Back to original

I'm new to this forum, and I've only owned my Syclone for about a month. It's almost perfect with about 70,000 miles but the paint is seriously oxidized. So I went to a painter yesterday who will shoot the whole truck, sheet metal, cladding and bed for a price. So OK, but I want the truck as close to original as possible. What would you ask this guy to do?

Thanks in advance, Dave

Re: Back to original

Is he going to take the truck apart? IE doors off bed off fenders off? or justa tape and spray?

tell him to do a good job

You can tell him all you want unless you pay him you will get the same job as everybody else, remember 99.9% of a good paint job is prep work and its black that shows everything, unless the panels are perfect it will look like feces

Buff it out. Keep the original paint.
If the original paint isn't so bad that its flaking off and exposing the primer underneath, a good detailing shop (or yourself with the right equipment) can make crappy paint like ours look pretty damn good. Mine was CRAPPY, and it came out looking like a bizillion bucks....

Looks good Adam, what products and steps did you use? Mine was oxidized too and really came to life after a good power polish using some Meguirs products with a random orbit polisher. I've heard great things about Zaino but I have yet to try it myself.

I'm always amazed at how a crappy looking paint job can turn in to something so beautiful. Nice truck

IMO Yes you can shine up the orignal paint job (some don't even take much work) but the factory paint jobs still is cheap, thin and lacks depth. My truck looks great alone, but when I put it next any SyTy with a decent clearcoat paint job, it looks dull. Even those 10-20 footers look much better at distance.

Re: Back to original

First off make sure the cladding comes off the truck and he is aware how fragile and rare those pieces are.

All of the schematics and diagrams are at www.sytyauthority.net/cladding.html

I second that if you are going for perfection all the glass has to come out.
And I would paint the cladding black to match the body.
The way they all shoulda been.

Good time to consider that sliding rag top you have been dreaming of since '86 too!

Re: Back to original

I would go to a detailer and see what he can do first. I had a friend buy a car that the paint was oxidized real bad and instead of painting the truck he had it wet sanded and recleared. The clear was the part that was making it look crappy. DAM what a difference. Everyone thought he got it painted. Just an idea.

I used cash, and a trip to a reputable detailer. I picked the truck up on a Sunday after they left it outside for me, and almost immediately realized the reputable detailer put 7 miles on it.:fist: Needless to say, I tell everybody I can find that the place sucks and the guy is a dick.

Thats why I write my mileage on a sticky note, initial it and post it OVER my odometer.
Just one more reason I don't leave my truck unsupervised anywhere.

Thats why when I take the truck somewhere if it needs something I cant do. I tell them I'm leaving it where they will work on it, and if they need to move it to call me.. Take the chip out and have no problems. If they cant understand that my truck is rare, and worth more then half the shit on their lot then they have no business touching it in the first place.
