Driving the truck today after fresh tune-up , taylors, UR6's new conrad cap+rotors......check engine light comes on and even under light acceleration truck bogged BAD. Shut it off and started again, check engine light again after a few miles ran ok though.

Pulled a code 42....syty.org says

Code 42 Electronic Spark Timing (EST) Circuit

I searched the old list archives but only found one post about this, anyone have a clue ?

Thanks

drop the ECM and make sure the MeMcal is seated all the way.

Find the knock sensor on the back of the drivers side head (past the coil and way down in there) and verify it is plugged in. (Dark blue wire)
You may want to run it on a scantool and see if you are getting knock, then determine if you should replace the sensor itself.

I had a code 42 last fall. After trying many things I replaced the Distributer and never got code again. truck was a lot better for awhile, having different trouble now, but never had code 42 again.

One other thing, make sure the timing connector didn't come apart... you know the one on the right side, upper floor board, the one that you need to disconnect to set the timing and reconnect when done..... loose connection at distributor can also cause this....

This is EST not ESC.... trust me... Hiros truck has this problem..it comes and goes.... I just never got around to replacing the distributor.... I thought it wa ESC too..but I looked at the manual...and realised its actually the distributor...

Only thing I've had a chance to check so far is the connector you disconnect to set the timing, that is connected ok.(had to do starter today).

Did pull both ECM fuses, etc today, noticed i get tach flutter at cruise and truck bucks for a split sec about every 10 mins, no check engine light though......

ignition module has been replaced less than 1 yr ago.

In case anyone searched and found this thread, thought I'd post the fix, ign module seems to have done the trick ;)
