Any Experience Wrapping DP?

Just wondering if anyone has had any experience wrapping their the downpipe. I'm about ready to, but wondering how much consern I should have for metal breaking down.

Just trying to keep that lil' bit of extra heat out of my water.

the main concern with that (from the list ages ago) was the wrap getting soaked with fluid that might spew from various components (ie: trans lines, etc) and being a fire hazard.

can you wrap the Dp and then spray some sort of high temp sealer on the wrap to prevent soaking?

They do make a spray silicone type stuff thats supposed to keep most stuff from penetrating it.

I've heard some stories about the metal taking a beating from the wrap, but I guess I'll find out about that one myself. (need a reason to upgrade anyway if it does)

I keep a good sized extinguisher behind the pass seat, and so long as I keep an eye on things, I dont think I should have any problems with fire.

maybe a high temp paint clearcoat, do they make something like that?

I used header wrap on my stock DP and it definitely improved how fast my upper IC would heat up. The only problem is it cost me 45 bux for a V8 kit (all they had in stock) and 15 bux for metal ties. It was a fun chore doing it, even with the tire off.

With external-only coatings, the metal itself gets hotter. Normally, heat is passed from the exhaust gas to the metal to the atmosphere. If you block off the heat transfer to the atmosphere, the heat has nowhere to go and just stays in the metal. If you coat the inside also, there's not as much heat transferring into the metal in the first place, so not transferring it to the air isn't a big deal.

I assume it's the same with a wrap, just not as severe. Either way, blocking the heat from going into the atmosphere will make the metal itself hotter.

As an alternative, have you insulated the CAC? Rather than keep the heat out of the air, just keep the hot air away from the CAC... I plan to get my new downpipe coated (when the day comes that I decide to get one...) inside and out, so as to keep the heat out of the air and the metal...

My crossover has been wrapped for some time now. I can see where the metal temp would be hotter but I'd rather build a new pipe every few years than have all that heat radiating every where.

After wrapping mine I didn't have any of the silicon stuff. I put several coats of header paint and so far it still looks as good as the day I put it on.

thermotec, and likely the other wrap companies - dei, etc - make the paint.
i sell the thermotec - comes in black or silver.
its sposed to prevent the wrap from rotting over time - it sdoes seal it and reduce absortion of spewage.
when my motor goes back in, everything is getting wrapped.
