240sx +lsx+ syty?

I was going to do a little show and tell earlier but I figured I'd at least get a little was into the project first. :secret2: The simple run downgoes like this, 5.3l for now ( forged aluminum 370 over the winter:devil:) T76 for now (80-88mm over the winter:devil:) 4l80 stick shift to syclone tranfercase to s10 front differential, and infinity q45 rear. also I plan to keep it under 3000lbs Its a bit more complicated than that but thats the basic plan.

Some body is probably asking them selves why would a person do this? I want my car to be all purpose. A car set up launch hard typically sucks when when you ask it to turn hard. and the inverse is true. Ask a hi powered 2wd car to accelerate hard from a roll and what do you get? smoke and rubber, fun but not so effective.

Most of the hard parts have been purchased and are in my garage the big variable left is the the torque converter. Also drive shafts still need be made. I'm thinking a 5 clutch vigalate around 3500 stall. For road racing run it locked in 2nd-4th with a button to unlock for down shifts (sort of a poor mans sequential) for drag racing run it unlocked I'm thinking I can get the best of both worlds. 4 gears should be plenty for a turbo motor and my gear will give the car a theoretical to speed of 206mph. with a goal of around 650 at the tire it should be a gear limited speed.

thats all for now here are some pics of the car, the old sr20det setup and the progress so far. I still have a long way to go.

From reading it sound like a manual 4l80 that has to be manually shifted instead of with the computer.

Good luck to you!

I have owned 2 s14s so far and will eventually do a single turbo lsx...eventually.

Holy crap, a turbo AWD 240SX using a Chevy drivetrain?

I think I'm in love.

I saw this posted over on LS1tech.

Looks like a pretty cool project. Good luck with it

Re: 240sx +lsx+ syty?

Parish and a shop out in California have basically proved that the 5.3l is the strongest as far as stock rotating assemblies are concerned. 740hp at the tire through a 4l80e <- who says this trans sucks power? I don't have money to build an engine and get the awd together so 5.3l ftw.

My fist car was a 73 chevy truck with a 454. (4wd roostertails in the dirt) Then I drove my buddies turbo 4cyl and I was hooked. why it took me this long to put them together is beyond me?

On a side note every response here has been positive same with ls1tech, on the Nissan forum 1 reply and it was negative.

Yea, I'd say syty.net is one of the most friendly car forums I've seen. LS1tech isn't bad. But I do notice alot of import haters over there.

Nice car though. I'd love to own a 240 one day. What kind of mods were done to the SR20? How much power were you making if ya remember?

yeah lots of boys that love merican made cars over there but Ive gotten nothing negative so far. I think how well that civette turned out made alot of people eat there words.

I'm a little surprised that GB hasn't commented yet. When I called him with questions on the conversion shaft for the 4l80 he kind of convinced be to post pics up.

Re: 240sx +lsx+ syty?

sr20 was about 380ish to the tire. cams, intake manifold, tubular ex manifold 3inch out the back, gt3071r turbo hks wategate btcc style stacked intercooler radiator setup, suporting stuff etc, it was no slouch but kept eating bearing and void of torque. plus my buddie has a credit card c5 built by doug rippie I really need to shut his face.

It's either incredible smart or incredibly dumb.....I can't decide....mostly out of a lack of knowledge, or comparative evidence.

Knowing how a Sy/Ty handles with all that weight in the wrong areas of the car I'm hesitant to think it's a good idea. Knowing how a modern suspended 240 handles with struts at all 4 corners has me very optimistic.

I'll definitely be keeping an eye on this one, as it is undoubtedly one of the more interesting swaps I've seen lately. Please come check back and update us often eh?

That's not bad! I mainly asked cause I'd love to throw one in a datsun 510. Probably not quite that modded. just a fun little car that handles well and has decent power.

I hear ya on the vette owner. Theres just something so much more satisfying about building your own shit than buying it. Show him some tail lights!

Re: 240sx +lsx+ syty?

id do an s14 turbo and tubular manifold, on a s13 engine it will put out 275 ish at the wheels at 15 psi that will be plenty and drive like stock. I got 20+ mpg when i had that set up. I still have a nice clutch and 9lbs flywheel, and a few other parts if interested.

struts in the front, multi link rear. my weight balance will be better than an syty plus at least 1000lbs lighter.95% of the maybe 200lbs added will be between the axles and low to the ground.

my biggest problem is powering out of corners. the car gets sideways in a hurry.

updates will be here too.

I'd take ya up on that if I wasn't heavily involved with my truck build right now..damn expensive projects...

cars cost way too much, I'm trying to keep the awd conversion from spiraling out of control.

Re: 240sx +lsx+ syty?

Hey! I've been working my tail off building stuff for people and getting stuff ready for the Homecoming.

It's hard to believe it all fits as low as the car sits. And the syty guys complain about a crossmember:D I still think you ought to use some kind of trans controller on it. Manual 80e shift kit costs over $300 and take better part of a day to put in. You can't go back without buying another valvebody so really think that over. I know it sounds really fun to shift it yourself but at the track, it's nice to just let the controller do it.

I love seeing projects like this.

I'm working with a couple people now to get the 80e stuffed with a proper sized converter into a Supra.

No one here will give you a hard time. I'm betting you'll have yours out and running while most of ours will still be sitting on jackstands:tup:

Don't worry what the other idiots are saying that don't like it. If everyone listened to what everyone else said, no on would be using an 80e because they are heavy bastards and rob power. Front coil overs on AWD? CV axles are in the way....they figured that out too. Projects like yours are what gets magazines worked up because it's so different. I'd like to see what a vehicle like that with the power at it's disposal and the ability to put it down to the ground with AWD would do on a road race course......cough cough, button shifting with a controller.....
