engine not starting

Ok so I got my truck all back together and now iam not getting power my motor is ground to the frame and the firewall and on my batt + I only have the biggest wire hooked up the way it was when I bought the truck.

Does anyone know what it could be. The only way iam getting power is when I run a jumper wire from batt + over to the alt but still the starter doesn't want to work.

I need this truck running bodywork and painted by may 20th

Re: engine not starting

There is a wire that goes from the batt to the back of the alternator, you left it out somehow. It could also be at your starter. It is kind of hard to say where the wire is with knowing how you have things hooked up. The big wire coming off of the battery should go to your starter. On the back of the alternator is a 10 or 12 gauge wire that goes along the fuel rail and behind the intake. Ours runs the same way and it leads along the firewall around the AC/Heater box and in to the fender on the passenger side. Find the wire on the alternator (should not have a fusible link is how you know it is it) and follow it. Also, check your fusible links and make sure they are ok, chances are that they are fine since you have power by running a jumper.

Re: engine not starting

The truck gets its power off the alternator post via the battery... With out a "jumper" wire from the Alt post to the battery (+) you will not have any power supply to the truck and the alt can't charge the battery...

Jumper wire is temp to just see if everything was workin n to see and figure out the problem its not staying on lol

Re: engine not starting

ok this is what i got so far

2-1-0 red fusible link from alt. goes to intercooler relay on firewall 2nd relay on middle of firewall

2-3-0 red from alt. goes to fuse box and one also goes to power junction on firewall

2-5-0 blk/red goes from alt. to starter solenoid

i have my ground from head to frame and head to firewall on pass side then the original grounds on back of drivers head

am i missing anything

Re: engine not starting

You're missing a 10ga wire from alt to battery (+)...

Battery (+) should be a 4ga to the starter solenoid and 10ga to the alternator post, Battery (-) should be a 4 gauge to the back of the head, a 10ga to the radiator support.

The only wires to the starter should be a 10ga purple wire to the small post on solenoid, and a 4ga to the large post on the solenoid. You Could wire the alt to the large post on the starter solenoid instead of directly to Battery (+) terminal...

Re: engine not starting

i might just run a new 10ga from the alt to batt + then

and run a new batt - to the rad support

and for the starter i have a purple well now green that old owner switched, and the 4ga from the starter to batt +

Re: engine not starting

The starter is wired correctly but you need a wire from the Alt to the battery (+) in order to complete the circuit and power the charging system. You can either run the Alt wire directly to the battery, or to the large post on the starter solenoid. The truck gets its power off the Alt post and the only way to get power to the Alt post is via the battery (+).

Re: engine not starting

ok i will run it tomm morning i have no 10 ga wire here that i kno of.

Re: engine not starting

loli forgot u said something about it.

now my damn starter is just whinning the gears come out but i think with the way it spins its not engaging i can spin it counterclock wise easy as hell and clock wise is little harder to spin

Re: engine not starting

So let me get this straight. Battery has been relocated. pos runs from battery to starter, then to altinator. Battery ground goes to frame. Then you have a ground from the engine to the fram and a ground from the frame to the firewall. You are also gonna need one from the frame to the front radiator support. If you can ground the motor from the front drivers side intake. You will see 2 wires allready grounded there. Those wires are a crucial ground for the truck to run right so run a ground wire from there to the frame.

Check your battery voltage and your cranking amps. Your battery might be shot if the starter is sluggishly whining. It might not have enough cranking amps left in it.:2cents:

Re: engine not starting

charging the battery now i had it on charge for a day n half so the batt should be fine. and iam adding the extra grounds.

anything else that could be making the starter just whine and not engage

Re: engine not starting

ok well we messed with the distributor and tried to get the timing right and only thing we got was it to back fire and smoke a little and still not starting.

anyone know what could be going on
