Are DSM's Fast?

I saw a few posts that questioned if awd talons and eclipses are quick.
stock 1gen DSMs runs 15's or so in the 1/4, but with minor mods can be very very fast. I know this because i am 19 and have like 5 friends all with AWD DSM's. With a K&N and downpipe and exhaust upgrades with a boost controller and a clutch ran consistent 12.8 at around 108mph with a 0-60 at about 4.1-4.2 secs. and thats with a stock turbo pushin 20psi.

So yes these cars can be very quick with minor mods. and that u can buy one of these cars for around $3000 all day long make these cars very affordable too. There is a video on Kazaa of a BPU talon vs a typhoon and the ty puts like a 1/4 car length from 0-30 then gets pulled on.

Beware of the DSMs

errrr... no

it takes alot more than those upgrades to run that fast 1/4. They can be fast if alot of money and effort is put into them. your post is pretty random and worthless. this definatly belongs in the offtopic forum.... at a dsm forum.

well off topic or not u guyz asked if DSMs are fast and i gave my 2 cents. I have seen many runs on this kids DSMs i have been in it when he race brand new ls1 cameros and firebirds on rolls and walks away from them. Also if u think i bullshit u can go to busherracing.com and they have packages that cast less then $1500 that well make the car run 12.40s.

Well someone can ask the dude that lost to the DSM this year at the nats in the street race what he thinks of them......

0-60 in 4.1 sec uh no  . cars that do that require slicks/awd and 5-600 hp. not for 1500 bucks. 12.40 for 1500.00 I can get talons for 1200 around here so you are saying for 2700.00 I can have a talon in the mid 12s

2003 Viper SRT10 0-60 in 3.9... :drinking:

Rergarding DSM's..they can get fast for cheap.
BUT, once you start enjoying it, expect something wrong to happen. those are some of the worst built cars ever. mine has been sitting for 4 months now. :x but when it ran, it was fun.

typically, with intake, a turbo back exhaust, good clutch, ported or tubular o2 housing, 18psi, fuel pump and rewire, and AWD, a 13.0 pass can be done.
but that would require lots of luck...ie the car is running right.

Plus you can't even take a trip to the grocery store without seeing 100 of them on the way. There is just too many of them out there. Who wants to be like everyone else? One of my buddies has one. He bought it and drove it for about 3 weeks before the transmission and motor let go. I guess trying to launch with the Ty isn't too easy on em. :D

ken should know about this.
if you go to a junk yard, you are guaranteed to see a few there.
cheap parts to fix your broken POS.

DSMs can be fast....

many watched as kris's sy lost out to a very fast DSM along with $200 of everyones money...

he was doing easy 11s, so he claimed.....the car pulled hard as shit when we were messing around going back to the hotel...

the 1st gens are easy to mod, much like our trucks... $500-1000 and your in the 13s and 12s for them....

yeah DSMs CAN be fast. doesn't mean they all are.

Theres a wht/wht 2nd gen here that runs into the 11s.
Lots of $$$ to get there and everytime I have seen him this year he has not had his car there... BC ITS BROKEN!
I think he said he is up to like 5 trannys now.
They did go through the whole motor last winter, forged pistons, ported head, big turbo, Fuel Mgmt, etc etc...
He spent more on the motor than he bought he whole car for.
And he hasn't driven it in months.

The joys of being a DSM owner...

Thats assuming the turbo is good, the clutch, the driveline, the motor, and a lot of luck. seriously, these cars are pieces of shit. but once you replace everything that could possibly break with stronger, new stuff. you are set.
(a lot of $$$)

They dont weigh much. 3100lbs and 350hp is a fast dsm...

Same goes for a sy/ty. :fist: GM

yeah, good point
however in a dsm you could have been going easy on your dsm for 2 months then all of a sudden, you spin a bearing, or frag your tranny, or snap a timing belt.
they are really bad at breaking and falling apart.
once you get past replacing everything you are set with a nice ride.
but not safe.

that is a major reason I dont want mine.

with a syty typicaly from what i have seen you dont brake them unless you drive it hard.

I've seen it both ways. GM has piss poor quality control, I've seen babied trucks frag tranny's at 30k and beaten trucks run to 100k on the stock tranny. Same goes for motor's, propshaft's, etc.. I'd never recommend one to someone who doesn't have deep pocket's and who needs it as a primary form of reliable transportation.

BTW, where's the vid of the syclone getting it's ass kicked at the nats by the DSM? I know someone got that on tape.

well everyone has there OPINONS. So im not gonna post anymore untill i got evidence and i am bringin a video camera so i can show u the talon i am talkin about with less the $600 into it raping my typhoon which did a best of 12.6 in the 1/4.

I have both, and yes, they're fast. My Talon may even hit 11's before the Syclone. The nice thing about the Talon is the damn thing just rails in the turns; I'm talking about 95 mph + drifts with total confidence in the car's ability to stay planted. I have KYB AGX struts, Eibach Pro Kit, stock wheels and bald tires on the Talon. With strut tower braces and the 17" Konig Monsoon's with 235/40/17's I just ordered, it should handle even better :D Lots of fun to drive...maybe even more so than the Sy. It does have a "cheap" feel to it, but this is a fun car and, unlike the Sy, I can beat on it hard and not worry about breaking it. There are so many in the junkyards, parts are always readily available. I say get a Sy/Ty and a DSM! But...I will NEVER sell my Sy.

I will throw in my opinon in here beacuse I own a dsm. It's a love/hate realtionship. One day my car runs great, pulls hard, and thinks it can take down anything. The next day my car will run like shit(idle at 1500 rpms for no aperant reason) go slow as hell(the other night I went from puting 10+ carslengts on a civic dx to not being able to pull more than 1 full car on in him in about 20 miuntes). DSM's are proalby one of the best bang for you buck cars ever built. 1/4 mi times of 14.9 stock, and easly into the 13's for not very much(50$ for a boost gauge, 50$ for a MBC, 70$ for a test pipe, and 20$ for some race gas) but then shit starts breaking, first you smoke your clutch, then you thorow in a ACT 2600lb clutch and bam, there goes your center diff, and trany. Then there is just the anoying matince shit that is alwase wrong. Lets look at the list i've put into my car sence i bought it last december. New belts(twice), Crank pully, Plugs(twice) wires(twice) coils, O2 sensor, Timing belt, Water pump, Brake pads, Battery, fuel filter, fule line, and some other shit I've proably forgoten. My car also has a horibal leak at the Exhaust manifold, and makes the most anoying click sound in the universe(on top of the bad lifter tick). I think my turbo is on its way out, and I just replaced the cat with a whole new turbo back exhaust beacuse it was throwing CEL's. Bottm line, DSM's are cheap speed, but require deep pockets to keep them runing right. But AWD, Light weight, a cheap entry price(i've seen well running examples for around 3,200$ for an awd turbo moddle)and a some strong internals from the factory(the bottom end in the early 1G's will hold 450 hp, the rest take about 400 stock) make one hell of a combo for some one with limited funds.
