NOOOB to datamaster!!! Rich idle cause???

Just got datamaster to connect with a friends computer and got some weird numbers. (they at least look weird to me compared to the numbers I see on powertuneplus.com).

This test is just at idle and I'm not sure what to make of any of it. But before I get to the datamaster numbers heres a little back story of whats going on. The tuck is running EXTREMELY rich at idle, stalls after a minute or so, idle jumps from a almost stall to 2000 rpm. Basically runs like crap and spits out soot and gas out of tailpipe.

This is all after replacing a blown intake gasket because of a missfire. Putting my truck back together took a while because I was upgrading as I went. My list of upgrades includes new 50lb injectors, high flow fuel pump( after removing the kb boost a pump that came with the truck) Removed and rerouted intercooler lines,MSD distributer, taylor wires and new plugs, Waller turbo upgrade, 3 bar map, ultimate chip recalabrated for 50 pounders by waller, and new vacuum lines, and after I figure out my problem I have more to do.

I am new to datamaster, car engines, and computers somewhat, so please give me a chance. After I got the cable to find the pcm I clicked on the monitor button and thats when everything started showing numbers. These are all the columns that had numbers in them.
-Eng 63.5 *C
-Map KPa 71.3 -Knock Count 51090
-Vacuum KPa 0.4 -IA Temp 44 *C
-LTerm 128 -TPS 2.4
-STerm 128 -TPS Volts .75
-02 MV / XCNTS 0/ 2 -Idle RPM 1000
-BPW/ Inj DC 8.82/0 -IAC Pos 16.7
-AFR tgt /VE 0/73.7
-Spark advance 32.3

I really doubt these numbers make any sence, I dont know at what point they are recorded b/c I turned off the truck and then stopped monitoring. Thats why I dont know why the TPS is at 2.4? And my knock count is off the charts and there was no spark retard? Could that be from fouled plugs? I dont think this datamaster is going to help me find my problem.

Ive been in touch with random members on here asking them what they thought and they all gave good advice but it still is bad. I checked my ecm fuses, and made sure the chip is seated correctly.
I need to make sure the chip is good and calabrated correctly( how can I test this?) And I need to make sure I put everything back correctly. The timing is set correctly, and the a/f is around 40 and even when I turn it way down it still smokes like a pig. After doing research on here about rich stumbling trucks I thing it could be in 'limp mode'. What is limp mode and how do I get it out if it?

I know there are alot of questions here in my rambling rant of confusion but if anybody can decipher what is going on I will always be gratetful. thanks-Matt

i know those ultimate 50 chips were pig rich at idle, they would take the plugs right out of the truck,Might need to do some tweaking on the chip.Mine used to run and i know many others also with the fuel pressure turned all the way down, was still pig rich

Hey Matt,

Well, you made a lot of changes to your truck so you're going to have some sorting out to do. Waller burned you a chip, but that chip can actually be just a starting point... one thing that will affect how rich it is at idle is fuel pressure. Get a fuel pressure gauge and see where your fuel pressure is set. Get this around 45lbs static (engine off, key on) and you should be somewhat close for what John targeted for the chip.

Datamaster is actually the only way you are probably going to be able to get it running good again.

Did you set the timing to "0" with the tan wire disconnected, after you installed the distributor? You have to do this first, if not done already.

You'll have to talk to John to see why you're not getting any O2/AFR readings - it could be something as simple as adding Dig's patch, depending on what Code John is using.

Don't worry about the knock count... Josh (Tooky) in his website explains how, from one version of Datamaster, the knock counts became rather meaningless (at least the startup count). The amount of KR is what's really important but you won't see that till you start driving it with a tad of boost added.

You need to let the truck get warmed up (over 160 degrees F) before you start looking at the numbers.... things are in a state of flux till you get past that temperature.

Just the fact that it starts and runs is actually a great starting point with your limited experience! Get with John and have him give you some pointers, since its his turbo and chip your'e working with....

The fact that it starts and idles somewhat normally means the chip is seated correctly, that it is NOT in limp mode. Have you tried driving it?

keep up the good work

no o2 it might be set to open loop ,they seem to run mutch better in open loop.

Hmmm, I'm running open loop, and I do get O2 readings.... that could be a result of Code59 though. If John's running '58 then Matt probably needs the patch that Dig (TurboDig) has available.

Re: NOOOB to datamaster!!! Rich idle cause???

Thanks for the replys! But its 6:40 in the morning now and I have to go to work but I want to answer a couple of questions first. The timing is set to zero and I did disconnect the wire when setting it, I have a fp gauge that reads around 50 psi static, but I will turn it down more. I think I saw datamaster say 'open loop' on the top. I havent driven it yet, it really will barley idle and when i give it any gas there is so much black smoke that i cant see my neighbors house, lol!

Take the FP down to around 40 and see if it helps at all. Some people say the 50lb'ers can be a pain to work with.

You do need to get the TPS down to 0%... is the little security cap missing off of the throttle adjustment set stop? If so, you could try closing the throttle stop till it reads 0%. The IAC should open up and keep the idle constant as the throttle blades close.

Re: NOOOB to datamaster!!! Rich idle cause???

If you weren't gettign DM to connect I'd say it sounded like a bad chip... but you are.

Some of the 50# ultimates were ugly rich, would barely run depending on which flavor of 50s you had.

I'd start with about 38 psi base FP (no vac), and see where that takes you.

Seems to have lots of knock counts for just starting up... I'd suspect something's funny there.

Also your TPS wackyness makes me think there's a ground issue someplace. Check the grounds, there's a thread in the vault that outlines the locations.

thanks dig I was thinking maybe I missed a ground. When I take my base fp with no vac to I plug the disconnected vac line of keep it open?

Can you post up your DM for the GURUS to look at?....That's not me but I'm interested to see what is shows.

Good info above guys. That's why I check in here daily. There's always useful info and helpful fellow owners.

SyTy.net ROCKS!!

Re: NOOOB to datamaster!!! Rich idle cause???

Yeah I will post another datamaster run this weekend. I will let the truck warm up first for 10 minutes and turn down the fp to 40-42 and we'll see what it looks like. Ditto on the comment about this fourm everybody is very helpful. I also check everyday, i dont post everyday b/c I am mostly hear to learn and look for parts, lol.
