crapping out after freeway drive

This afternoon I drove to a BBQ. When I got there, I let the truck idle while we unloaded everything. The truck died. I had to pull the fuel pump relay, crank the engine, re install the relay and presto. It started right up and I was able to park it in a spot. (If I don't follow this sequence it will not start. It will only crank over).

Now fast forward 4 hours.

On the drive home it did well on the Freeway. But as soon as I exited the Truck died. Again I had to pull the fuel pump relay, crank the engine, re install the relay and presto. It started right up. This happened about 12 more times on the way home (5 miles). At every red light it would die. :(

This is the 3rd time this has happened to me. It only seams to happen after freeway drives over 45 minutes.

I'm stumped. Could this be a bad catalytic converter or a bad fuel injector?

I know I posted up on this before. But I couldn't find it and I am not sure on how to find my previous posts in my user cp.

Re: crapping out after freeway drive

A: Is the oil pressure switch working correctly. To test, have truck running. Un-plug fuel pump relay. Engine keeps running = oil pressure switch OK. Engine dies = oil pressure switch bad.

B: If oil pressure switch is good, it's probably the fuel pump, or wiring to the fuel pump. Particularly the in-tank connector at the top of the tank.

C: If oil pressure switch is bad, then the fuel pump relay is probably also bad.

But the way I read this, the only thing you touch is the fuel pump relay. While I have no idea why cranking with the pump disabled causes it to re-start, it's still associated with the pump, IMO.

The fuel pump in my Corvette would make it stall at idle, or when I shoved the clutch in to shift. I'd let the clutch out, and it would fire right back up. I replaced the pump, and it's been fine for 7 years since.

I would be suspicious of the pump, or wiring for the pump.

Re: crapping out after freeway drive

I stated the truck.
pulled the fuel pump relay and the truck died after 2 seconds.

must be the oil pressure switch.

Thanks Dave.

Re: crapping out after freeway drive

Thank You Dave.

I just got a new oil pressure switch from Kragen O'reilly auto parts.
The first one I bought didn't fit (Sy p/n S4087) because the wires will not reach the switch without the angled brass fitting (or a 6" wire adapter, if anyone makes one). So I bought the one for the Ty.
Master Pro part number is 2-8165.

After reading several post on how to remove the switch. I decided that I was going to try a different approach. I did not want to remove the distributor or the driver side valve cover.
so this is what I did.

It took me about 15min to change out the switch (it took me another 15min to drive back to the store to buy a brass barrol after I slipped and broke the boost gauge tube at the connector).
I removed plug wires 1,2 & 3 from the cap.
I disconnected two connectors. 1 to the bottom of the distributor and the other to the oil sensor.
Then I used a 1-1/16 open end wrench (cut to 3" length) to remove the sensor (tight fit).
Then I used a 7/8 socket on a 12" extension to remove the angled brass fitting.

After cleaning everything and applying some high temp thread locker I put it back together the same way I took it apart.

Re: crapping out after freeway drive

I bet Kragen has there parts mixed up.
On the Sy part that they gave me the thread was too small to fit into the 90 deg. brass adapter. But the Ty part fit perfect.
Here is two pic's of what I have.

Sorry I didn't get any pics yesterday. It was raining on me.

Re: crapping out after freeway drive

I have never seen this set-up on any Syclone. Only on TBI 4.3 engines which are "VIN Z". Is it possible Kragen gave you the sender based on the VIN, and it was incorrect because a Syclone is not really a VIN Z TBI?

Hope its fixed.

I will now go check the numbers on my engine. ????

.... Now the truck dies all the time. It starts right back up. It acts like someone fliped a light switch... Dead. Sometimes it catches itself and stays running for a little longer but still dies. Im going to try another oil switch. Im crossing my fingers.

Can you put a fp gage on it to verify fuel pressure? No since in guessing. Been there, done that!

Re: crapping out after freeway drive

mattw, fuel pressure gauge reads right around 3/4

TY162, Ill check the fuel pressure in the morning.

Before, it would just die. Now it acts like a IAC. here is a video after I finally made it home today.

Re: crapping out after freeway drive

bundie, It was not reading a code. The red light on the dash was from the e-brake.

This morning I went out, started it up and took it for another drive. About 7 minutes into the drive it had a hiccup and around 10 minutes it died the first time.It died 4 more times after that. So I drove it home. and then......HAPPY TURKEY DAY. When it rains it pours.
The brake pedal hit the floor and the brake light turned on. Today is my favorite SyTy day of all time.
1st thing I did was check around the wheels for a leaky wheel cylinder then I opened the hood to find the brake fluid full. ????????????????????????????
In an attempt to reset the light I pulled both ECU fuse's and disconnected the battery. Why, I don't know. So I then put the fuses back in, connected the battery, pumped the brakes and started it right up. Then a second light. The ABS and the BRAKE light where on, But I now had brake pedal. So I took it for a good 30 minute drive and to my surprise. Nothing. Except for the ABS and the BREAK light being on it ran great with no stalling.

I think my brake light issue is the ABS went out. As far as the new stalling problem, I don't know . Maybe... whatever it was, was reset by disconnecting the battery and the fuses.

Sounds like your fuel pump is getting warm after a few min. & it is taking A carp. I bet is is the fuel pump.

Re: crapping out after freeway drive

OK...
I found an old post about ABS troubleshooting and got the ABS and the brake light to turn off. Then I took it for another short drive. It had a couple of slight hiccups. But not enough to kill the Sy.

1madgumby, My Fuel Pressure looks good but I will check the pump tomorrow. Thanks.

Re: crapping out after freeway drive

Back to the drawing board. Today I was driving home in the heat and it died again.
Had to call AAA.
photo13.jpg

I have fixed a couple of issues that needed to be addressed.
1st thing I fixed was that damn purple wire. I used DaveP's relay method.
2nd I replaced the starter. Now after it dies I can at least try to start it back up without climbing underneath and whacking it.

I was able to plug in TP and get some info.
before it dies the PLX WB gauge goes full air.

With out having my SyTy toolbox handy. I could not do any real tests.
but I did manage to take a crappy cell phone video.

I think the FP if working. I also think that I'm getting spark.
I'm thinking that my problem is the the ignition module.

What do you think?

If the wideband is showing exremely lean(full air), I'd start with fueling issues. What is 3/4 on the gauge? Can you give us some numbers to go by? 42 psi at idle? Does psi go up with RPM?

Re: crapping out after freeway drive

Jason my truck gave me the same problem 2 weeks ago, my solution was rather simple. I just stop driving it.

Kidding aside i hope you get that gremlin fixed man.

Re: crapping out after freeway drive

So today I started it up and went for a drive.
During this drive my gauges read about the same....
AF 14.6
IDLE @ 800. (kinda low, but that was from me playing with the idle to get it to pass smog test)
OP @ 3/4 on dash gauge
WT a little above 1st line on dash gauge

The only change I found was on the FP gauge.

This is what I found out.

at key on...
FP 50lbs

at idle
FP 42lbs

key off
FP stayed at 50lbs. I let it sit for 10 min before i continued the test.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
AFTER 10 MINUTES OF DRIVING...

at idle, in drive
FP 42lbs

at a steady acceleration
FP 46lbs

at 5lbs of boost
FP 48 to 50lbs

at 10lbs of boost
FP 52 to 54lbs
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

AFTER 35 MINUTES OF DRIVING...

at idle, in drive
FP 42lbs

at a steady acceleration
FP 46lbs

at 5lbs of boost
FP 46lbs

at 10lbs of boost
FP 48lbs
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
AFTER 40 MINUTES OF DRIVING...

at idle, in drive
FP 41lbs

at a steady acceleration
FP 43lbs

at 5lbs of boost
FP 40lbs

at 10lbs of boost
FP 36lbs

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
AFTER 45 MINUTES OF DRIVING...

At an idle I noticed the FP started to drop. I was half a block from home. I pulled in the driveway with FP at 30lbs at idle, Put it in park and FP started decreasing faster from 30 to about 12lbs when it died.

HAPPY I MADE IT HOME. :)
