Camshaft removal

Probably a stupid question. I couldn't find anything with a search.

I'm looking to take the camshaft out of my motor. I'm wondering if there is a trick or tool I can use to do this smoothly. With Fords, the center of the cam is threaded so you can put a long bolt into it and use that as a handle.

Is there some sort of trick like this for these motors? I want to have something I can grab hold of to keep from slamming cam lobes into cam bearings on the way out.

OK. Thanks. That's what I was thinking. Just wanted to run it past you guys. Now to find long bolts that skinny.

Yeah its a bit tricky to get a cam out of most pushrod motors. Just take your time and go slow. But, I will add this. You might want to replace the bearings while its out. Would suck if in a few months you need them and could have at this point ya know. (that goes with all the other bearings as well)

Just remove the chain and reinstall the sprocket and use that. It won't come all the way out though. (Hits the AC condenser.) There's a thread somewhere but as I recall you have to move the condenser up and out a bit but it can be done.

The motor is out of the truck so I don't have to worry about the A/C condensor. I just went to Home Depot and found a 4" bolt to put into the cam.

DaveP. I like that idea you gave there. Takes gravity out of the equation.

I'll get the cam out and then it's off to the machine shop to look things over. I'll wait to talk to the shop before taking the bottom end out.

Thanks again everyone.

Re: Camshaft removal

With pistons out you can also reach in through a cyl and support the cam that way. New cam bearings are definitely in order at this stage, Durabond being the best I'm told.
