you can use a regular S series front diff but you must make sure to get the same ratio and you must swap the passenger side axle and axle tube. really easy stuff

get the whole s10 assembly (3.42 ratio for stock) and swap the pass side axle tube over from your old diff...

jwaller.. is the input flange the same? i dont recall...

no the input flang is prob different too..but it depends on the year. they ran several differnt styles.some like ours and some were like the rear with just u joints.

Ok i located a differential outta 4x4 s-10 in Ny they want $450 shipped with 3 month warrenty. All i have to do is swap the mounting flange as long as my axle shaft is okay right. if i need the shaft then i need one from the pass. side of a van(astro). I am correct right. please reply here tonight or my aim is ty0040

it's clunking. shop said thats what it was. can't be anything else except for the rear end and its not that. I have new tranny, t-case, driveshafts, and now gonna be new front diff.

No shit, Brian

The reason why I was asking - if it is a ring & pinion it will be cheaper and less timly solution then swapping the whole diff. I guess all the parts there are replaceable - seems like a lot of work to do the whole diff. But, anyway......what is to say the front diff you get isn't going to have the same issue. I would try to take it to a driveline shop and have 'em check it. But, that is just me. Have fun.

well they said it was cheaper to buy a used one than try to rebuild it. I can check out the replacement but it should be okay i will also buy one that has atleast a 30 day warrenty. I will make sure it works within a couple of days. If it can handle the first couple days of driving AWD the first time since i bought it it will be ok.

Well it looks like the yoke is different at the very least.. between the s10 4x4 and the syclone.. will have to swap... the axle tube assembly (#'s 1-7) is the same as used on the bravada for the same years.. and supposedly the astrovan as well... The actual center section housing and internals are the same as an s10 4x4 with a 3.42 ratio.

Let me get this straight: If I want lower gearing, like say I wanna swap out my rear end for that of a '97 Trans Am so I get rear discs, and posi, and this thing has 4:11 gears in it, and I have 3:73 gears now right? Then all I need to do is find another set of 4:11 limited slip that fit an S-10 rear end, and swap out the front for an S-10 4X4 that has that bigger front set up? Wat's tha deal? Cuz I have a '97 rear end with all the breaks in tact and I wanna slap it on!

I cannot imagine why you would want to go to a 3.73 or 4.11 gear in a sy/ty... these engines like the lower (numeric) gears.

Syty come stock with 3.42:1 ratio. Not 3.73. Some regular s-10 models have 3.60 gearing. Don't know why, just saw it on the build slips.
