Chirp noise

I been dieing to drive my truck for weeks and i becasue i couldnt make it to Homecoming i decided to go to a local lexus meet that my friends do alot of sponsorship for. I spent a few hours yesterday detailing it and i was happy to finally take it out. Today i get ready to go and its pouring outside. My friends told me they do not have rain where the meet is so its still on. Of course i didnt want to stay home so i went. First time i ever drove the truck in the rain wasnt to thrilled especially after hours of detailing the night before.

Anyway this is my issue. I was driving home after the meet and i hear a chirping sound. This sound is only when you are moving so its nothing in the motor. Sounds more like a front wheel bearing but i replaced both sides 4 months ago. I jacked up the truck in the front and i spin the wheels and i dont hear anything. I think is because there is no weight on them. My question is did anyone have this sound and what did they change, second can it be something else instead of what i think it is and third can i grease them up somehow instead of replacing them again. Im thinking the water got somewhere and its making this noise.

Last question i promise.....When i had the truck jacked up and i ws looking over everything i did notice that the front diff is really hot. I understand its near the motor so it does attrack more heat and two it has the inner parts causing some kind of heat. I did check the fluid and its full. I did amsoil about 9 months ago so i dont think its that but should it get that hot.

thanks

Re: Chirp noise

If you still have a stock front propshaft the double cardan joint is dry. You'll need to grease it.

Re: Chirp noise

It's at the back of the shaft. You need a grease gun with a pointy tip to fit into the grease fitting. There is a ball & socket joint in the middle of the shaft (I think it stabilizes the rear joint) that gets dry.
It's probably easier to remove the shaft & then grease it up. You can do all of the fittings at the same time, including the front CV joint.
Here is a pic of what you're looking for.
Sorry for the hairy shaft pic. :rotf:

Ok let me get this straight there is not grease fiiting but you need a pin to gease it. I do have a pin that attaches to my grease gun to grease joints on newer cars that dont come with grease fittings. Can i use that.

Re: Chirp noise

Not the traditional zerk nipple fitting.
See the fitting to the left of the rear u-joint clip?
That is where the grease gun nipple needs to go.
There are also one of those on the side of each u-joint.
There is also a hole, which is only accessible with the shaft removed, on the end of the CV. Squirt lots of grease in there and move the CV race in & out to spread the grease around.

Re: Chirp noise

If your sound is anything like a jingling sound, check your crown caps on the CV shafts. Sometimes the cotter pins don't put enough pressure on them and as your wheels turn they "fall" so to speak causing a chirping or jingling sound. It is annoying as all hell too.

Its more of a chirp. Like something needs to be greased. I greased the entire front end and look everything over and really didnt see anything odd. Its not the brakes becasue when i hit my brakes the noise is still there. It doesnt go away or change the tone in the sound.

Even though i havent tried what people have stated just yet but please if anyone has any other ideas let me know. thanks

Re: Chirp noise

It's actually what 4c fed said.. the front propshaft. On my first original propshaft I heard the same noise for about a week of daily driving before the thing let go and took out a number of things under the truck. I understand that you don't beat on the truck or drive it rough but I would still like to through the "upgrade it before it makes a mess of other parts) suggestion out there to you because I ended up going throw three of them after the original failed. The last two of course was due to me actually using the truck's power :) though

Well Flyin Ryan thanks but do you think doing the grease first would help?? If not you say to replace it still need to do some searches but where do i get one? Are there vendors that have upgraded ones? If i can grease it and get the noise to go away so i at least know that was the point of my problem i wouldnt mind being on the safe side and replacing it. But if i replace it and its still there that im not looking to do.

What are your suggestions???

Only replacement I'd concider would be the proven gilbert shaft.. I believe prime gears also makes there own version of the gilbert as well.

Normally from what i've seen is that the chirping is caused by lack of grease but the reason being the rubber boot has torn. They do sell kits to rebuild that double cardon joint and boot and with you driving it like an old lady it may last another 10 years but if your going to purchase new you have to go with a gilbert or equal. The stock propshaft if still available from the dealers was something craze like $800 if I remember right :)

Re: Chirp noise

Vinnie, I replaced the front prop shaft while I owned it. The boot on the original shaft developed a tear. From what I remembered it only had 30K on it and looked in excellent shape I purchased it.

Re: Chirp noise

When I had the truck up, trying to figure out the loose front end, I noticed my cv boots creaked pretty loud when I turned a wheel, though they're all still intact.
