1994 and newer S-10

Hey, just curious,

Would it be not too hard to swap out the motor and its components and computer, tranny and rear end from a Typhoon to a 94 or newer S-10? One of those cheap chevy S-10 with short bed and standard cab. No AWD so not going to use transfer case and front suspension. Just RWD.

SOWWY! I don't read the forum everyday, I even did search on it, but I think someone else just wanted to drop in an engine thats all. I wanted to do the engine, tranny, rear end, because the newer S-10 drivetran isn't worth crap. I think I would like the GMC Sonoma looks better.

where's your help?

Tell u what, I have 92 GMC Typhoon that is going to be salvaged and I am buying it back. Its got so much work done to it and I hate to see it go. So instead of all those performance parts sitting in the smashed up Typhoon, I'd like to swap it into the newer 94-97 GMC Sonoma. I don't give sh it about the ABS, airbags, and whatever.

Just thought I could swap out the motor and all its components, wiring with computer, tranny, and rear end. No transfer case and front axle, just leave it RWD. I assume it will take lots of time to do the swap, but it shouldn't cost too much.

Having a donor Ty will make it so much more easy. Freshen up the motor while it's out.

Jesus H. Christ. Why couldn't you have just said this in the first place. YES! This will be very easy. Just get truck that already had a 4.3. My recmmendation would be an Extreme w/ V6 and auto tranny. The extreme has the 8.5" rear end which will take the power of the SyTy motor. Additionally it has a nice sport suspension that handles quite nicely in the twisties. Problems that you will have are only limited to registration. See my parody post it has links to this week's turbo charge my blazer threads. BG had a nice simple write up on his thoughts.

trust me here ryan, Keenan's typhoon was mint, and had an awesome build up on it, ask Mike Lee or Jerry McCoy. or ask Roland how clean it was, it's too bad that it's not around.

Keenan, i'd email McCoy or get in touch with him ( not sure which he replys to faster ) and ask him about what's all needed, because he has done the swap in his son's S-10.

here is a post from BG on this

Motor will bolt in

newer engines have accessories mounted differently, so if you reused the newer style accessories, you may have to do some tweaking to syty crossover pipes (in front, below crank pulley) to make it clear accessories.

The computer, overflow bottle & battery are kinda jammed in on the passenger side. Relocate/remove those to help with turbo inlet issues.

I'm sure there are some fabrication/creativity issues to be done, but otherwise it wouldn't be *that* bad a deal. www.tobefast.com has a 2wd Syty powered truck that has gone fast. It was at the Syty nats, making some fast passes. They went full out race though, removed AC, syty style accessories, FAST, Powerglide. Intercooler *may* present some issues, nothing that can't be dealt with though.

Building off the newer engine/computer is NOT a good idea if you are looking to make some big hp though. Block *probably* is weaker, heads & cam are great, but the intake/injectors will present issues.

You could make a very fast truck this route, but on radials it might not get the best traction.

HTH, Keenan.

Just thought I would through my $0.02 in here....The xtreme did not necessarily come witht he 8.5" rear end..Only the V6 5spd with the GU4 adn G80 codes have the 8.5" the rest are the 7.625" rear....Big thread going on ssf.com right now about it.

Also for the money you are going to spend on hte swap in youcould prolly get a Mach Perf turbo setup for about the same $$$ His current setup on his wifes Xtreme blazer is somewhere around the 305 hp neighborhood...this is using the newer motor and ECM, but your limited on hte "tunability" of it....you can't just burn chips anymore.

OK theres my $0.02 enjoy

Not really. I'm waiting for more donor trucks than just his to see the durability of running more than 10psi w/ TE44 turbo on a stock block. But in this case he has a line on a built motor and all accessories out of a wrecked donor truck.

instead of killing a classic (sy/ty)

how about you just rebuild the totaled sy/ty

put a v8 in the s10, leave the ty alone.

for godsake.

there is somthing like 19 thousand dollars worth of damage to the ty. i wouldn't even bother. that truck is done.

well, like bdubb said, it was practically mint condition. So nice interior and exterior. Unfortunately it got damaged all around. Lets say, banged up left front fender, whole right side smashed up, roof has dents, not from contact, but probably twisted, so probably twisted frame. all cladding except for rear is ripped off or broken. Cracked front windshield, broken rear window. As for mechanical stuff, the really NICE intercooler piping that Mike Lee made was banged up next to the KB intercooler. Exhaust pipe was banged up, kinda like twisted into a pretzel, its 3" pipe.

That really made me feel so bad and sad about to see this get ruined. But it looks like all the rest of the performance stuff and interior is still good. To look at this in my opinion, it would be expensive to find a donor Syclone to swap it all in. I could get a 1994-1997 GMC Sonoma and do swap onto it and make it look nice with just RWD. Just standard cab and short bed, its only little over 2800lbs. Thats like shaving off 1,000lbs from Typhoon.

For those who do not know what set up I have in the Typhoon, I have McCoy performer plus motor and custom 60 trim turbo with dual ball bearings and 50# injectors with custom 50# chip and electric boost controller, brian hartmann's Stage IV tranny kit, Kenne bell headers and downpipe. Alot of other shit, u get the point, I didn't want all that to go waste, I did NOTHING to the interior and exterior of the Typhoon, it was great shape and condition.

Anyways, I would like to know if I could get away with the 4 cyclinder GMC Sonoma and get motor mounts for the 4.3L motor?? I'll be sure to ask McCoy and others for valuable information. I will start doing this project after I am done with my 1986 Mustang SVO, ha ha its 4 cyclinder with turbo, but a fun car.

I would not use a 4cyl s10.. weaker frame, and different setup..

if you go with a 4x4 frame it will be MUCH stronger, and depending on what you want for suspension etc.. it would be the same wheel offset as a sy/ty.. of course the torsion bar is a PIA..

eitherway, a v6 s10/blazer would be much better to start off with, same frame mounts, no worries about lining it up right..

although depending on how much hp/ft. lb your making you might want to strengthen the frame anyway...

are u thinking of me going with AWD on a S-10? I am only wanting to go with just RWD. So just the motor, tranny, and rear end axle.

I am curious how is the chassis of the 4 cylinder models are weaker than the V6. I would have assumed that chevy would have used same chassis.

2wd and 4wd are different frames..

supposedly 4wd is strong.. will hold a v8 swap much better.. which makes me think it would handle this swap better.

heh heh, thats what slicks are for.

Anyways, thanks man, I appreciate the info and help. I'll be looking more about the 94-97 GMC Sonomas. I see it maybe about 700lbs or more lighter than the Typhoon.
