Need help with Ostrich purchase

I want to make sure I am doing this right. I dont care about the money I want to make sure I have exactly everything I need here. My plan is this...

1. Electric FP gauge
2. New Boost gauge that can read up to 30 psi (mine only goes to 20)
3. Ostrich
4. Tuner Pro RT
5. WB o2. Stand alone gauge style
6. G1 Adapter

I guess the first two dont really matter but am wondering if this is everything I need to make the Ostrich work? Also, can I use this with other types of vehicles? Can I actually burn a chip with it? I should be getting this within the month of December and want my ordering to go smoothly. Any help is greatly appreciated.

If you are thinking of burning chips and using the ostrich , get the G1 kit that comes with the zif socket and 2 chips .If you want multiple bins to switch through on each chip , then get the g3 . The ostrich only emulates and wont get a bin off or on a chip for you . The burn1 does that . Its less than 100 bucks .

Yes, absolutely yes. Just like most things in life, you will find that once you get into the thick of things it is much easier than expected.

The ostrich will let you use tunerpro to change your bins before you burn them. That way you don't burn a bin, then have to retune and burn another bin. The ostrich will pay for itself + after you settle in on your burn you could probably sell it for close to what you paid for it.

Why would I need to sell it? I know Im not thinking right here but seems I would be better off keeping it. Is the Ostrich not necassary for tuning? Wait never mind, I think Im starting to get how all this works. I can load my "bin" on to tuner pro, keep the O in the truck and play with the settings meanwhile savingit to tuner pro. Then youre saying that when I get a good tuen going , I can burn a chip and pull the O out? This would save me the hassle of constantly burning chips. Is this right? So other than what I have listed in my parts list, what else do I need, i.e. what is it called on the Moates site? Any links.

Once you play with ostrich, you don't even want to burn chips anymore. Anymore I just permanetly install ostrich in trucks, run USB under dash and be done with it.

A truck is never 100% tuned. IMO.

Re: Need help with Ostrich purchase

A bin is the name of the file stored on the chip.

The Ostrich remembers the contents of the bin, and is easily read by both the ECM in your truck and your computer (laptop preferred). TunerPro lets you decifer the bin file. Bin files are all numbers, Tunerpro puts it mostly in plain english and sorts the data with an XDF file so you can undertsand it. You make the changes you want, and send the new bin file to the Ostrich in seconds, and the truck responds accordingly. The Ostrich will remember its current bin file contents for quite some time- years if I remember correctly. You probably never need to burn an actual chip to place back into your ecm. I bet you will have the Ostrich in there full time for months, making an occasional change here or there even when your not actively tuning every day or even every weekend. Its so simple to make changes that you will find yourself making minor changes quite frequently. If and when you are finally through playing around, you can burn this new/improved file that you custom tailored to your truck onto a chip. Install the chip and put your dashboard back together, and your done.

If you think you would want to burn chips more frequently, yet retain the emulation (read data and make tuning changes while driving) then look into an Autoprom. This is still a Moates creation. Or you could get the Ostrich and a burn1, or another Eprom programmer it doesnt matter which brand. I have a Willem that works great, and is totally USB powered. It burns damn near any kind of chip and it was under $50.

To plug the Ostrich or Autoprom into your ecm you need an adapter. This allows you to install a new chip without removing or damaging your old/stock one. There are G1's and G3's to choose from, from Moates. The Ostrich and Autoprom have ribbon cables that have a simulated chip on one end. That simulated chip will plug into your adapter in your ECM and stay there while the device is hooked up.

I hope this helped. There is another thread in this section with all this info and some great pictures describing all this stuff too.

Re: Need help with Ostrich purchase

I wouldn't worry about burning chips because are you serioulsy going to be removing/replacing chips on a regular basis each time your tune changes?? especially after using the ostrich haha.. another cool thing is the ability to remove the ostrich when parking in dark areas or places your not comfortable with.. no ostrich or chip = no stolen syty.

Re: Need help with Ostrich purchase

If you know someone with a burner, you can email them your bin once you've got it dialed in and they can burn it and mail you the chip. Probably cost you $5 for the 29C256 chip and $1-2 for shipping.

Or if there are a few local syty'rs, you can be the one with the Ostrich and someone else can get the burner and you tune the trucks and they burn the chips.

Guess upoon thinking about it I figured if I get good enough with the tuning, I can burn chips for local guys. I always like to help out even though noone around here helps me out at all. Excluding a certain few from Salida and Denver. Im getting really excited and cant wait to get all this.

Re: Need help with Ostrich purchase

Tuning is an odd animal, at first your scared to try it. It seems so overwhelming.

Then once you learn the basics you can't stop, and find new things to try, do, improve, etc.

Then you look back and go why didn't I do that a long time ago, it is easy.

I just got off active duty awhile back (Army) and some of our guys did some training out at Ft. Carson. For some reason I thought that you might be in the service (crazy people own Sys and Crazy people join the Military so I just put 2 and 2 together...).

I downloaded 5 bins from Moates but I have no idea which one to use. Changed the oil today and found a nice deep gash in my front left tire...so no driving until I get some new rims/tires. Ball joint may be bad as the inner left tire is completely worn.

Im sure it will become easy. Like I said, I cant wait to get into it. May end up leaving the wife for it who knows?

Re: Need help with Ostrich purchase

another option...the moates g3 will allow you to swap between multiple bins (up to 16) like the ultimate. this will allow for "on the fly" changes between tunes for fueling, timing, open/close loop, alcohol, boost..etc.
