20G Turbo

Re: 20G Turbo

I'd talk to bullseye and get something made or garrett, it turns out I have a friend that works there that could have gotten me a turbo at cost that I wish I would have know of. I got the short straw and bought a turbo off of here for 350 bucks, but it had a cracked exhaust side, so I had to buy a new one, and then the grove that holds the exhaust side seal was messed up from when someone had blown the turbo up before so I had to sacrifice the 17c cartrige to make that work. Just been a pain, the 350 plus 50 plus 75 plus 75 is what I have into now (exhaust snail, 2 rebuild kits, soon to be 3 along with a new exhaust turbine (my own fault)) for another couple hundred bucks I could have gotten a nice used garrett and made a downpipe and then jsut been done with it. This old mitsu stuff is getting kinda rickity.

But even something like a gt35r with a smaller exhaust side would have worked. The only thing I will give the 20G is that it bolts right on and just goes. You can go pretty fast with it but its takes alot of support. I will say I noticed a huge differance when I broke my 20G and had to put the 17c back on, so it deff. flows more air.

As for the springs, I am not as ambitious as SIX. Porting wastegates and messing with springs is too complicated for my limited knowledge and will likely lead me to more problems (being uneducated on turbos). It is nice to see what can be done, though. And throwing in some helpful pictures was a bonus. Hopefully my set up will work good too, Storm Warning.

Re: 20G Turbo

My 20G/14cm does not have any helper springs and the boost hits fast and hard with the 2800 stall. I have the stock WG actuator.

You think it spools fast w/a stock WG actuator,,,, you should try out a stiffer one.:2cents:
I went form stock to a 15 psi base boost pressure, w/the added helper spring, now it's base boost pressure is 19 +psi for even faster spool-up.

Also, what are you using to control the wastegate? If its the stock system, that can be improved also by adding a different electronic boost controller for even faster spool-up.:2cents:

Re: 20G Turbo

A 2800 stall TC is just a stupid expensive excuse to spool your 20g, of course it's going to spool faster, any turbo would when you increase the rpm it starts to make boost. Point is that you dont need it and it can actually make you slower in ET. Use a better wastegate like the forge unit in the GP thread and quit wasting your time with all that helper spring bandaid BS.

There must be a lot of experienced folks on here making stupid decisions then because it seems many go with a 2800-3000 stall to make it perform better with a 20g. People, such as myself, with little knowledge about torque converters tend to go with what the experienced have tried with good results. The main reason I need to go with a new TC is because mine seems to not be functioning as it should (based on research within this forum). This makes it a good time to upgrade.

I have a pte6131 ball bearing ( the current version is a 6157bb), the turbo buick owners seem to love that turbo when using a stock heads/cam. I would think that turbo would be good combo for a SyTy with a stock long block or mild build (L35)

Ask to see some time slips from those with a 2800TC and a 20g, specifically a Typhoon sence that is what you have.

Why do you assume your TC is not functioning properly? Have you verified this? How?

By the way, 0966SY, those wastegates you speak of are very nice. I have been keeping up with the thread.....

Re: 20G Turbo

Ok, so what's wrong with them? :D

Curious to hear your assessment of them.

Oh there is absolutly nothing wrong with them, its just a common turbo that you can find in alot of places. For some reason I get the vibe that people think if its a common turbo that you can find anywhere that it won't work for a syty, like they think it has to be unique to work or something. Great turbo, wish I had one.

You are correct, and I am one of them, but my reasons are different. I tried to run the stock converter on a 20G with a 14cm exhaust housing and it ran fine, it spooled fine, it even launched great. I don't know if it was that cam or the tune or the timing or the meth that helped it but it launched so hard I was bouncing off the bump stops of the rear suspension (I was told by people that the front wheels were coming off the ground which I know they couldn't have, but it launched that well) I would have stuck with the stock converter too, except about 3 weeks into my first build I started hearing a clicking noise coming from my block. I tore into it and found that my thrust bearing had been cut out of my motor by something pushing on the back of the crank. That something was a ballooned stock torque converter. It turns out they can only take so much before they flex from the pressure and destroy the motor. I had to get the crank re-tuned (was a brand new scat crank) and new bearing but the motor otherwise was ok. I ended up breaking down and buying a precision vigulante 2800 stall converter with an anti balloon plate and the whole bit just so I wouldn't have to do that again. apparintly what happened to me is a rare / impossible series of events, because I've been told that with my build I shouldn't be any faster than 13's...

By the way those vig converters don't stall at all where they say they will. I was on teh phone with the guy for 30 minutes telling him that I needed it to stall at 2800 and it was gonna be making 650 ft/lbs at 2800 rpm and he assured me it would be as tight as it could be and there wouldn't be a problem. I have logs showing that truck leaving the line at 4200...and I love it

Re: 20G Turbo

Two or three locals that frequent here have road in my Ty running 15psi on the 14cm 20g. They can vouch for how well the gate performs when installed correctly.

Ive got a good idea, the 20g is a great low cost turbo upgrade for the money. Why dont you run the Ty at the track and get a baseline for how the truck runs now. Then you upgrade just the Turbo to the 14cm 20g with the forge gate. Hell use the stock gate first. And see how well you do, faster right. Then you gamble on the 2800TC and get back to us with your results.

Mod one thing at a time, otherwise how do you know what direction your headed.

Or you could just listen to everyone else and do the 20g and TC togather, It's not like the damn truck isnt going to run using the stock TC.

Re: 20G Turbo

I have a 20G-12cm and went with a 2800 stall converter from PI when I did my 80E conversion. Compared to my stock converter & trans, it is night and day differance on the same tune. Launches harder, couples better, keeps the motor in a good rpm range, ect. Glad I did it and love the results, too bad I didn't waste my money sooner with one on my stock trans..........

Re: 20G Turbo

Does anyone know if RPM offers any other turbos other than whats on their site? They haven't updated it in a couple years, and I think several are not even offered anymore.

Yes they do offer others. I bought a newer PTE type from them not listed on there site I don't know what other brands they have to choose from. You would have to give them a call.

Use a better wastegate like the forge unit in the GP thread and quit wasting your time with all that helper spring bandaid BS.

FYI
a helper spring as you call a bandaid BS is not BS. It allows you to fine tune your base boost levels.
You cannot adjust your Forged unit as you can with a helper spring.

You would have to take apart the unit change springs make shims which is a lot more involved than to turn the turnbuckle a turn or two.

It's a simple devise & easy to adjust.
If I wanted to add 1 half of PSI I can do it. You could do that with the Forge unit take it apart change springs make shims or mod the top of the Forge unit & make an adjustable bolt & jam nut.:2cents:

How do you install the gate incorrectly

How fast is your TY.
Is your eng stock
What is your 60 ft times. What stall is your torque converter

I have a 12 CM turbine housing & my TC is too tight & it would run better with a higher stall converter .I would say I am leaving .2-.5 on the table on ET wise by me still using the stock converter..... easy .2.-.5
A 14 CM housing (stock 20G) definately needs a higher stall converter than stock to run better.
You think Jeremy would have run 11.8 or 11.9 w.a stock turbo & a stock converter.
Sorry no question marks my used laptop question mark key does not work.

Just to make sure we are both talking about the same spring, I am referring to a spring someone adds to the external part of the wastegate, from the rod/flapper to the housing on the gate to assist the actaul spring in the gate to be stiffer.

The forge gate is a two piece billet dual port gate, you can take it apart and change springs from green, yellow, blue to red. Each have there range of higher "base" boost when dialed in on the preload from the rod. Incorrectly adjusting a wastgate, you set preload on the spring to get desired stable boost control. Tighting the spring from a rod adjustment till you get 18psi is not correctly adjusting a wastgate

Yes that is the same spring.
The Forge unit looks nice . but you cannot adjust in 1 half psi increments. haveing springs that covers 5 10 15 20 psi does not cover inbetween ranges.

I never said to adjust the wastegate rod . even though that is another option up to a point. but if you go too far. the you could limit the opening of the wastegate valve. not good.

I would have to dissagree with .5, is the term tight is reffering to how quickly the convertor reach's it's "flash" stall speed.

I have a slip here I found that is not my best, I'll look for it tomarow. This slip has these Mods

92 Ty
mitsu 20g 14cm stock TC, spools at 2100-2200
forge wastegate
14-15psi
ATR pit bull
Stock L35 heads
93 pump gas

1.85 60'
5.41 330'
8.46 1/8th
80.67 MPH

All we have is a 1/8th close by, I remember this run. It was a hot lap from my best, a 8.30 and my 60ft was a 1.78. I have the slip put away here somewhere.

This weekend i'll have some 1/4 times with 15psi same setup with an ultimate instead

I dont believe at all if I added a 2800TC that I could shave .5 off my ET.

Jeremy who? and what mods yeilded his 11.8-11.9?
