Re: Cheap 4l80e conversion

OK got a little more done. I decided to ditch my wiring set up as far as connections go and went a different route. I soldered the SYTY ECM wires in for a T. Then ran everything to removable connectors. like Molex type connectors. Turned out real nice.

Anyway, I started on the shift kit since I am waiting to get my converter back. I bought the Transgo HD2. It cost about $150 from PATC. I have to say that installing this so far has been pretty straight forward except for one thing. They tell you to drill this hole out but I will say you have to be pretty good to not screw up things around it. I'll get to that.

First I pulled the pan, pretty self explanatory I think

Grabbed the kit

Pulled the filter and harness

I removed the VB with the trans sitting straight up and oddly enough, NONE of the check balls fell out. So I went ahead and carefully removed the sep plate. Then I vasolined the balls in the case in.

Here is where you drill the hole. You can see I got some of the surface, luckily its just a nick. I went with the dremel with a bur on it. This made the job way easy.

For the rest of the shift kit, so far it has been easy according to the directions. If I run in to anymore lame stuff on that I'll post it up.

I would suggest you wire up the TOSS into the 95 ecm per factory wiring and VSS in transfer case leave it stock. I have not confirmed it and it hasn't caused an issue I know of, but I don't believe the TOSS count and our VSS count is the same per revolution. This will cause the 95 ECM to think the trans is slipping.

The TISS and TOSS are used by 95 ECM to verify what gear is selected, any slippage, etc.

Also be sure to jumper the ecm to it doesn't think it is in 4x4 LOW mode which will disable OD and changes shift points as it assumes the transfer case is now in low range. Learned this one the hardway also.

You can verify the jumper on tunerpro once you get it powered on.

Correct me if I am wrong here, the TOSS and VSS wires between the 95 and the SYTY are the same colors arent they? I was also under the impression that they do essentially the same thing and go to the DRAC.

Not sure on colors but they serve the same function yes. You could wire up the TOSS and just leave the VSS off, and recal the DRAC so speedo works as it should and syty ECM sees the correct speed.

So how did you guys do yours, Darons and Jeremys? I just dont get how you wire that up using the VSS and the TOSS.

If you leave the VSS off, wouldn't your speedo be wrong since the reading would come from before the Viscous Coupler (which to my knowledge, slips)?

Re: Cheap 4l80e conversion

Jeremy's we used the VSS on transfer case, skiped the TOSS. Had a slip code in ecm we never resolved but it never seemed to hurt anything.

Daron's I believe I wired up the TOSS, left the VSS unhooked.

Viscous coupler "slips" for the front only, the rear is a direct couple.

The only reason GM put the VSS on transfer case was #1, the output shaft housing is not there for 4x4 apps, and #2 to know the actual drive shaft speed (4 low applications).

I'm glad to see someone finally going this route again.. Also glad to hear that my info was correct. Let me know if you find anything that I need to change. I'm thinking a Visio diagram showing how everything gets wired would be really helpful. I've just never had the time/motivation to put one together.

Re: Cheap 4l80e conversion

Here is why I am so thrown off by this. On Matts page, it says TOSS gets wired to VSS, Purple/white---->C12 and Green/Black---->C7. These wire colors are the same ones that are twisted on the stock Ty that go to the VSS. If you look over the entire chart, there is no wiring for the TOSS that goes to the ECM. It just says to VSS.

Now looking at the wiring diagram Poconojoe sent me for the 1995 80e ECM, it looks like I need to skip the VSS and use the TOSS like Jeff said. If I wire it like this, will the speedo work right?

Re: Cheap 4l80e conversion

Getting this back on track. I am currently working on electrical stuff in the cab and will hopefully be done by Friday. For now, I have installed the shifter cable. While this isn't a monumental job and I was considering not even posting about it but I ran in to an odd problem.

The threads on the end don't seem to go high enough on the cable end leaving you un able to to have the fitting threaded on the normal way. This could be that I was doing something wrong but honestly, both ends are exactly the the same and it just plain didn't fit right. So what I did was turn the round fitting around, stuff the cable through the shifter bracket first then thread the round fitting on.

I got my drive shaft back today and will likely be installing the trans this weekend. I will also be building my own x-member.

Re: Cheap 4l80e conversion

I have gotten the trans installed, cross member built and have had the Ty driving with the set up. Turns out I had a loud whining sound coming from the converter/pump area so I decided to open up the trans and rebuild it.

I will document the build as it will be a light freshen it up deal and will take pics of the install when I am done. The wiring seems to have been correct as far as I can tell and everything worked ok except the trans didn't have very firm shifts. I am thinking that was related to the whining sound but who knows. I did find so far that a lot of the clutches and bands didn't look so hot.

So far, with everything, I have $2,400.00 in to this project and that will include the rebuild kit minus any parts I may come across that I may need.

Re: Cheap 4l80e conversion

I have been getting people asking about rebuilding their 700's and keep pointing them to this thread as most think the 80e can't be had for less than 5-6k. I just wanted to update this thread and its costs I posted along with the results.

Altought I haven't driven the damn thing in 3 years, the trans was working great and even though I did tear it down and rebuild it, it didn't need a single thing. Turns out the local shop I was getting the converter from didn't sell me a good product. I can't really blame him much as this was his first Frankenstein. I had TCS build me a converter which needed to be restalled (not uncommon) but once it was holy shit was it a great performer. So above, all info has been updated.

Followed your thread/build in almost every way besides the controller & trans support tube...almost 2000.00 into it minus the fluids. Can't wait to drive it soon!
