Help, it blew up on me already!

Well, damn.

Looks like the Ty has already lost it's first part :)

So today I was driving along in the rain, and the truck started to develop a miss. Sounded like it was running on
5 cylinders. So, being 40 miles from home and my destination, I continued to drive to my friend's place. It was
dark out and her underground parking has horrible lighting, so I left to pick up my girlfriend.

On the way there, my headlights died. After my headlights died, the check engine light came on and the voltage shot
up to 18, deep in the red :(

Taking my foot off the gas and letting the truck idle, and the voltage dropped down back to about 11, so it was
draining. Between stoplights, the light indicating that the torque converter was locked up was flashing on and off every few seconds even with my foot and the speed ( 50 mph ) not changing at all.

The truck sounds fine when you're not on the gas, it seems to run on all 6. When you give it anything more than
1/10th throttle it sounds terrible! The highbeams worked to drive on for about 10 minutes, then they went out!

What the!

So here it is, I am at my girlfriend's place, no highbeams, no headlights, check engine light, 4 out of 6 cylinders
and worst of all,(I didn't drink until I got here) almost out of alcohol so I can only have half a beer before I drag myself to bed. Tomorrow I
guess the first thing I will check is the alternator and the fuses. The truck ran great before it rained, after it
got a little wet, it ran a little rough, once it got really wet, it ran like ass!

Anyone ever heard of something like this?

Any other suggestions?

Bad ground or Bad alternator causing low voltage, which will effect your electrical system...

+1 on the ground. I had a very similar problem w/ my Sy when I first got it. Rain triggered it.:2cents:

Re: Help, it blew up on me already!

The increase in voltage could very well be the ALT especially if it was enough to pop your lights. This happened to me in my old Vette. It was kinda funny cause itwas an 80 so the interior lighting such as the Intrument cluster was always fairly dim. Well, one night it got super bright and my and I went to put the windows up incase the car died and I had to leave it outside and the power windows shot up so fast it scared the hell out of me. Ild definately check your ALT first.

When not on the gas last night the hazard blinkers wouldn't flash, only stay on, ahaha

Just woke up, going to check the grounds first

is this Jer's old typhoon? Did you make a second screenname?

Yeah, and yeah, I forgot my password hehe and I'm not at home to receive my reminder email :p

I should ask Jer what model Alternator since other people have gone through the powermasters pretty quickly

didn't he leave a new set of plugs for you to do a tuneup with? Saying he just didn't have time to do it, and also what to set the gaps at? You need to learn to keep up w/ these trucks from the get go. Otherwise you'll surely destroy it.

Yep I put the new plugs in and gapped them to .28, truck ran great!

Everything ran great until it rained :(

I went outside, checked all the grounds and they looked fine.

The update is that I went to start it and the battery is totally dead. :(

Now, what would cause the battery to drain out over night, it started fine after sitting for an hour last night? Hmmm. I left nothing on.

Renz knows from experience ;)

Re: Help, it blew up on me already!

Come to think about it, my Mustang did this when I had one of the plates inside the battery broken, somewhat similar, the car was running off the alternator while driving and the battery would barely hold a charge, hmmmm

well...did you get water on your alt? do you have wheel wells in? Did you check your plug wires for cuts and continuity. Make sure your wires are good - check them w/ a multimeter and see what kind of resistence they show

The hood has a pair of vents, one being directly over the alternator. I'm positive water got inside the alternator

Re: Help, it blew up on me already!

the peg of my stock alt was loose and would sometimes charge and sometimes wouldn't. The guys at advance auto tested the alt and it showed to be fine - while it was testing i then jiggled the peg a bit (much to the advanced autos guy's dismay - he thought i was going to fry myself i guess  ) and the voltage output dropped to 0. Just something to check.

water in the alt isn't a great thing. Could even cuase an overcharge situation - have you checked your fuses?

Don't drive that truck in the rain with that hood. The driver vent is over the alternator and the passanger side almost over the intake.

Z-34 vents with no drain=issues.

Got it started, charging system seems fine, now there is a definite tick that increases with the RPMs from the passenger side. Sounds like from the last cylinder on the passenger side.

Tap goes away / can't hear it passed 2,000 rpms

Loud exhaust though, hehe

Is this a add on? I have never heard of this before.
