ABS help

Ok, years ago I looked into this and never got back to trying to diagnose my ABS light in my Syclone.

I decided to read back through everything and give it another try, and I'm stumped.

I first jumped the ALDL, and get the motor to cycle, no problem.

When I try to pull codes, the light will barely blink, like it stays lit but you can faintly see it blink, it blinks a faint 14, which means nothing according to the ABS codes I have.

I have check resistance at the wheel speed connections, all test at between 1400 and 1700 which I have read is where they should be.

I have power with the key on at the purple wire, the pink wire, the white and the tan on the other plug going to the ABS unit. A second white wire off by itself has nothing, I'm assuming this is the wire for the light maybe? The light goes out when I unplug this connector.

I'm leaning towards the unit itself being bad, anyone have anything else to try or had an experience similar?

Re: ABS help

I have never done anything to the brakes myself, both the ABS light and the brake light were on when I got the truck years ago. The brake light I was able to get to go out with a reset, but never had luck with the ABS.

Now the master cylinder has been changed at some point, I don't know if it was to do with this problem or not.

Is there something special? The brake lights work correctly, and so does the cruise control.

Re: ABS help

When I had problems with my abs one of the problems I found was corroded wires and a broken connector behind the battery. I have since deleted my ABS completely.

Re: ABS help

No issues with corrosion, and this is a 20k mile truck. I just sold it, and was trying to see if I could get the light to go out for the new owner.

Re: ABS help

Some one once told me about these little re-set buttons? I was not sure if it was fact or fiction. I was having brake issues and spoke to some one cant really remember who it was but who ever it was told me about 2 buttons on the back of the abs unit that could be "poped". I have no clue what the buttons are, what they do, how they pop, if they trigger a light,.. so on... I did walk through a junk yard saturday and found a few that had been poped and I was able to push them in.

I took a picture of what the person described to me ( for your own reference just now on my typhoon )

I thought... you could check to see if either one is poped. if so push them in. see if it makes a difference. I havent seen anyone else point in that direction/tight spot. Like mention. Some one else pointed me in the direction worth a shot. One is pretty easy to get to, the other is like hidden behind the washer pump tank.

Re: ABS help

Had one of those things pop out on the wife's 93 Blazer this past winter. The light came on and the ABS quit working, pushed that sucker back in and all is good now.

Re: ABS help

Ugg...

I put in a known working EHCU, 2 master cylinders, both front calipers, rear wheel cylinders, all hoses, and it still did not work. I bled about two gallons of brake fluid and finally worked. Best I could tell is that it had an air pocket inside that would not move.

but I have a delete kit if it gives me one more problem...

Here's a good read...

Re: ABS help

Had the same issue after I replaced my master cylinder. Everything worked, but still the lights where on. I bled the brakes to death but both light still on. Took it to a guy and he bled the ABS unit. That fixed it.

Re: ABS help

I have also had a ABS light on for a few years. I cycled the motor a few times with a paper clip and the brake light went out but the ABS light stayed on. Yesterday, after reading this post, I checked my ABS unit and sure enough , one of the buttons was popped,

I didn't even know about them until this post. I pushed the button in with a flat tip screw driver and started the truck and the light remained on. I got out the old paper clip and cycled the unit a few times and it still would not go out. I gave up.

Drove it to the car cruise last night and on the way home the light went out and has not came back on yet. It had been on over three years. Seemed nice to drive it with out that annoying light.

Re: ABS help

I think this should be vaulted for future owners with the notorious abs light on...:2cents:

Re: ABS help

Mine just went on. There are no issues with the brakes. Nor were they serviced. The red brake light is on as well. I guess I need to check the emergency brake light switch.

Re: ABS help

Update: Pulled codes 21, 23, 26 and 28. Tested the right front sensor and no resistance. Driver side is around 14 ohms. Ordered new front sensors. Has anyone here replaced them. I am hoping I don't have to remove the bearing hub.

The abs sensor is attached to the dust shield. You have to remove the axle from the hub, remove the 3 bolts from the backside of the hub, it sits between the hub and knuckle/spindle.
