Chitown tech LED KR

I want to wire up a knock retard light per chitown tech section description, but I have NO idea what it's saying. I have an ultimate chip, and I was wondering if it was even possible to wire it up, but I don't know if you wire it to the ultimate chip or the stock chip that gets piggybacked on the ultimate. Here's a link to the section:

Maybe I just need it explained in a different way, but it's just not clicking. Thanks

It wires up to the ESC half of the MEMCAL. See http://syclone.invisibill.net/memcal.html for MEMCAL details.

The Ultimate doesn't have the ESC circuit on it. That's why you have to piggyback the stock MEMCAL. So you could wire it either to the ESC on the stock MEMCAL, or to the piggyback pins on the Ultimate carrier.

Casper Electronics makes a knock sensor gage with several lights on it for degrees of knock. Seen it used on several Ty's. All had FAST on them but one I saw that didn't and it worked. I think all you need is the Gage and the ESC Sensor from a Buick. I am looking into it and I will let you know what I find out.

Gage is $79.95 and the ESC module is $79.95

Here is a link to one style of the gage. (They make black face, white face, etc.)

Not on the gage is:
NOTE: Wires to a standard GM ESC module, used in the Grand National turbo applications; if you need to use this gage in a non-turbo application, an ESC module is required.

Hope that helps.

That thing looks pretty sweet. Are you running FAST? If not, when you get it hooked up post how well it works and whatnot...I'd definitely be interested.

The nice thing about the knock retard LED setup is that it uses the factory filtering, and you know exactly when your truck is actually retarding timing. The Casper setup will only work with the Buick ESC, and you will not know exactly when/if the stock computer is pulling timing. The filtering is different than for the syty's; it's akin to using the MSD detector or the J&S system. I guess it's useful as a tuning aid, but it's information that just needs to be said.

What BG said. From what I've seen of the fancy gauges, many have their own knock detection circuitry. So they're only as accurate as your matching them with the stock ESC. If you set the gauge to 0 while you have 10° of KR, then you'll always get incorrect readings. This LED, on the other hand, basically just adds a visual indicator into the existing circuitry.

I plan to add one to mine sometime. I figure I'll mount the LED on my Lotek next to my boost gauge. It's obviously not a replacement for DM or anything, but it's a simple visual telling me if/how much I'm knocking, without having to drag a laptop everywhere.

How many folks have gotten the LED to work?

This is still a real interesting project to me...

I think this is the same circuit that the new Ultimates use for the knock LED.

I've got an ATR MEMCAL here that I'm playing with. I'm trying to rig up something PnP, so everybody could buy one and just slap it on. I've got a couple ideas, but I haven't really tried them out yet.

As to the whole "everybody buying one" thing, the parts are $.69 from Mouser. If I did sell this, I'm figuring $5-$10 each, shipped. I'm not out to rip people off, and I'm not trying to get rich from it. I'd like to cover the time I spend on it, but I really just like to be able to help people out. I think our community would be much better off if every SyTy had one of these LEDs. =)

I uploaded my copy of this stuff to http://syclone.invisibill.net/knockled/ also. The Powerpoint diagram thing only works in IE, so I saved it as an image...

I agree...
Include a lenght of cable to mount and sell me a few, k?

wake up the dead

wake up the dead

I am wondering if anyone has completed or continued this project . I see this has been dead since July .

Anyone else have an intrest in this ??

i think the factory boost gauge would be a cooler project...maybe one of our geniuses could look into that one again...anybody that is concerned with knock, has an aftermarket boost gauge installed anyway...

It's not the same circuit although it operates on the same principle.

Any more info ??

Any more info ??

Can someone elaborate more on how to complete this . I dont plan on hard wiring into the esc on my memcal , and with the B8 pin not working , which one is the correct one to solder to on my G1 memory adapter inbetween my memcal and my ecm ?

I completly agree with you 100%.

is the factory oilpressure gauge being steered by resistance (prolly yes)

the knock sensor is being steered by resistance also? (thought the ECM used 2-4 volts, if it is under or above that reach it will set a code)

Please give me some more information on this one,

i understand that the knock sensor generates electricity when it senses knock...so it generates its own voltage and sends it to the ecm....i happen to have a spare set of syty gauges that i could lend to a smart person that wants to tackle this...

smart persons don''t have Syty''s

we just need to find the wire that goes to the stock boostgauge.

the boost readings in the ECM are coming from the map sensor.
these readings get passed to the gauge? or is there a muliple reading from a second sensor, just like the temp. sensors are different from ECM and Gauges.

btw. with that extra set of gauges you can do some serious testing!

just a 6

The stock boost gauge reads voltage 0-5 volt, it's wire is spliced in to one of the wires from the MAP to the ECU. Very cheap and easy by GM.

There is another post about this were me and another BB member was talking about using som GN parts to get this to work, sense the knock sensor is a AC currence.

The light green wires come from MAP and the boost gauge wire is just connected to them.

The light brown goes from IAT to ECU and the light green goes upp to boost gauge. Didn't work that way :(
