Re: front diff question.
I'm trying to be able to switch from AWD to 2WD. I thought the AWD front differential would allow this and stop the hopping you get with 4WD front Diff. on pavement.
You have a fundamental misunderstanding of what the components in the systems due, and how they operate. Not criticizing, just observing, we were all here once. Hopefully this will clear up your intuition.
In the Sy/Ty AWD system the front diff is always engaged, and the transfer case is always engaged. Within the Sy/Ty/bravada case there is a viscous coupler that allows the needed slip between the front wheels, and the rear as they travel different distances around a curve/turn.
In a regular S-Series 4WD system, both the transfer case, and the front differential are "selectable". They can be engaged or disengaged. The front diff "disengages" by means of disconnecting the right front axle shaft (within the diff housing) from the differential.
The setup you want is the 4WD S-series front diff housing, and the Sy/Ty transfer case. This allows the truck to be run as an AWD vehicle when the front diff is engaged, and a 2wd when the front diff is disengaged. It also retains the center viscous clutch within the transfer case that prevents the "hopping" you get in a 4WD system during a turn on dry pavement.
Hopefully that makes some sense, and is a complete enough description to get you "moving forward" with your plans. (pun intended)
