Frame off resto

Who has done a full frame off bumper to bumper restoration. Specifically a highly detailed one where everything is stripped and repainted - all the chassis pieces, leaf springs, drive shaft, bumper brackets ect... I thought someone did a show quality Sy but can't remember who.

Re: Frame off resto

Mine is almost down to bare frame because I want to have the frame powdercoated. I am not making a show truck though.

It sucks, and I am starting on number 2 here in a couple of weeks. But to answer your question I guess I have. lol

Re: Frame off resto

Pretty sure Roberts sy was damn near a frame off.

I'm not frame off, but I've been coating most of the underside, rear end, leaf springs, drive shaft, frame rails from the back bumper to under the cab, under side of the bed, fuel tank, and front frame with all the suspension and steering in POR-15.

Honestly, pulling the body would make it very easy but I don't have the area/equipment to do it right.

I've been planning on it since I tore my Ty apart 4 years ago. Starting to work on it again. Hopefully have the body off in the next few months.

Re: Frame off resto

I did , any specific questions you have ? I had everything sand blasted and then used por 15 on the frame and suspension parts .

Re: Frame off resto

Hi Mike (and everyone else),
Thanks for the pics. I was wondering what was found for different colors on different parts and as far as black parts, if it appeared that there were different percentages of gloss on different parts. I have done a few late 60's / early 70's GM cars and I have all that info (as many as 5 different percentages of gloss black under the hood on the same car). Was wondering what I was going to find on my Sy (and eventually a Ty I am chasing).

Mike, in the photo of the rear section of the frame, it appears that the frame, leaf springs and axle tubes all have a different percentage of gloss and the center section is silver/gray (it all looks nice btw). Is it photo angles or are there different colors and did you top coat the POR15 with anything. I know POR can be top coated as, by itself, does not have any UV protection (not that you need it on a frame) but I am curious.

Anyone with any specific info? Replies are appreciated and thank you in advance.

Re: Frame off resto

I did use 3 diff por15 products on it all . The frame is the chassis coat black and i used gloss black on all the front and rear suspension parts . I had some leftover por 15 high temp silver/grey from when i did my manifolds . I wanted to jazz up the rear axle some so i used it up on the middle section.

Re: Frame off resto

Howd the silver por work out on those manifolds Mike? Did it ever start to crack or anything after use.. I didn't know how hot it can get, that's why I haven't put it on any of the engine parts yet.

I thought about something similar on the rear. The center section black, and the tubes silver. But I'm still iffy about it and haven't done it yet.

Re: Frame off resto

It turned out decent . No cracks or anthing .
If i recall , it was thicker than the black so i couldnt spray it and used a brush to apply it . I did just one coat and was supposed to heat cycle them once and apply another coat . I never got around to taking them back off until i sold them when these headers came up for sale . If i do anymore coatings in the future i plan to do multiple coats .

Yeah, I've only got one cost on most of the stuff, its on thick with a brush. I didn't see the point to do a few coats under the bed. Ill keep that in mind though

Re: Frame off resto

When I think of "frame off restoration", I think the person is restoring the vehicle to factory using the same colors, fasteners, etc. Is pulling the body off and simply repainting everything also considered a frame off?

The word for what you describe is 'concours'. This is a restoration to factory-exact specifications. Frame-off simply means the body was taken off the frame during the restoration (which can be a pretty good barometer of how thorough the restoration was).

Often a good 'frame off' restoration uses materials which are superior to those available when the vehicle was first built. This is fine (even superior if you want to drive the restored vehicle and have the thing hold up to use) but will cause points to be deducted on a 'concours' judging.

Re: Frame off resto

Not sure if you meant me but my truck is far from a simple pull and paint .I tore down every thing down to just a bare frame and just piles of parts . I replaced all that was replaceable with new parts and everything else was upgraded . Be it motor , tranny , front end , rear end ,suspension bushings, brakes , nuts and bolts , steering parts ,all hoses to ss braided ,all weatherstripping, body cab mounts, etc. etc .

While true its not back to 100%oem to me its now better than brand new .IMO this is how they should have came .lol

Actually, I believe what you are describing is called "restomodding". A restoration brings the car back to factory specs, and restomodding brings some parts of the car back to original, and others updated.

Re: Frame off resto

I'm pretty sure Ken is in the middle of doing a complete rebuild of a Sy, although his is not back to factory. I remember Dig looking for factory specific stuff for his rebuild.

Re: Frame off resto

Id bet money all trucks being restored are changed in one way or another .

They dont make our oem tires anymore , no one is doing new single stage paintjobs , i could keep going on and on.
