anyone using lojack

I've been thinking about having lojack installed on my truck. I was wondering if anyone had any better systems or ideas. I heard the gps systems were not very good. They say that the gps signal is limited to it's surroundings (tree's, garage, shipping container, ext.) I have alot invested in this truck, more than my insurance is willing to pay. I figure with this system, my chances of get my truck back is around 80%. (I think)

I found out that lojack is limited to if the police in your area is equiped with the detection systems. I live in San Francisco and they do not use the lojack system here. According to SFPD.

I was at one time looking at Lojack until I ws told of the drawback.
Here's a scenario, you're sleeping and the truck is stolen , say, at 2am,you wake up at 7am and realize it's gone. Now , you must physically go to the Police Station , fill out a report THEN they will activate the the tracking.
Can you imagine what can be done in 5-6 hrs.?

Here's a couple self-tracking systems:

I don't have a tracking system yet but in the meantime I have:
- Autolock
- Transmission lock
- Steering column collar
- tire boot Great deterrent! http://www.tirelock.com/product.php?cid=1&PHPSESSID=c4b396fad7f363e930878451963c61b9

- alarm
- laminate some form of I.D and slip it into one of the doors so if any a time arises proving it's yours remove the door panel and whip your I.D. out,

Tire boot sounds good but with that heavy metal object in the bed of the truck I can only imagine the launches

I use the club with a shield that goes over the steering wheel that prevents you from cutting the steering wheel and removing the club.

i got it back with lojack. took about 1 hour between the time i called it in and the time they found it. of course i dunno what time it was stolen so the above comments apply about what could happen between the time it's stolen and the time you realize it.

don't they have alarms now that will call your phone if it goes off? that would be pretty nice to know the instant someone is messing with your truck.

yep, they steal your stereo, tools, digital camera, battery and spare tire.

My truck was stolen April 15th 2002 (wow, tomorrow is the 2 year anniversary), anyway I have lojack with an alarm. Truck was stolen on a bright sunny afternoon in a populated area in Philadelphia, PA.

Truck was stolen between 3pm and 3:30pm when I called to report it.
Took till 4:30pm for the cop to arrive, since vehicle theft isnt priority.
Went over what happened and filled out paperwork till 5:30pm at which time it was called in.
Philly cops do have LoJack, but not all their cars have it.
6:51pm they located the Ty, appoximately 7 miles away parked on a side street in "da hood".

Truck was gone for a maximum of 3 hours 51 mins but it only took them 1 hour 21 mins to actually locate it.

It has its flaws, but if I didnt have LoJack, I would probably be without #180 today.

(note: this is the second time #180 has been stolen in its life, people love this thing  )

Yeah! I ordered the viper gps system. I already had a viper alarm, so it matched up. They have acouple cool feature's. The gps will call your phone and tell you if your car is stolen or if your alarm is going off. You can track it your self on the internet. You can call your car from your home phone and start your car, arm and disarm it. I should have it in this weak. the limitations are if your car is out of cell phone range of any cell site, it can't be tracked. It relies on cell sites to opperate. Ooh! Another draw back is the $100 to $140 per year it cost to use the sattalight.

I have a lojack in mine. However, after doing some reasearch I don't think I would do it again. I have seen a few cars that are stolen in the middle of the night and then completely stripped by the morning (when you wake up.)

I also have a paging alarm in mine, so if it is stolen I get notified right away.

However, if I were to do it again I would get a GPS based alarm that calls your cell phone. They work in such a way that if your car moves more than a pre-set distance from where you park it, it calls you. Some, like mentioned, you can call it back and do things - like shut it down I assume. There are lots of different ones out there and one very nice one was discussed on here a while ago. I will search my username to see if I can find it. Basically, it was cheap each year and had all the bells and whistles. You had to get a second line on your cell phone account, but there was some special deal with it that did not cost money. That may not be the case anymore but I am sure you can find a good deal.

GPS + cell phone would be my preferred method.

However, now I just stopped worrying. I have insurance. I can't live in fear all the time. If someone steals it, I'll just go get another one. It's not that big of a deal to me.

Here's my original post, hope it helps, although this is not the one I was looking for it might give you an idea of what is out there.

I got a LoJack, but have repeated heard it is practically worthless nowadays because someone will take your car at 2am, strip it by 5am, then dump the hull in a parking lot somewhere. Since there is no notification that your car is gone, it's too little, too late.

I am looking into something like this:

http://www.gpsonsale.com/vehicletra...Vehicle-Locator/VehicleLocator-Individual.htm

$399 one time for equipment (less than HALF the price of a Lojack)

Features:
Get Location
Geofence (if car moves out of specific location, you are called/paged <-- this is what I want)
Starter disable / enable
3 second extra output (unlock doors, honk horn, flash lights, etc)
Alarm input #1 (gnd for 12 seconds)
Alarm input #2 (gnd for 12 seconds)
25 packets per month for $9.75
There is a one time $25.00 airtime activation fee.
The first months airtime and activation fee are charged when a unit is activated.
One year contract, afterwards month to month

I am seriously considering one of these, now that pricing has come down so much. I know I will sleep much better at night.

We use aircepts version of the one the RS2.5 mentioned above. We use them to help us repo cars on the people that we finance. They work great. I think it costs about $3 per month and you get 2-3 locates each month. You can disengage the starter too. Using this system we have been able to locate every car that we looked for. We buy them in bulk, so if you want one I could probably sell you one for around $275.
