Well i guess its up to you, I would replace the Head/Pan/Timing chain/front/rear mains Gaskets. Its better to do it out of the truck then in the truck. But its all on you.

Yeah is wouldnt hurt to replace the head gasket and maybe get one made a little heavier for boost applications

You will need to drill the heads and convert the lower intake, so yes you will want to change the head gasket while your in their. As for the rest of the conversion, I would use the 4x4 aluminum oil pan add a return line, you will also need to use the later style starter as well. Everything else can be used from your Ty.

What compression ratio is the 2001 vortec engine?

Re: 2001 vortec engine swap

well the intake is off getting modified so i got that covered, but i'd forgotten about having to redrill the heads, duh. yeah a gasket set wouldn't be a bad idea. i got a mini starter on the ty right now, does the newer 4.3 use the inline starter bolt pattern.

Yo uneed to use the later style starter, because where flywheel mounts to the crank is slightly different.

ahh i sees. well i called back and it's an 06 w/ 61k miles missing the distributer, only thing is it's out of a 2wd, so i need to scrounge the 4x4 oil pan right? but he quoted me 425 for it.

In addition to the oil pan, you will need the oil pump pickup. $425 is cheap around here.

you REALLY need the technical service bulletin timing chain tensioner and front cover kit.

otherwise it will rattle at idle.
