Front drive axles

After reading stories about rebuilt front drive CV axles from NAPA and Autozone I'm a little nervous about installing these rebuilt parts considering how much work is involved in doing so. Does anyone have a recommendation where to buy heavy duty high horsepower axle replacements? I'm currently into a engine/transmission upgrade. Bowtie block, vortecs , 412 cam, 50# ultimate, wideband O2.

Re: Front drive axles

you might check the four wheel drive guys out, they might have done something with strengthening them

Re: Front drive axles

swapping cv axels can be done in about 20 min if you got it together. go to autozone and get one cheap. lifetime warrenty, make sure you pull the sticker off the inside flange so the boot can breath.

Re: Front drive axles

It might be a 20 min job if you have high torque air tools. I couldn't break the left axle nut loose with a 1 foot cheater on a 1/2 drive breaker bar. I had to go out and buy a 625 ft/lb impact wrench and the nut came off in 5 seconds.

Re: Front drive axles

If you have a bigger brother, then the axle nuts will come off easy. My bro actually twisted the 1/2" bit off of my craftsman breaker bar by pulling up on the bar without a cheater bar. He was actually starting to lift up the truck when the bar broke. Thank god they have a warranty b/c i'd hate to buy another. Yeah goto the 'Zone.

Re: Front drive axles

i bought mine at o'reileys and they hed a lifetime replacement. The were 60 bucks each. They took about a day to change them out. Prolly because i didnt have the right tools for the job and was running all over town. First thing i did was thake off the brake caliper and rotor. them i had to go to 'zone and rent a 36mm (i think) spindle socket. took that off then worked on the upper and lower ball joints. rented a pickle fork and went at it. after emoveing them, i go to the 8ish bolts holding thcv axles to the half shaft. after i took that off it slide right out. then i just reversed the operation to put the new one on. but remember, if you bust the ball joint boots, get new ones.
sorry for the long post.

Re: Front drive axles

i had a helluva time trying to get the axle nut off, i even tried hitting the socket wrench with a mallot trying to break it loose haha... i ending up putting the jack under the wrench and just jacking it up till the nut broke loose... probably not the safest or the smartest approach, but it worked.
