I'm having a block cryod

I found a guy in tampa that will cryo my whole block and crank for 200 . My question is , do I bore out and 4-bolt my block before cryo , or do all the machining after ?? It will be easier for me to do it after , since I dont have all the 4-bolt parts yet .He said it would not matter , and I'd have to measure them with a laser to see the differance from before and after the cryogenic process .

He reccommended I cryo everything , the whole rotating assembly and all . He actually said the whole motor , but I really dont know what all that would involve . I was more siked about having someone local that can do this that allows me to avoid the shipping the block somewhere . I cant see plunking down the 2-3k for a bowtie block , so cryo and partial block filler after the cryo is my plan . Searching on the internet has yielded nothing but rave reviews , so it seems like cheap insurance to do ahead of time . So does anyone know if machining after cryo will hurt ?

I will have to see how big his freezer is . If I put wheels on my jack stands , I can roll it right in .

I'd ask your machienest... see what he says.. or somone who Cryo's automotive stuff for a living.
I know the block is harder after it's done. May want to do some more calling and research before doing the big chill.

The different alloys will react differently to the heat treatment. I don't know for sure, but it makes sense to me to have machine work done after the treatment, because the metal will swell.

The OD on my crankshaft journals swelled by about .001 after nitriding. This might not sound like much, but that would bite into bearing clearance. The journals were polished after the surface treatment.

Re: I'm having a block cryod

I talked to a guy at a local engine machine shop , and he said to do whatever treatments I want first , and then bring it in . He really didnt sound real knowledgeable with the cryo process , except he has heard it helps out alot .

How much more of a diff will it make (worth it)if I cryo then nitride my crank ?

I just cryo'd a block crank, rods everything. I did all the machine work before I sent it.

Do the machine work first - otherwise it makes it harder for boring and such. Ask your own machine shop guy just to be sure, you won't want to piss him off...

+1

.. nitriding is a surface treatment designed to help with wear. it does add to the strength but not like cryo.... cryo strengthens the component all the way thru the part. have the machine work done first. i had my entire rotating assy done and everything came back in the specs it was sent in. :2cents:

Cryo it first then get the machining done. This way you will not have to recheck clearances etc. It makes not diff as far as boring etc. If anything it is easier to machine after it is cryo treated.
