Code 32 - EGR Diagnostic Failure

My truck was running fine. I cleaned the engine compartment because I am gearing up to relocate the battery and install and alky kit. Checked my DM because the truck was running a little rough and noticed a Code 32 - EGR Diagnostic Failure. Any ideas why this would be on? What / where should I check first?

Assuming you pressure washed the engine compartment (or even a garden hose):

Remove the distributor cap and dry the insides well. I spray a bit of wd40 in the cap afterwards as well. If you didn't blow off a vacuum line or the electrical connector to the EGR solenoid, the EGR system shouldn't have been affected. The EGR system uses MAP to determine EGR flow, if you are already running rough, the PCM may not be able to see a MAP increase. Easy stuff first.

It uses fuel delivery, and integrator change. A fairly common test strategy on OBDI non-feedback GM EGR systems.

I screwed that up. GM uses both MAP on EGR engagement and Fuel Trim change on disengement of EGR on non-OBDII vehicles. My alldata is broken and didn't verify in the manual before posting. Blanket apologies to all.

In my own defense, fuel change is still a function of the loss/increase of MAP as the EGR is turned off/on. Watching the MAP change regardless of fuel integrator allows to test EGR function without worrying about the O2 sensor response time, which is pretty critical on the Fuel trim change strategy and pretty poor on the non heated O2 sensors of the early GMs. Poor O2 response can hide and potentially have a technician performing an incorrect diagnosis and changing a properly functioning part. Just my :2cents:
