Cold Air Kit Finally - Stock Battery Location !!!

well, i'm not sure what took us so long to develop a cold air kit for stockish trucks with stock battery location, but here ya go. The kit will also work with upgraded turbos and 3" cobra elbows.

Real nice piece. Not meaning to be negative in any way, but has ANYONE ever checked underhood temps in different places while the vehicle is running. Both while in motion down the road (at different speeds would be really cool - no pun intended) and while sitting in traffic. Notation of outside temps would be a bonus to the data.

To the topic at hand, as usual, a nicely fabricated piece from Mike and crew.

I doubt it. The main consern is just getting air into the turbo, not how close to ambient the temperature is. It gets heated up to several hundred degrees anyways :)

Without grafting a scoop into the fender or hood, there is only one area you can pull fresh air from and that is through the fender openings. I think the consensus of what makes the most power is consistent with what we have provided.. A large unobstructed filter, near a fresh air source.

If you are willing to relocate the battery, etc then you have several other options but IMHO none of them are going to be significantly better or worse.

Can't disagree with that Mike. My mom always says I think too much.

Looks good Mike. Could I ask a couple of questions please.
Does it work, fit or breath any better with the 3" Cobra elbow rather than the stock orange hose?
Can it be used without the inner fender being fitted.
I realise you are saying this is for 'stockish' trucks, but do you know the impact of fit with any of the commonly available Alky injection set ups including the one RPM offers? I'm just trying to mentally adjust my game plan. Looks good! Any thoughts on an air box to go with it? Not meant as a critisism in any way - Maybe an optional extra? Many thanks for the continued support of our hobby. Also, any thoughts on a 3" downpipe yet for a stockish truck? It would compliment my RPM 3" Cat back. :) Thanks

Deng, wish that came out years ago...

Interested to know how is this design is coming along...

>We are currently working on a different battery kit (mounting in stock location) with an integrated cold air kit. This in currently under development so it will be a few weeks.<

IMO, It makes a huge difference whether the intake draws in underhood air vs fender well air. I had an open filter located in the battery area, and was getting a lot of knock retard. I enclosed the filter to draw air from the fender only and my IAT's dropped considerably. The cooler the air you start with, means less work for your intercooler. There is no doubt in my mind that It IS worth it not to draw underhood air into the intake. I picked up .2's et alone, by enclosing the filter. It seemed like drivabliity improved also.

I agree 100%. I self constructed an A2A system last month with a similar concept, although the pic isn't the greatest. With a mock filter enclosure, IAT dropped from an average 74 to 67. Those header temps getting sucked into the filter reduce potential power. Regardless, nice work. I didn't want to use silicone connectors but without a mandrel bender, my option was nill.

Re: Cold Air Kit Finally - Stock Battery Location !!!

I think the main objective is to give people an alternative to the (weak) factory crossover. I did a very similar DIY intake on my Ty, however my filter fit between/over the battery and the stock coolant bottle. This looks much nicer IMO

in my opinion it wasn't worth trying to fabricate an enclosure for this particular kit.

We are going to build a sealed kit with aftermarket and/or relocated battery setup similar to the ATR box here shortly.

While i can't disagree with the fact cold air is better then hot air, i have a hard time believing many of the claims that have been presented over the years. Without encountering significant costs and or drawbacks for daily driver applications, I think as long as you have a sufficient sized air filter placed near a fresh air source you are gonna be fine.

I forgot to say that the kit you designed really looks nice. A lot better than the old stock POS crossover tube setup. Also, I do appreciate your efforts to introduce improved SyTy products.

I don't want to get into an arguement over this, BUT, when you stand next to a heat source, one side of you is facing the heat and the other side is facing the cold, but your body feels more of the heat than the cold, right? The intake is going to ingest more of the hot air than cold. This is especially true for stock setups. I have a 9x4 K&N filter, so the size of my filter is not an issue. I do have witnessed and documented proof of what I say about et and knock improvements. Here is an example: I had to run 100 octane unleaded gas at 17 psi to get the same result in et without the enclosure as I got with the enclosure installed at 15 psi and 93 octane gas. The ONLY change was the filter enclosure, boost level, and gas octane. Of course the decision is your's, but I think It would take you all of 30 minutes to design an enclosure for the kit or people can buy your kit and make their own enclosure. I will always recommend controling underhood temps. Just my opinion and I'm sticking to it. haha. :rotf:

Just sell the kit with a turbo blanket so everyone can be happy...

It looks great! It's refreshing to see research and developement of new products for a 20 year old discontinued truck with less than a few thousand units left in existence.

Hats off RPM:tup:

@ brassmonkey

while i can agree these trucks have a mind of their own, and more often that not leave you puzzled beyond belief, i would have to say your results are exaggerated. Not saying you are a liar and it didn't work for you, i'm just saying it is not normal to expect similar results. Regardless, our main focus is to provide a reasonably priced, well built and functioning air filter setup, whether you have a cracked plastic crossover tube, or just want something less restrictive and want to hear the turbo breathe. I suppose we can always add a shield/cover as an option, but i have some other things on my to-do list to tackle first.

I am just trying to make a point that cooler air is BETTER, and you listed the product as COLD air kit.

Have to disagree. Removing my fender and closing off all of the openings to the engine compartment including the ones you don't see behind the A/C box so air can only come in from down below dropped my IAT temps 19 degrees. I enclosed the new air filter and am taking in air from a fender vent but on another truck we only take in the air from the small opening at the bottom of the leading edge of the fender and the temp drop was the same. Truck was Diacom'ed for over 2000 miles and was very consistent on the temp drop.

We also tested the KB and ATR air filter relocate boxes and they didn't drop temps. The hot air just comes in from the engine compartment through the holes on the inside of the fender. The KB kit blocks off the two visible openings but not the ones you can't see by the A/C box.

HUH? Are you getting intake air from under the hood or not? That is the point I am trying to make. Cold air does not come from under the hood.

Mike,

Very nice piece, how will this work for the ALKY control users? Do you have a larger overflow tank? Should I be reaching out to Julio to options?

Thanks!
