Check Engine light???

Hello all...

I have a phantom check engine light on my SY that goes on at idle (mostly when cold) and goes away at cruising speed...??? Very frustrating . Truck runs great, but this is making me crazy.

Here's what I've changed out.
Plugs/Wires, Rotor, Cap
Coil
EGR components
OXY sensor
Air Filter
I've removed the battery to reset the computer, but it keeps coming back.

I'm somewhat of a new SY owner, so I'm stuck on this one...has anyone had a similar issue. Please help!!! Thanks Guys.

Re: Check Engine light???

So have you pulled the code to find out what the potential prob is?

Re: Check Engine light???

I haven't. I don't have the program setup for it. I did take it into a local guy. He said it's oxy sensor related, but I changed the sensor...

Re: Check Engine light???

hmmm...that's pretty cool. Thanks for the tip. I'll let you know what codes i get back. The first guys said to use the paper clip, and I was like "huh? is that a joke or something???" Thanks for the clarification guys.

Re: Check Engine light???

if you're going to randomly throw parts at one of these truck to turn off a check engine light you might wanna buy a new truck, probably cheaper

Hey SYO237,

Used the clip trick and got code 45.
Code 45 "O2/Rich Exhaust"

Not sure where to go from here.

An thanks for being helpful Necro. Why post, if you have no input?

Re: Check Engine light???

I think what necro was trying to say was get Datamaster and a datamaster cable.

Randomly throwing parts at these finnicky damn trucks to get rid of an SES light is like tossing money into a fire.
You wont regret having datamaster, i assure you. Itll show you all your vital info as well as DTC codes and what the codes mean. IMHO DM would be any sy/ty owners first purchase unless they are a glutton for punishment.

Need to list what mods you have if any.... chip modifications, exhaust, AFPR, etc. to help more.

Offhand, I would check over your vacuum lines for leaks. If they are orig, you need to replace them with quality silicon hose. You'd be surprised how many problems get fixed just because of vac leaks.

and baFoon is correct on the datamaster stuff....

Re: Check Engine light???

Understood. We're not all pros on these motors you know...

As mentioned, I'm a new syclone owner tryng to get a handle on the tuning. I post because i need input, and want to learn. I'll look into the data master. Thanks guys.

I've looked for vacuum leaks before, but I'll try harder. That may be the issue.

I wrote a website with guides for new SyTy owners to learn how to get a handle on tuning, even if you're not a pro on the motor to begin with. I bet you'll enjoy the useful information, check it out by starting here: How to Get a Stock Truck Deep in the 13's.

that is my input. if you're just throwing parts at like you are, you're wasting money. here is data master. you're going to need a laptop and an data cable. or you could get a quality scantool that does data logging/streaming. there is an extreme wealth of information here and on tooky's website. a rich code could mean a bad injector, fuel pressure regulator, a miss, or a whole mess of other issues.

how did your plugs look when you changed them? did one look fouled or wet? or did they all look wet? are your vacum lines old? these trucks are tempramental and the ecm isn't really sophisticated enough for these engines as far as sensors and monitoring.

Re: Check Engine light???

Thanks. I'm definatley going to get the datamaster.

Plugs weren't too bad, just old. Vacum line seem ok, although i will take a closer look there. How about the injectors? What are the symptoms of bad injectors?

Re: Check Engine light???

Anyone know of any retaliers who sell the linking cables for the laptop to the SY computer? Autozone only sells the scan tools...??

Re: Check Engine light???

Mine was doing the exact same thing when I got it. It was a vacuum leak. The hose for the cruise control and what ever else is on that line had come off of the TB(or intake---I forget where it hooks up right this second)

There is also a test called the bicycle tube test for finding vacuum leaks. Yes that's true and not a joke as well. I don't know how well it works when looking at vacuum lines with all the check valves in them though.

I got my cable from detroit turbo. You can get the whole package through them as well. The first place to look when trying to find this type of stuff is the preferred vendor section at the bottom of the main page.

erue sells them, dont buy a autozone scanner get datamaster and if you look hard enough hint hint you can find the software pretty easy and cheap, get my drift.
