5 pinion billet planetary for the 4472

UPDATE 11/8/2008
These will be done Dec 14, 2008.
Fully compatible with the STOCK input shaft and the 32 spline billet input shaft that I sell.
Planetaries are complete.
The housing is 4140 preheat treat 2 piece and serviceable.
They will be 5 pinion instead of the stock 4 pinion arrangement.
The 5 gears will be 8620 case hardened. 8620 will be fine since there are so many gears in the housing now. Gears will be straight cut (spur) just like stock so no thrust and high load bearing ability is arranged.
Pinion gears will ride on needle bearings. Stock had NO bearings. Which is why the pinions always fall out during rebuilds. The unit will be round instead of the square pot metal configuration that is in them now. This will SIGNIFICANTLY strengthen the housing.
Total drop in unit whether you have the upgraded 32 spline input shaft or stock. It doesn't matter. This will fit all 1372/4472 transfer cases.
These are expensive complicated pieces.
I must get at least 10 units to make this happen. Any less than 10 isn't worth his time to manufacture.
Email me for availability of additional units.
This design also required a sun gear shaft. The sun gear shaft is 4340.
$1230.85 for the planetary and the sun gear shaft.
"Why are these so expensive?" is what I'm getting a LOT of. Unfortunately, these are NOT Hondas. If I could've had them machine 5000 of these, they'd be $150 each.
These are custom like special gear ratio sets for transmissions that other places are doing, which cost $2K+.
Unfortunately, the demand is not there for 5000 units and with less than 20 being produced of a custom part, the cost goes up. You will never see these again.
Because one of us had them made, me, I could control the material as well. 4340, 4140, and 8620 was used in this setup. NOT 8620 everything like is normally used.
The pinion have bearings now. Stock was just a stamped gear riding on a hardened shaft. NO bearings. All of that adds to cost. This is a no compromise design.
If you are the guy that says, "I can get 5 transfer cases for that." good for you, don't get a set. This is for the guy that does NOT WANT to replace transfer cases.
Once these are gone, they are GONE, I will NOT be having any more of these done. This has been a very stressful experience to say the least.
So if you want something VERY unique and overengineered, here it is.
This planetary is at the dead center of everything. All that power you make hits this planetary, then twists the sun gear shaft and then the viscous splits it based on tire slip.

This includes all fees incurred if you use CC or Paypal.
EMAIL me your phone number and how many you want at
cblake3@cinci.rr.com
I'm making NOTHING on these. They are very expensive and there is NO room for markup. I just wanted to make these available. I'll put up pics of the sun gear shafts when they are done.
Here's a shot of the planetary. Gorgeous pieces.

George, you have an e-mail :)

When you say these will be rebuildable, are they rebuildable with parts available through normal channels, or rebuildable with custom parts from this same guy? My concern is that a part being rebuildable doesn't do anyone any good if you can't get the parts to rebuild it :)

That was one reason for keeping the quantity so low. It would make it possible to keep plenty of pinions and planetary halves in stock. The hope is though, that they will never be needed due to the materials chosen. I want to play it safe though.

George

To bad I just had mine rebuilt....with the 32 spline output. It would have been the time to upgrade it.

Updated list. 10 are considered spoken for. There may be one or two extra. When items like this are made, enough components are made to make a few more than what is ordered in case something goes wrong on one or two of them. It happens. But if all of them make it through the process (this has happened on the last two input shaft orders), then I will make those units available. Thanks so much, everyone.

Re: 5 pinion billet planetary for the 4472

UPDATE:
The top halves are done. The bottom halves are done.
ALL the pinion gears are rough off the lathe and are set to have the teeth machined into them and be sent off for heat treat. All the needle bearings are in.
A full cad is coming my way here a little later and I'll post it up.
When I was in his office, he pulled up the CAD for me and it is just amazing how you can virtually pull it all apart, put it back together, subject the pieces to virtual forces and watch it move. It is literally ALIVE in the machine. I won't publicly post the blow apart, I'll only post up the fully assembled unit of the cad.
You guys got in on something good.

Re: 5 pinion billet planetary for the 4472

Update:
The first planetaries will begin assembly on Tuesday next week. They did make a few extra because I told them how much response I got here. So if you are wanting one, there will be extra, I'll find out how many on Tuesday. Jamie Hacking will be the first transfer case setup getting one and then Mr Stevenson and I'll take plenty of pics. I'm concerned about putting the drawings up because there is a lot of work in these and I don't care for the thought of someone just taking it. 5 design changes and 2 material changes. It wasn't an easy thing making a component with moving parts. These are damn cool.
Again, these are fully compatible with STOCK setups. So if you just want to take out the stock pot metal piece and pop this in, you can do that.
