out.

What are you talking about? The truck I did part out had already been stripped down and that was back in 07. I mainly parted out the shell which needed more than 15,000 to turn in to a decent truck. The link you posted is MY Ty that I have owned since 2003. The motor in question, the one I posted the pic of, is in the Ty we bought for my wife last month that needs a head gasket. You seemed confused and I really am not sure why you posted that since it had absolutely nothing to do with what I am working on currently.

When I said it had been a LONG time, I meant that it had been a long time since I had seen a stock piston. When I bought my Ty, I replaced the fuel pump, ecm, transmission and engine all in the first year of ownership. I vaguely remember what they looked like but had replaced them with different style pistons.

FYI, I have a GM Typhoon replacement (crate) motor in my truck and it also had the revised plastic guides. Can't guaranty if my comp ratio is stock, but I have had the engine in the truck for 10k miles or so (10 years too), and a lot of 16-20psi runs with no issues at all. Mine came as a complete long block, so I have never seen the pistons.

Yeah our truck definitely performs well. Doesn't feel like it would have a high compression. It is still on the stock chip, at 15psi the looked great on the scanner. So my guess would be it has stock compression.

Re: Is this a stock motor? (ORIGINAL)

I know the situation. I was comparing the pistons in that thread, the ones in your Ty to the ones in this thread, that are in your wife's Ty. Someone mentioned the 9.5:1 CR in this thread. I was pointing out that you also mentioned it in the other one, with pistons that were not stock and had only 2 eyebrows instead of 4 like DaveP pointed out about the engine in question.

No confusion here.

Off topic but I hope you are aware that the pistons in the engine in this picture are installed upside down.

THATS WHY MY CRANK BROKE IN HALF!!! :rotf: I know, I caught it before I went any further. That was about a year ago. I felt like an ass for sure.
