Removing The Dashboard

Just Getting Started...
Ok guys, I need to remove my dashboard to get to the AC stuff. Never had to do that on the TY, so I was wondering if anyone has done it and if so, can you provide a quick how-to on this so I know where to find the screws, pins etc... so I don't do any damage to it when i pull it off...

Thanks

Re: Removing The Dashboard

All the best....I removed 2 nice dashes from 2 Sonoma GT's and both of them cracked. You really need two people and don't force the removal. I suspect 1 of my dashes was brittle from the sun but the other was fine until I tried to be Mr. Independent.

Re: Removing The Dashboard

Heater Core bit the bullet and spilled out the coolant into the cabin. Ruined the carpeting, luckily I can just cover up the mess with the floor mat. Replacing it this weekend...

do a search on heater core removal. dash doesn't need to come out.

Yep, here's the link for when I did mine. You DON'T have to take the dash out to do the heater core

Re: Removing The Dashboard

Make sure to blow threw the new heater core. When I bought my Ty it had a new heater core, but the heat stopped working. Quality control missed the fact mine was soldered shut.

Does anyone have any experience with a "dash cap"....a plastic molded cap that is installed over the cracked dash that looks very good?

I installed one on a Syclone. It looked very good. Muck better than the cloth coverings for sure.

It was at some random company that I found online when I did a search for a dash cap. It was several years ago and I do not remember the company now.

I don't think anyone makes one that is a true direct fit for the Sy/Ty dashes because our instrument cluster and surround is a little different than regular S series trucks. The one they do carry may need to be trimmed just a little for a nice fit in that area but the rest of it fits fine. I had to trim mine just a little and I was satisfied with the fit after that. The only thing I don't like about them is the way the speaker grill and the side defrost vents sit down into the cover. IIRC, I did spray mine to get the color a little closer. I don't remember the brand, but I think the one I have came from LMC truck. If it wasn't there, it was fleabay. Sports Machine does carry the Coverlay brand but it is about twice what I paid for mine.

I had to trim the one I bought also. The pictures that I posted show the area trimmed. It was easy and I thought that it turned out great.

I would buy the one without the vents and cut them out myself if I ever replaced one again. The color on the one that I used was very good. But I am sure there are a few different shades depending on the manufacturer.

They are also made to just be glued on. The holes are not cut in for the four bolts in the top of the dash. I cut them in myself so if I ever needed to remove the dash pad I would not have to locate and try to make holes with it installed.
