Well I was talking to my friend the other day that i haven't talked to in a good couple of years. We got on the subject of cars and dealer's license came up. I have never heard of it before so he explained it in a nut shell and i looked it up when i got home. He told me this story about how his brother-in-law was at a car auction and saw a WRX with 2 bullet holes in the back door go for $69. He said everything else was mechanically sound on it. I don't really believe it but i'm not sure about car auctions and stuff. The catch to buying this was you had to have a dealer's license. I'm not really sure about them so could this be true? And wouldn't a lot of people be getting them if you could get a nice car for that cheap then sell it for $10k?

Don't believe that story, I've been in the car business most of my life, been to every dealer auction in philly tristate area including NADE in bordentown. There are no cheap newer cars like that, the myth of dealers buying cars for 200 and selling them for 10,000 is Bull. Its very expensive to obtain a dealer license, you need a zoned lot, handicap accessable ofiice and bathroom, signs, and insurance is a killer-we are a small lot with about 7 dealer tags and insurance(liability only) is over 10,000 a year. People that think you can just get the license and sell them have no idea how much you really need to start a used lot.

You said it, It is not easy to get a dealers license. I just went through all of it to get a salvage license, and a used car dealer license. It is not easy, nor cheap. Zoning approval was the biggest hurdle.

its definitely true i got two of them for that price and they gave me the third for free... just joking i got a transport company and go to auctions all over the country and have never seen a deal even close to that. just think about how auctions work probably 200 to 2000 dealers bidding on cars and a wrx pulls up to the block the bidding probably started at 10 or 12k then lets say it goes up to 15k and thats the highest bid if the dealer that sent the car to the auction has 18k in the car he wont sell it he will tell the auction what he needs and the auction will notify the high bidder and he will either pass or make a counter offer. although i have been to a police auction with one of my dealers and they sell the cars to the highest bid but still so many dealers were their that there were no super steals

Yeah i was kind of skeptical about that story. Thanks for clearing it all up for me. :tup: i knew it was expensive but i didn't know you had to go through all that stuff. sounds tedious. i'd still like to check out an auction. that'd be fun to go to.

If you find a buddy that has an extra nametag, you can be someone else for a day and tag along to check out the auctions.

I go with a buddy of mine to Adesa sometimes, not to bid or anything, just to catch the thrill. Its an experience and fun to see what people will actually pay for some cars and trucks.

Well, I know a person with a dealership license, and goes to car auctions and gets cars, fixes them up, then sells them around town. I have seen a perfectly fine buick riviera, other than the key ignition had been ripped off (stolen) go for $650, but, I didn't think you had to have a dealership license to buy cars at auctions. I think he is full of shit about that, but do believe that you CAN find cars cheap at those auctions, but not $69. :tdown:

you definately can get good deals at auctions, but they definately wont be dealer auctions... police auctions or huge car auctions that are held monthly are your best bet. i've gotten a number cars for 50 bucks at auction

You can't even get a $50 auction car really anymore, anything is worth at least $200 in just scrap. At the public auctions you can get them for 50-100 but thats like a '85 Plymouth K car rotted out with about 200k on it-LOL

i've been getting real lucky, i've gotten a 1991 Ford F-150 with a 302 for 5 bucks and turn around sold it for 500
