Anyone still sell 50# chips?

I just took my Sy out of a temporary storage. It has a biult motor with Vortecs, 412 cam, GT35r and 50# injectors. It has a Waller chip for the Ultimate. It idles a little high, but it runs better than others that I have tried. I bought this chip in 2004. I was wondering if there are any improved chips out there.

Any off the shelf chip will only get you so close . You might want to check out buying some equipment to tune with . You already have a decent tune and maybe a few tweaks on what you already have is all you need .

I have been out of the loop for a while. What do I need to do my own tuning? Is it that Romulator or something? Does it work well?

Hi Axxe,
I just got into this too, and was also a little confused before I jumped in. I bought the tuning package from Detroit Turbo. It consists of a few different parts:

1. TunerPro. This tuning package allows you to actually see the values that are being used by a chip to control the engine management system. It also allows you to change these values - the tuning. It will also datalog information coming into your ECM from the various sensors in the engine compartment. It performs various other functions as well.

2. The Burn1 unit (called Flash and Burn by some). This piece connects to your laptop via a USB cable. This piece will actually burn a new BIN onto a chip. The user interface on this is quite good and makes burning chip a simple process. This piece never goes into your truck, it is just used when connected to your laptop to store a new program into a microprocessor (chip).

3. Moates G1 adaptor. The G1 adaptor plugs into the ECM, in place of your factory MEMCAL. The factory MEMCAL plugs into the side of the G1, so you're actually using them both at once. The G1 bypasses the chip (microprocessor) portion of the MEMCAL, but leaves the rest of the MEMCAL operational. The G1 stays in your ECM and you can insert either a microprocessor, or an 'Ostrich' into its ZIF (zero insertion force) socket (you can see both in the link below).

4. Ostrich. Ostrich is a real-time emulator....meaning it is capable of storing a BIN (the program your ECM uses to control your motor). In addition to this simple storage, the Ostrich allows you to modify values in the BIN while the engine is running - this gives you "on-the-fly" tuning capabilities. Once you have dialed in your perfect tune using TunerPro via Ostrich, you can then replace Ostrich with a burned chip - thus signaling the end of your tuning process - at least until you upgrade to the next new part on your engine :)

Here's a link to my photobucket page which shows some of this... I'll be adding to this as I go along. I haven't actually done my first tune yet, but there is a lot of support on this forum and using the search bar will give you enough material to read for the next two years!

Have fun!

Thanks Wyo. I am going to look into that. Ho wmuch did the TunerPro cost? It doesn't look like it comes with the kit. I used to want DFI real bad, but times and $ have changed. Let me know how your tuning works out. - Mark

Tunerpro is a $30 donation. You can always give more it you want :D You can get it at http://www.tunerpro.net/downloadApp.htm Make sure you get the RT version

Make sure you read these posts by JSM. They will really help you get started.

Boost Tuning 101

With tunerpro and that equipment listed, you can see in real time where you are at in Each table. You will need to download the ECM definition file and the ALDL definition file I have up on the front page of www.nwstp.com for this to work.

Re: Anyone still sell 50# chips?

Hi Mark,
No prob. I spaced that out on the TunerPro. I got the TunerProRT off the website (http://tunerpro.markmansur.com/)... it's just a $30 donation. I work with about three computers and sometimes I don't have access to some receipts because they're at work, or at home. I also just registered my DataMaster software tonight and that hurt a little more ($119), but DM's datalogging seems superior in its presentation. If you can afford it, get both. If you're going to tune you need TunerProRT, if you're just going to datalog (see what your engine management system is doing) then DM is the one to get.

TunePro RT appears to be a very powerful, very nice program - although it can be a little intimidating at first glance. Remember too that any of these programs can allow any of us to pretty easily grenade our engines if we're not methodical and careful in how we manipulate them.

Our community is going through a little bit of a major shift right now with regard to tuning - you will see reference to 'code $58' and 'code $59'. Code $59 is the new code, in Beta right now. I feel that it is the one to really set your sights on. Since its release is imminent the guys putting it together are pretty consumed with getting the details tidied up (at least from what I can tell). But, I think it will be an invaluable tool for those of us committed to keeping these vehicles on the road, and committed to improving them - a BIG thanks to the Code$59 gurus - I still don't even know who they all are.

Sorry to get longwinded... I'll let you know how the tuning works out - my wideband goes in tomorrow night, then it's time to start the tuning process. Wish me luck!
