Adjusting Shift Cable

After searching and not finding many answers, here it goes.

After replacing my Ty shift cable (oem), The indicator is misaligned and showing the wrong position. Also when I click the shifter from OD to D it does not down shift until I move the shifter closer toward second.

One thread talked about bending the braket on the trans. But it seems to me the cable has some kind of adjustment on it as well, am I wrong? I will try to bend the braket tonight but was just curious if there was another way to adjust.

The indicator has a "U" shaped piece on the bottom that slips over a pin on the shifter assembly.Just take out the 2 screws in the cupholder, lift up the cover and make sure that the U goes over the pin.

As for the TV adjustment,it's cake.
With your left hand, push the button in and hold it,with your right hand just pull the cable to the right (drivers side.) Let go of the cable and the button. Twist the throttle linkage to WOT.The TV cable will ratchet "click click click" into it's desired position.

That's it.

One more thing, never EVER manually shift the trans. You WILL break it.

Edit: Go ahead and adjust the TV cable like I said anyway. The shifter cable should be fine as long as it works.

Re: Adjusting Shift Cable

Thanks again! I will have to check that out. If that is not the problem I will have to try the bracket.

The ONLY reason to bend the shifter bracket on the tranny pan is to clear a Gilbert propshaft. You shouldn't have to do anything for a simple cable replacement.

Re: Adjusting Shift Cable

After replacing the cable everything has been off slightly. Maybe I have the wrong cable?

Re: Adjusting Shift Cable

There is an ajustment on the transmission bracket (on the side of the tranny). The bolt ride in a slot. You have to be carefully when loosening the bolt if overly tight or it will bend the transmission cable. I would disconnect the transmission cable from the bracket and the trnamission bracket bofore adjusting it. I ruin a tranny shifter cable just like that.

Thanks, I will give it a shot in a bit. It has been my experience that every bolt on my truck is "overly tight"

Re: Adjusting Shift Cable

You've done like Jimmy said and you didn't get the little pin back in the groove where it goes. Interior aspect of the cable. Fix that before you adjust ANYTHING under the truck.

Re: Adjusting Shift Cable

I just took a look at everything. The shift indicator pin is in the correct location, that is easy enough.

When I put the shift cable on the first time the truck was stuck in reverse. Now with the new cable on it doesn't seem to engage park all the way either. It will roll on an incline and make a click click click as the trans slips.

Re: Adjusting Shift Cable

The syclone, typhoon, sonoma GT cable is a vehicle specific cable. Nothing else off the shelf will work. Make sure you have the cable in the right way too. It can be flipped over. Won't work right but it can be flipped.

Re: Adjusting Shift Cable

If I post a pic would it help at all? It went in fine and works great except for being off a bit. I just hate explaining how to drive the thing when I take it for service.

Re: Adjusting Shift Cable

searched and found this thread - when in park, it is now actually in reverse.

Beforehand, it would park fine, then it started clicking and rolling, now in park it is in reverse. i have done nothing to the trans apart from remove the pan and put a new filter in.

Would low trans fluid be the cause or something else? I am worried the trans is on the way out but if all I need to do is adjust the table then that would be good news.

Thanks,

Mark

Re: Adjusting Shift Cable

Disconnect the shifter cable from the trans.
Move the little arm on the trans as far forward as you can. That is park.
What will happen, is the rear ring gear will have to rotate a bit for the parking pawl to engage.
This is seen easily with the pan removed.
If you are going into park when you do it manually with the cable removed, then you need to find out if the cable, the bracket or something on the inside of the truck is damaged.
I sell a complete replacement kit for the cable and that thread has many pics in it you can use for reference:

Re: Adjusting Shift Cable

Thanks George. I will try and look at it later. I guess the easy check would be to remove the cable from the trans and just see what it does when I try and move it. Should it be firm or move easily?

Do I need to have it on stands with the engine running or anything?

Re: Adjusting Shift Cable

It'll have to be on stands. Engine off. By disconnecting the cable you'll be able to move the trans through all the gears without any of the safety's causing issues for you. There will be some resistance but not a lot. Push it all the way forward and then count the detents as you pull it back. Park, neutral, reverse, OD, D, 2, low. If you can take the pan off and watch everything as it happens. This way you'll be able to see if the parking linkage inside is missing anything also.

Re: Adjusting Shift Cable

ok - off comes the pan then!

I noticed some other symptoms today - the problem I have is that I have had an exhaust leak for so long now that I do not actually recognise the normal sounds of this truck!

When I was in park with my foot on the brake and the P Brake applied, there was a loud ticking noise, which I thought was the injectors. It wasn't discrete - inside the cab it was quite loud. As I revved the engine gently the ticking increased in speed, leading me to think it was the injectors.

But when I put it into gear (OD) the ticking disappeared. I am now starting to wonder if there was something in the tranny? Any ideas?

Thanks for your time George.

Re: Adjusting Shift Cable

When you put it in gear, it loads everything up (torque) and the noises disappear. So you've still got the leak or a heat shield loose.
Toward the back of the trans, if you follow the rod back, you'll see a piece that has a spring on it on the end. Now that I have a gallery and a web page, I'm gonna start putting this stuff up so guys can help themselves and see what I'm talking about. That spring allows the shifter handle inside to go to Park, but keep stress on the parking pawl until the rear ring gear rotates enough for the little finger to fall in. What you can do if it doesn't line up right away is get ahold of the front prop shaft and turn it until the trans turns enough to let it fall in. You'll have to have all 4 wheels up off the ground to do this.
Once you verify everything inside is OK. Then you'll have to go to the center console. There is a park neutral safety switch. Before you take this loose to get to the clip behind there to get the cable out, you MUST mark the ORIGINAL location of the assembly. If you didn't, you'll have to put the trans in park, install everything underneath and then do everything inside to get it lined up properly. There should be some marking from where the two 10mm nuts held it on. When you push it all the way forward for park, there is a cable that goes to brake interlock safety(makes you push the brake pedal to take it out of park). You'll see the spring loaded arm snap down when all is lined up correctly in PARK.
There are some pics in this thread you can use for reference:
This thread is the HD cable I make but everything applies just like it does with the stocker:

Re: Adjusting Shift Cable

Stupid question, but would low tranny fluid cause these symptoms?

park lock fails, then the trans starts to reverse in park , now making clicking noises. Could it all just be low fluid?

I have not checked it yet. Guess I should...

Re: Adjusting Shift Cable

Check it first. You could "what if" it all day but you won't know for sure until you get under there and do it.
