Gas prices hit $3.50 in IA... what happened?

I know we have numerous gas crunch threads, but I couldnt believe it this morning. I usually pay attention to the news and whats goin on with the oil companies and all the gas problems, but can someone give me some info on how gas went up so fast?

For instance, I saw 3.50 - 3.60 across the city for 91-93 octane. Whats up with that? Is it just because summer is here?

Supposedly, another US refinery went belly up Thursday evening and requires extensive repairs so production has once again been stifled. On a good note, the price spike might keep some of the younger generation drivers off the road so we will have fewer obstacles to avoid and also drive down the high cost of performance vehicles. I'm watching the new Shelby GT500KR and Z07 with high hopes :).

It is supposedly all based on refinery production. A Velero refinery in Texas lost like 64,000 barrels of production a day. They get like 37 gallons of gas out of a barrel. That is roughly 2.4 million barrels a day lost. Still think it is a rip off.

I hear ya but the credit card bills for this months purchases haven't hit home yet. Anybody can use plastic at the pump for now....give it a few weeks until the cow comes home and reality hits their wallet and I bet you will see a marked reduction in the joy riders on the road. In our day, many live for today and give very little thought to the future consequences. Be patient....I think you'll find my prediction accurate in a short period of time.

You might be right, just talked to my wife and she works at the mall and told me she has never seen the mall so busy and noone buys anything. Maybe its already happening. I cant wait to see what happens when noone can afford gas anymore. Hope thier sky rocketing profits were worth it. For me, it's an extremely frustrating issue. My business revolves around gas and I love joy riding. W/O gas, life would really suck for me. Plus when Im feeling a little tired nothing beats a few shots of it you know  But really, there is NOTHING anyone can do about it and I dont think the government even can. A lot of people say when will they step in but I believe its their constitutional right to charge whatever the hell they want. And you know hteres a handfull of guys hanging out on the 200' yacht soaking it all up somewhere saying suckkeerrrsss!!!!. I would too I guess.

never forget we pay very little compared to others in the world. Go spend some time in Europe and you'll appreciate the point. You'll see few SUVs and more than 50% diesels. Hate to sound like a dick but it's about time we pay this much, ought to teach us to drive more sensible stuff...me included. Next car for our family will have a bluetech diesel for sure.

You guys make me feel better , 93 isnt even 3.50 yet .

Yup, you probably won't see a decrease in traffic volume until the price per gallon hits $4 a gallon for 87 if it does in fact go that high. I do a lot of driving and have never noticed a decrease in traffic volume during all the other price hikes that have happened in the past. People bitch about the price of gas but they don't let that prevent them from spending any less time behind the wheel IMHO.

AMEN! In Japan, gas is almost $6 a gallon. Think about how many vehicles would be for sale overnight if we had to pay that for gas here...

According to the NDOT, when fuel prices hit right at $3/gallon in mid 2006 and the US consumer went on a fury, the weekend pleasure traffic volume on the highways decreased by 37% whereas the work force traffic volume through the week remained steady. Do not ask me how they distinguish who is who because I have no clue but around here, I sure saw a notable decrease until people got over the shock and prices receded to around $2.25. As someone else already noted, we have two choices...pay up and drive OR clam up and sit. We are at the mercy of OPEC and the US fuel refinery hierarchy. Bottom line is we can whine all we want about what appears to be unreasonable pricing but as long as we keep shelling out the dough for the fuel and consuming the raw volume, no-one is gonna take heed. It's the beauty of capitalism :(.

I just know its never going to stop. The slower it increases, the longer the complaining and the more were going to pay. Everyone knows that if gas reaches $5 a gallon, were still going to pay. We cant walk 20 miles to work.

Its a supply and demand thing. Its out of control and no one can really control it. The less that people buy gas, the higher it goes. The more we buy gas, the higher it goes.

Its just frustrating. Im gettin a honda DD.

BTW I saw you mentioned a Talon. Im scared to finish my 97 GSX now and put it on the road or even race my 91 Talon in AutoX/NASA anymore. Nuts.

I dont get why everyone compares us to everywhere else. Im sure the prices are fairly relative and if not, we are here and they are there. I just dont see the value of the comparison as if we are supposed to be thankful for getting our asses destroyed with no vasoline. Anyway, it is frustrating, its annoying, and it makes me feel like like starting some kind of military revolution to stop it. But like Speedadict said, we'll keep paying it. There are some places, like New York city, where gas isnt that big of a deal as the public transportation is more htan suitable to get where youre going, its even better than driving half hte time, but in places like where I live, it just doesnt work, everything is far out of reach and the town/city is laid out in such a way that you need to drive. I suppose I could move out of my big townhome and move into a crap shack apartment that is conveniently located near Mc Donalds and a grocery store, then I wouldnt need to drive anymore right? Maybe if I worked hard enough, I could become the shift leader, or even a crew leader.Whatever saves gas though.

Because, in this country we are spoiled and use more energy than any other country in the world. We drive big, gas guzzling cars and rairly think twice about gas consumption when buying a new car. To us cup holders and the number thereof takes priority. Maybe people will start driving more sensible cars. Again, I am of the same mindset and as or more guilty than most. Why I need a 5.7 liter 400hp motor to drive 195lb me to work is somehow not right but a habit (like for the rest of us) hard to break.

Well, what is stopping you from moving somewhere else, its the American dream to be spoiled. People strive for it. Ofcourse it will probably be our un doing but if its that bad you should move to Europe I guess.

I am from Europe :) and don't care for it there. All in all, most of the rest of the wrld is much more conservative than us. I think gas hitting $4/gallon will change a lot of behaviors. .... including mine, hence the bluetech diesel next to replace the xc90.

I think Hydrogen is hte way to go for the future, I mean really, water for emissions? it doesnt get better than that. Diesel, gas, alcohol, its all polutant and expensive, you can make hydrogen in your garage. I wouldnt recommend it ofcourse but point being, how expensive could it ever really get? No raw fuels to refine or anythign like that, no shipping it overseas...
