Front Driveshaft

I've joined the break your front driveshaft club.... Nothing broke though I was only going 15mph when it went. Lucky me!

Ok, suggestions, with a small budget in mind.

oh and how long can i drive with it off in 2wd around my little town?

in my previous Ty, I had 2 situations where I had to run it in 2WD mode. Probably put ~200+ miles on it each time. No problems.

I drove probably 1000 miles on 2wd without any problems while I was waiting for my propshaft to be made (had to make a trip to Vegas).

I went to a local driveshaft shop and they made me one for about $170, much beefier than stock, double U-joints

ok thanks, thats what I wanted to know. I'm going to take it to a local shop (i have a good friend there) to do fluid in rear/front/transfercase, etc, filter in tranny, drifeshaft, and a look over the suspension from front to back.

Well the truck seems to be in good condition underneith, except a bad ball joint and poor alignment. I'll have that fixed soon.


Where should I pick up a driveshaft around here? Anything specific I should know about? When I buy one will it come with the ujoints or do I have to buy those seperetly?

I'm not sure about the first part of your question. I'd just call around to driveshaft shops and see if they can make them for you. Mine came complete ready to go in, which yours should as well. When you find a driveshaft shop that will do it for you, just take your original in with you and make sure they can replicate it accurately.

There is one thing I remembered mentioning to him was the lip on the front of the shaft, where you bolt it to the front diff. I remember having to point that out to make sure they got that the right size, where people have had problems with that in the past.

Hah, a local shop said they wanted 450 to rebuild it. I'll have to call around and find someone that will do it cheap, or have someone out of state where you guys have gotten them before, make me one and ship it.

Buy the Gilbert and be done. Worse case in a pinch buy a used one, and know it is a timebomb.

a 2x4 some duct tape and a piece of angle iron and you my friend will be all set.

I'll keep that in mind, its closer to what i'll pay but I'd still like to find something under 200. so that with shipping it stays around 200.

I would like to hear more from PPI Typhoon about the shop that built his.

I had a local driveshaft shop rebuild an old ATR shaft and it was only $186 with lifetime warrty.
LoL.
I blew the CV style joint twice and they told me not to bring it back anymore.

You usually get what you pay for, but a $200 or so rebuild is going to be no better than stock.
I have since bought the Gilbert as well, should have just done that the first time.

Detroit turbo also stocks the Gilbert shaft I believe so he could ship it out same day.

I have been waiting for a chance to publicly thank Gilbert Driveline for their product and servive. I know that you will like the Gilbert driveshaft. I broke two factory units and one builtup local product before I had my Gilbert installed two weeks ago. This unit appears to be bulletproof. As far as the cost goes, I feel that the $400 that I spent for the Gilbert and its installation is one of the best values that I have obtained in the over $27,000 that I have poured into repairs and upgrades to my four wheel drive money pit.
