Is this the correct wire to tap for a tachometer

Since my Syclone is a Saudi return it doesn't have a tach or a boost gauge.
I have a auto-meter 2 1/16 0-5000 Tach and boost gauge I'm looking to install.

Is the white wire on the black connector on the coil closest to the firewall the correct place to splice in?

Also,
What is the best thing to use to splice in to these wires?

My ass. Look at it.
Re: Is this the correct wire to tap for a tachometer

That is the correct wire (white), Id recommend very strongly that you solder that connection

Also, unless your planning on not driving this truck, or keeping it 100% original...Id swap out those old hard plastic vacuum lines :)

Up under the dash, near the ecm there is a connector that has like 6 wires. They go to the dash and feed the gauges.. The white wire on this connector is the tach signal.. You can just tap it there as its already inside and you don't need to find a way through the firewall.

EDIT: Here is a picture of that connector:

If you want to keep it original as possible, I would T-tap it. That way if you ever want to remove it, you wont have any issues with reconnecting the solder. Have it on mine and no issues.

Is it okay to tap in to the cluster wires?
I thought they used a different type of signal than what an after market guage uses.

I searched for information and found this on the FAQ at auto-meter I am not sure if it applies.
http://www.autometer.com/tech_faq_answer.aspx?sid=3&qid=13

"This leads us to the next point and question, "Why can't I just splice into the wire(s) that goes to the tach in the cluster?" This sounds like a viable option, but the signal to the cluster tach is not the same signal as what our tach needs to see (12v square wave). This is commonly referred to as Multiplexing, which is the process of communicating several messages over the same signal path or wiring. In most cases, the wire that has the tach signal also has the signal for any of the following:

Tachometer

LOW FUEL level indicator

Speedometer

The standard gauges; oil, water, fuel level and volts

Odometer

Brake warning light

Seat belt

And so on... "

So will tapping at the cluster harness work?

Re: Is this the correct wire to tap for a tachometer

Our signals to the gauges are not multiplexed.. Its one signal per wire.. You should be find tapping it there..

If you look at the pinout for the connector on the back of our cluster you will see that there is a wire for every function of the cluster.

Thank you sir, that is just the information I was looking for.

Does this look like the right connector?

If it is mine looks a little different it may be the flash of the camera changing the colors of the wires a little or because my syclone has a different cluster. :dunno:

The connector I have has 10 wires
2X White wires
1x Dark Green wire
1x Green wire
1x Orange wire
1x Orange-black stripe wire
1x gray wire
1x gray white stripe wire
1x White black stripe wire
1x pink wire

Why didnt you get the big 5" Tach?

Because I'm waiting for someone to make a 12" tach so I can rock that shit like Flava Flav.

If that wire doesn't give a clean enough signal, tap into the BD8 wire. That's the wire the ecm gets it's tach signal from.
Use the chart in the thread
http://www.syty.net/forums/showthread.php?t=47450

Try the wire they've shown you on here FIRST. And only use BD8 if your signal isn't good enough or your tach is dancing around and you need a better signal.

Looks like the right connector to me.. Its one of the white wires although I am not sure which one.. Since you cluster does not have a tach its prolly the white wire that does not mate to another wire on the other side of the connector..

Let us know how it works out for you..

Thanks,

Re: Is this the correct wire to tap for a tachometer

I decided to go thru the firewall to tap in to the coil since I was installing a boost gauge also.

I have another question now.

does the ground wire for the Tach need to be grounded at the battery terminal or can I ground it anywhere?

I didn't think ground wires needed to be done at a certain location as long as they are grounded.

Re: Is this the correct wire to tap for a tachometer

I had issues with my wide band grounded with other guages. I had to ground it by its self to work. Theory always used to be make the ground as short as you can to the chassis. Not sure if thats still the case.

Re: Is this the correct wire to tap for a tachometer

Thanks for all the tips,

How I ended up doing my gauges was like this,

I went thru the firewall from the inside by using a dremel and a pen attachment to drill a 1/8 hole in the gromet.

h.jpg

Then I tapped in to my coil using a T-Tap. Calterm #61357 from Oreillys
t.jpg

and hooked my boost pressure line up by using a Moroso adapter fitting Jegs #710-65310
and a 1/8 NPT compression fitting MSC #71779987, you could also use a cheaper #63031678

I ran the wires from the gauges between the A-pillar and the dash and got power for the Tachometer by tapping in to the empty IGN slot on the fuse box using a spade connector
then I paired and solderd the + and - light wires for both gauges and ran a single line to the empty LPS slot for power to the lights and a single line for a ground.
P.jpg

For the grounds I used 2 of the 3 bolts to the right of the gas pedal by soldering eyes to the ends of my wires. this may or may not be the best place to ground but I got a full 12v on my meter when testing them and they where ohhh so easy to get to.....
G.jpg

now to get some paint to match this pod to the stock pillar color

i've grounded there a few times, and never had any issues. mind you its only small stuff like my tach, ect.
