Chip Instalation

When I bought my Sy I was given a couple of free mods along with the truck. I was given an ATR pitbull chip and a Kenne Bell chip also. It seems to me that the ATR is the way to go. Are these chips Sy and Ty specific or are they able to be used on other vehicles as well? I guess what I'm really asking is should I trust the chip this guy gave me or do I need to try and buy a new one? If I do use the ATR chip How and where is it instaled? I am also still looking for a place to buy additional ATR products, does such a place exist? I amnew around this forum but I am trying to learn. Whats all this talk about two and three bar? Seems to have something to do with the computer?

Don't install the Kenne Bell aka Kaboom chip. Between the two the ATR is the better chip from a safe stand point and is hardly much more in performance over a stock chip. Many still use this chip including myself but if your going to turn the boost up beyond 14-15psi you should look into a 3bar chip for better fueling.

As far as if the ATR Chip was used in other vehicles.. I know it was availiable to the Buick Grand National guys back in the day but you can tell if it's syty by the number listed on top of the chip. Most likely it's for the syty they are common.

3bar 2bar talk.. this may help explain further

ATR is no longer in business as of a few months ago. Look to the vendors on this site for further modifications and parts they are syty owners themselves which helps.

Re: Chip Instalation

You put the ATR chip in the ECM, computer box, behind the dash behind the glove box. You access the ECM by removing the panel at the bottom of the dash (passenger’s side). By the floor light, you will see a mettle plate secured to the bottom of the dash. Remove the screw and with some effort, the ECM will come out. It has a tendency to snag on the kick panel.

After you have the ECM hanging by the wires, you can remove the two screws that hold on the small plate. Behind the plate you will see the chip holder. It has clips on both sides that will allow you to remove it from the circuit board.

Put your new chip in and reverse the process.

I let my ECM hang until I test the chip. Then I put the box back.

Good luck.

Not too sure if I agree w/this comment.
When my Sy was stock....it ran 13.9 - 14.1 @ 3000ft elevation ,w/Pitbull chip it ran13.5
I think a half second is a little better than hardly better.?
KB's chip had less knock retard than the Pitbull chip.
Anyone else agree???
Have fun w/the ATR chip!!

ATR Pitbull raises rev limiter, removes boost limiter, enables IC pump earlier, gives a slightly smoother idle, runs richer then most in the lower rpms, runs on open loop boost control, with no change in fueling or timing from 15 or higher psi due to being calibrated for 2bar which im sure your aware of. It also runs a set duty cycle for wastegate duty cycle from what i've seen so to me it's pretty close to stock spec which wouldn't yeild too much more of a increase in performance I would think. I know it didn't drops .5s or a second off my time. Im also assuming that you and the person who started the thread are talking about the Sy137(street) chip.. because that's what I have.

So I guess it's a junk chip since it did not improve your times ( it's just like stock ,yeah right

I finally got the ccip in this evening and I had a few problems? I think I know the answer but I want to be sure. When I first put the chip in I took it for a spin and when I got on it, it started knocking and didn't really go anywhere? So I went to the gas station and got some fuel cruised around a bit and throutle and it felt really strong. So a few moments later I gave it a good stomp and it didn't knock but it kind of stuttered, your thoughts please. I did all this with out disconecting my battery, could this be the problem? It is inthe garage disconnected as we speak.

Re: Chip Instalation

I would look at getting a water/methonal injection set up.
Do you have a scan tool?
I had to run good pump gas for my pitbull chip.
Make sure you can what ever possible to keep your manifold air temps down. Insulate intercooler, lines hoses ,etc. I think I remember it takes about 12 degrees of knock retard to actually here the engine knock? Meaning ,it could be getting knock & you will not be able to hear it. Help anyone on the last statement.
How much fuel was in your tank when you stepped on it?
Goos luck!

:stupid:

12's, let alone low 12's are rare with that chip....as is 108mph
I would never believe it would drop .5 off a time for most trucks, however i'm sure it has for some. I just don't think it is that common.

The ultimate is still the best chip out there short of a custom one.

now kindly point out to me and everyone else where I claimed that this chip was "a junk chip"
I clearly stated in my post before that one that it's the best of the 2bar chips and much safer then pretty much all other 2bars out there. What did I say about the ATR Pitbull chip that wasn't true or up to par with your results/findings? I've been using this chip for at least three years now daily because i've put my money else where.. Now for me to come on here and tell this guy that with simply an ATR Pitbull chip instatlled over stock he will net low 12s possibly 12.20s with no other mods would be a lie. Sure there may be a few exceptions but most likely it's not gonna happen in a bone stock truck. am I wrong?

First off did you pull the ecm b fuse after the install? that will reset the computer and it'll reset all the previously set varables and re-learn everything. oh I see from reading further you've disconnected the battery.. I think if it's disconnected for sometime then you don't have to pull the fuse possibly so that work.

What chip did you have? was it the street chip which would have said "Sy137" on it or was it the Race chip which would say "Sy138a" on it.

I don't know what the octane requirements are for the "race chip" but I know for the street chip myself i've ran nothing but 93 pump gas and up. It's not worth the damage that could be done to your motor from being cheap at the pump.

I'd also suggest doing what "it's just a six" suggested and pickup a scantool like datamaster if you have a laptop because also like he said. You need to see what's going on inside these motors because you can't hear knock most of the time.. if you can hear knock then it's an extreme amount of it and you should not mash the pedel until you get it taken care of.

Also please read thru the basic safty mods list or here http://www.sportmachines.com/maintenance/beginner.php before you get on it anymore. If you have a stock fuel pump don't race it with less then half a tank of gas or you'll be rebuilding it soon. Also you must keep your intake temps down.. lower the better. It should be all covered on that link or you can do a search it's been discussed time and time again.

Good luck

Re: Chip Instalation

Thanks for all your input I did only have a quarter of a tank in it when I first mashed the pedal down. It has always run on supreme by its previous owner and I'm not breaking that tradition. Do both the street and race chips say PITBULL? I know this chip did but I thought it said Sy137 on it aswell. Where can I find a datamaster "scan tool"? That sounds like it could really help.

Re: Chip Instalation

Unless your not planning on going into boost, always put 93 octane in (some places can only get 91 which can be a limiting factor).

A little off topic, but your average joe believes fuel grades = quality. It's the fuel companies fault for selling it to you in such a way, labeling the base fuel as just ' who cares regular' and the 93 octane as 'Super !###!F*CKING AWESOME!###!ll! fuel'. The difference between grades at any givin station that really matters is the octane ratings. Engines are designed to run under certain conditions, putting a lower fuel grade in a car than its designed for is like going in on a box of el-cheapo condoms. Sure you can use it, but it may end up costing you a lot of money in the end.

The relatively high boost levels inside our cylinder walls combined with the timing and fueling maps on the chips we run dictate what fuel we put in the tank. Put in 93.

As for your chip, its a pitbull street chip (http://www.syty.org/old/promguide.html -bottom table).

If your chip runs like crap, double check to make sure its seated correctly. If it still runs like poop, sell it on ebay and run your stocker.

Don't know i've never owned the race chip from ATR but it is concidered a Pitbull chip so most likely.

Datamaster software can be downloaded at www.ttspowersystems.com for free but it only allows you to use the record feature like 10 or 20 times I don't remember exactly, until you have to register (pay for it) then you can record all you want. You can purchase it here

That was the best time difference, iceing down intercooler, regular things to do, let the engine cool down etc. On average I gained @ least.3 tenths in the 1/4.
You were stating that the pitbull chip is just like a stock chip, three tenths is good increase in ET.
My stock chip never ran better than 13.9 usually ran 14's
I think the pitbull chip is decent.
It takes tuning to run low 12's w/a pitbull chip, I think most people that have used a pitbull chip gave up before they really tried to run their best.Looking for that better chip.? Maybe ,,who knows

Right you've stated that already which is completely believable on a stock truck. but to say you ran 12.20's with just a pitbull was hard for me to swallow. Pitbull for me has helped shave off two tenths which was expected of course.

Well three tenths is three tenths so yeah that's a decent increase but you said .5 tenths afew post up but anyway I feel that it is basically a stock chip with a few safe tweaks in it wouldn't you agree? I mean it's not adding boost, it's hardly adding any timing but does add fueling, basic boost control, disables the boost limit and raises rpm limit while enabling the ic pump earlier.

I also think it's decent especally since it's on the cheap side besides i've used it over the stock chip for three years now but to purchase new for performances intended money wise i'd save a few more dollars and purchase a 3bar chip of some kind with more settings/features.

I agree and it's most likely due to the fact that it's a 2bar chip so why tune to your blue in the face on 2bar when you could be running 3bar psi numbers and possibly getting more for your money/time just my opinion..

I never stated it ran 12.29 w/just a pitbull chip, no no other mods. Just stated that's what chip I had @ the time. ;)
