Yes there is a potential problem there. It's not recommended to use both self aligning rocker arms and pushrod guide plates together as it will often result in either munched pushrods or broken rocker tips (if using roller rockers) along with accelerated valve guide wear.

If you don't believe me call up crane, crower or one of the other reputable roller rocker/cam/valvetrain companies and ask them for their advise/input. Most will even state on their website, catalog or the instructions that come with self-aligning rockers that self-aligning rocker arms should not be used in conjunction with pushrod guide plates. I hate when that happens!

I see a rocker arm stud backed out of the threads and not holding the guide plate down on the bottom pic.......

When they back out that way the valves don't open very much......

Is that a figment of my demagination? or is that the problem?

Do I get a prize?

I don't think that rocker post has backed out but it does kind of look like it did.

Pull the rockers & pushrods and see if they show wear.
Hopefully there aren't metal shavings in your motor yet like a few folks have found out way too late.

So what made you pull the valve covers on such a fresh motor?

Actually, that center guideplate is 2 pieces. What you are seeing, I believe, is the clearance on the side that allows you to align the 2 pieces.

IMO I would pull the rockers and push rods to check them out. If they arent scuffed from the guide plates being there then reinstall the push rods and chuck the self aligning rockers on the shelf. Get yourself some non self aligning rockers to go back on there. Old school small block chevy/4.3s use non self aligning rockers if you dont wanna do the rollers at this time.

You could, however, use the aligning rockers by removing the guide plates IF the heads are drilled deep enough to run the studs down tight without em AND if the rocker studs are long enough to still allow the rocker adjusting nut to do its thing once the valves are lashed.

If the heads arents tapped deep enough then you could cut the push rod "guide" portion of the guide plates off and just use whats left as a spacer between the studs and head. Cheap but a PIA to do. Dont even attempt cutting them with a hacksaw. You'll need a chop saw or air cut off disc to even make a dent in em. BTDT.

Looks to me like the pushrod holes are REAL close to the slots in the heads going by the pics. I would be concearned with them rubbing if you go with 1.6s. Only prob is, to open em up will require pulling the intake to put rags/whatever in the lifter valley to keep out the metal shavings. In a nut shell the slots can be opened up with the heads on the eng IMO but its a PIA to do.

If it was my eng Id check out the push rods like was mentioned. If they are ok then reinstall them. Remove self aligning rockers and install a non self aligning type of 1.5 ratio. Adjust valve lash. Put the eng back togeather and derby the wee outta it. No fuss no muss.

So for clarity... who did this motor?

Also when I used the Vortec heads I had the heads milled so that the guide plates could be used. Also had the stock stud holes drilled and tapped for larger studs.. I am using some rockers that are way over kill but are very nice.

One other point is that you have to be sure to use the correct pushrods with guide plates. They are not the same... maybe this is where the person who was talking about metal was suggesting it would come from.

If this is someone that claims to be an "engine builder" I would be very leary of putting a lot boost to the motor if they don't even know the difference between self aligning and non-self aligning rockers.

I have very similar on my camaro and LOVE THEM.

of course it has solid lift, non roller cam makes a lot of lifter noise. But hey, it sounds cook to gearheads anyways.

They should work, but make damn sure the slots in the heads, where the pushrods run through them, have enough clearance around the pushrods... Summit/jegs sells a drill/clearance tool for drilling the slots out to clear. I think someone pointed this out earlier... You may encounter problems with the valvecover though.... (clearance).

well im a big dummy.
the rockers in the picture were aftermarket cast NON-self-aligning.
so i guess i was worried about nothing, but at least i got some nice 1.6 rollers in the process.
