SyTy Friends and Stories

In the theme of things I think everybody has realized in a time of tragedy how close we are as a group of friends here on the board. Sure things happen, heck I have had some dispuits myself with people on the board/group. In the end though they are all minor though.

I have a lot of good stories and friends through this board. I think it would be great to start a thread talking about how a fellow syty owner either

Here is my start.

Back in 1998 I bought my typhoon. It was totalled and sat outside for a year. I spent 7 months fixing it up, and ready for the 1999 syty nats event. At the time I lived in Washington just south of Seattle.

3 of us left Seattle for the 2000mile 1 way adventure (Paul, Richard Le, and myself). We met up with Ed O'Roake in Boise for a caravan of 4 people.

1 speeding ticket and a good story later, and a day or so we ended up at Dabney's house in Colorado. Now I had never physically met Dabney, but he put all of us up in his house for the night. 4 strangers coming into your house for the evening you have never met. We even stole some parts from his ty, to try to fix a stuck WG on my own truck.

I have many more stories, this is just one of the first I have.

Re: SyTy Friends and Stories

Nats 99. I had only owned my truck for a year, but in that time I had become good friends with the famed Sean Morris. It wasnt too long that SoCal and FAST had teamed up and before you knew it, we had stickered all of the Double Tree. Sean brought 6' SoCal SyTy stickers. One made it on the front sign by the road, another up in one of the elevators on the ceiling. Stickers on hotel doors, hallways, trucks, everything.....

To this day, there is still remnants of a remaining SoCal sticker placed perfectly on a piece of abstract art in the hallway.

I also gathered up everyones "No Mustangs" magnets and stuck them all over my truck and drove around for the day. Went out to go get some food and pulled along a Mustang to which the owner just stared, shook his head and said "no f'ing way..." We left hard and proved that the magnets were there for a reason

Re: SyTy Friends and Stories

My favorite SyTy memory was on the way to the 03 SyTy nats.

You can see my Ty in the background. Shortly after this was taken I came up along side the truck and Sean pulls a Miller out of the cooler reaches over the side of the truck and offers my Dad a beer.

These trucks... I could go on for days about the effect syty land has had on me and my friends. I've run the gamot of relationships, from finding a typhoon owner that turned out to be the dad I never had, and me the son he never had; to battling the keyboard warrior from hell.
I have watched fellow SyTy'rs marry, divorce, have kids, get lung cancer, beat lung cancer, die from cancer, get arrested, get promoted, get fired, buy houses, lose houses, break parts, evade tickets, win races, lose races, move to another state, burn out, burn on, get degree, get old...

I go out to my garage and I dont see a truck right now. That thing has been in and around or part of many lives. Right now I look at it and see something that has a bit of us all in it somewhere.

Re: SyTy Friends and Stories

Besides getting to meet and become friends with a bunch of SyTy folks at Tom's (V8EATER) in San Jose, my Sy has been my ticket back to the drags. Last time was in the 60's. Made some new friends and am becoming "known." Which is kinds cool for this old guy. :rotf:

Special thanks to all here for some of my DAQ's, especially the early ones. I look back at some of my old posts and think "did I write that?"

Re: SyTy Friends and Stories

Lots of great times with the trucks and guys, but my favorite story is Joe's new Aspen Blue Ty.

Joe's wife Christina decided that she wanted a blue Ty.So Joe say's "you find one,I'll get it"

Unbeknownst to him, there has been a 50k mile 92 Aspen AZ truck on Autotrader for 3 months. She finds it in about 10 minutes,so it's ON.

Joe has a board member check it out.It is NICE.so he works out a deal.

Christina and her mom fly from Nashville to AZ to pick it up and drive home

Joe calls me and says they got a new Ty.He doesn't sound giddy at all (as I would be)

So I head over to his house with my box of "gently used" ignition parts.I talk to Joe about the truck. He is not happy with it's performance,AT ALL. But it is a low mile no rust Aspen.

I figure it has the wrong plugs, and worn ignition (They pretty much all usually do) so we popped the hood and dug into it.

First plug out.I don't know what the **** it was (um no electrode, not burt off it just didn't have a damn electrode) We R&R the complete ignition.Go to start it and it just cranks.Oh **** I broke his new toy. (put the wires on the dist cap backwards.DOH.)

Figure that out, adjust the TV cable, then we take it for a spin. OMFG It freaking screams. Joe is basically estatic and has a permagrin. SWEET.

So we take it back to his house. He calls Christina out to go for a spin. He's got shotgun,I'm just watching from the driveway. I see this:

She takes off.The truck squats, throws it's nose in the air, does the 1-2 shift, then slams on the brakes and stops. HUH?

They come back after a spin around the block, and Joe tels me what happened.

When Christina took off,and it was stupid fast and SLAMMED the 1-2 shift,it freaked her out, because she had just driven the thing across country. So she slams on the brakes, looks at Joe and says "It didn't used to do that before"

First time I launched with the wife on board she said "Don't ever do that to me again." She's very susceptible to motion sickness and darn near puked so she's safe.

Re: SyTy Friends and Stories

I have made lts of great friends from my truck from former owners to the guys here, I have had a guy start himself on fire in the garage ( i told him twice it was hot) Painted my driveway for dropping stuff. Made 2 kids I didnt know scrape under coat off the frame because they were tardy to class. Depleated a bank account several times. busted more knuckles, banged my head, more times than I can count. But at the end of the day I love that piece of poo and have all the guys here This buds for you
"mr sy/ty owner guy" we salute you

Re: SyTy Friends and Stories

I've been around for a minute or two. Back when the line between an internet friend , and a friend very much existed. The crazy notion of meeting up with "friends" you met on the computer. People with common interests. Different backgrounds, different areas they live, but with a common interest.

I guess for us that are a little older(not ancient), the internet was and maybe still is, a novel thing. There are so many people that I call friends that I have met though here. I am not always on here a lot, but I still keep friends with several people I have met on here. People that have moved on to other things, and people that are still doing similar stuff.

Death is a difficult thing. Its hard to know what to say, think, or feel. I am sure there are people that may think certain displays or gestures may be inappopriate. I don't know where I am going with this, but just reading about someone wanting motor oil scented flowers, bringing someones cars to a funeral, wearing a nationals shirt to a funeral, things like that.Kind of weird to some, but what someone would have wanted. When I pass, someone had better do an 8,000 rpm off the two step, launch leaving......not to focus on the passing, but to think about life.

In the beginning I managed to meet up with other SoCal guys, and we had a lot of good times though the years. Street racing, hanging out.The guys from Chicago. Chicago is like my second home. I feel comfortable in Chicago. Lots of friends around up there. I end up there once or twice a year, and I never have to worry about how I am going to get around, or what I am going to do. For one nationals, I flew up to Chicago, and drove down with Dubb, Green, and Ryan. Fun times, good people.

I have gone to Hot August Nights - maybe the 2nd one. Been to a GLG. Been to a few Nationals.

Last year racing the GT-R in World Challenge, had the chance to meet up with a few friends. It is a nice feeling to have a friend or two that you can call when you need help in an unfamilar town.

One good story is... flying to Colorado, putting a Typhoon back together...at least partially. Leaving Colorado in a snow storm with no heater/defroster. Driving to Texas. Competeing in the Big Bend Open Road Race. Averaging 120 mph over 118 miles, winning our class, and hitting a peak of 150 mph. Driving back to Colorado. Thanks Dabney, that was a great experience.

Re: SyTy Friends and Stories

I'm not even an owner and these trucks have had (and will continue to have) a lasting effect on my life.

It's similar to what Daron said above. I've run the gauntlet of emotions from the people I've met because of them.

My best friend is someone I met here. He went to look at one I was contemplating purchasing. Didn't know me from any other person, but offered to drive the 30+ miles to go look at the truck with me, gave me a boost launch, and even bought dinner I think.

Another time another owner drove his tow vehicle, and trailer down from Cincy to pick me up to drive to Indy to pickup an RX7 project that I thought was a great idea. Despite him saying it was a bad idea, he helped out anyway, and didn't ask for a penny.

This has to be one of the tightest communities in the car world, I feel honored and privelaged to be a part of it. ESPECIALLY considering I don't even own one!!!

Re: SyTy Friends and Stories

I've been playing on the internet since i was 11 years old, and never have i ever been so invovled in a community of such great people. I've met some people I would consider some of my best friends through this hobby of ours and this site. Even though these trucks are a pain in the ass to work on and don't usually work the way we want them to they seem to attract a certain type of person.

someone who is willing to help, however, whenever, whatever.. willing to answer a question at odd hours, or simply point and laugh at you when you do something stupid. I don't get along with many of the local car guys, could be because of how they view me or just the way they act.

Here, whether you have a beat to sh*t sy/ty or a 9sec truck you are pretty much considered an equal, thats rare.

As for stories, I have a few, driving to chitown nats in 2002 from MA with nick and the northeast crew, picking up renz and his heads that smelt absolutely horrid.. driving endless hours with people i knew for less than an hour spending a weekend with strangers.. Morgan ordering a bling slam, Mlo and bdubb, peter H and his blown heads, the myclones pointing and laughing at us, PS2 on the side of the hotel... hanging out in JAS and heather's room... something i'll never forget..

even this year, driving to kansas city with my girlfriend and my typhoon in tow.. the northeast guys got together and made the trip, being at nats is more than just a parking lot full of trucks its a collection of old friends and some new ones. My girlfriend noticed this right away and while this was her first experience with a large syty gathering she saw the importance of it and wants to go back..

one of my favorites is driving 6+ hours into upstate new york with someone i just met, and finding out halfway through the trip that he was carrying a gun the entire time.. badge or no badge it'd be really easy to ditch a body in upstate ny :)

these bastards of GM draw quite an eclectic group of people, all of which are as unique and important as the trucks themselves..

Re: SyTy Friends and Stories

I have tooo many great memories to list. Here are just a few...

I remember the first Nats. I had never seen more than two SyTy's in one place at the same time. Dont forget about the SoCal crew rolls in with the KC police behind them.

Then there were the freakin hummingbird sized mosquitoes at Great Bend. I also got a ticket there from freakin Barney Fife.

As Jimmy said, I'll never forget how Christina found our Ty. Never underestimate a woman.

I will never forget the smell of Hood's chicken farm or how LOUD Jimmy Mann snores!

I will always owe Jeff Scott for trailering our Ty to NJ and back for the GMHTP Shootout and also Eric for letting all of us stay at his house.

Re: SyTy Friends and Stories

Hanging out at the Doubletree during Nats '05 Friday during the nasty thunderstorm; SyTy whiffleball, whiffle-golf ;) , mini-bike racing, "The Sermon", BSing/hanging out with people I just met but it felt like a family reunion. The "red-eyed" 5 hour drive from OK to KC with Servando copiloting, a guy Id never met before but gained so much syty knowledge from.

I think about the long-ass drive to nats and my butt gets phantom pains, but I'll have a smile on my face the whole way there.

And to think Mike Hardman was the one that woke up in the same bed as him after drinking copious amounts of beer the night before.

Those guys........
