Need help!!!

I took my sy to a shop that is known to work on our trucks and they were not able to use there scan tool. It would not communicate with the ecm and would not except its vin #. My question is----- Would the ult chip (version 1) prevent the scan tool from operating properly?

Thanks for any input

What scan tool? What shop?

No the Ultimate would not keep a scanner from reading.

Where are you at? Maybe someone local with datamaster can help you out.

I would imagine if they were experienced in our trucks you wouldnt have to be asking this question.

Re: Need help!!!

Not to jack the thread but I got the same problem on one of my Ty's and it's bone stock. Swapped proms and ecm's with three known good ones. Tried a OTC Nemisis & 3000, also a Snap-on scanner. Truck runs fine no dtc's or MIL's and can flash the MIL with the jumper on the ALDL. No visible damge to wiring or connectors. I'm stumped! Have not tried Tuner Pro yet but I have serious doubts if it will work. Same symptoms of will not communicate with the ecm and would not except its vin # as nm156 above. Anyone have a clue??

Re: Need help!!!

When I hear you guys say that it wont accept the vin- all I think is that you should update to newer scanning software. Is that Diacom or something? If it flashes the CEL then it should be sending data. Maybe its a laptop or cable problem.

Don't know which scan tool....the shop is Toms performance in vancouver, washington. and was referred by a local syty owner.

Here it is in a nut shell.......Codes 42,45......driving down the road truck is running great then all of a sudden it starts sputtering and the tach starts spiking hard and then it stalls. This is what the 180.00 dallar visit to the shop found out...after it stalls the injecters keep running and neg side of the coil flickering....they recomend changing the pick-up coil, or should I just replace the whole dist ?

Man that's gotme stumped? Not having the truck in diag. mod at the time of the problem is hard to "second guess". Best way to find problems like this is real time with a scanner hooked up and logging at the time of failure. I by the way have the latest updates of all the scanners I listed above (have all of them in my shop) and I still can not connect to my ALDL or read a data stream?

2 different problems.... actually, possibly the same problem.

If the scantool won't take the VIN for the vehicle, that's a pretty good indicator that the scan tool doesn't support the vehicle, or that it needs a different software module. This is an issue with the scan tool, not your truck.

No comms can be lots of different things. Most commonly, bad grounds.

You're not even getting in the door if the scan tool isn't taking the VIN. I'd e-mail the manu and find out whether or not your software supports it.

Another option - find a turbo Sunbird VIN and feed that in there. Our ECM isn't "VIN locked" like some of the later OBDII stuff is. If it takes the sunbird VIN, you should be able to connect.

Are you using the same cable through all of this? I wa having a hell of a time hooking up to my truck and other trucks but ithad turned out to be a bad cable. I had to borrow one from someone I sold one to.
