Re: Has anyone upgraded the cluster lights?

I was planning on changing my instrument cluster bulbs to super white LEDs. I thought they were #74 bulbs, not #194? I already swapped every other bulb on the truck to PIAA super white or similar...they rock. The only thing left that looks dim and yellow now is the instrument cluster.

Re: Has anyone upgraded the cluster lights?

I was gona put in some 194 super whites I have but I was worried about heat and amp draw. Can anyone who has put them in tell me how many bulbs are in the cluster? I haven't taken mine out yet, I'd like to be prepared and make it a 15 minute project.
If the upgraded 194 are too hot then I will go LED!

Re: Has anyone upgraded the cluster lights?

I thought LED's didn't produce much if any heat at all?

Re: Has anyone upgraded the cluster lights?

LEDs don't produce much if any heat. What I have are regular superwhite 194's. These are a hot bulb, I have seen many a sidemarker light melt from the heat of these.

hmm.. I wouldn't risk them in the cluster then.. why risk damaging your $300 to $400 cluster assembly? if you go LED just don't use white.. it's not bright at all and this is coming from a person who likes his gauges kinda on the dimmer side

I don't know whatever your preference is. I just mentioned not to use the white led's because i've seen em on an s10 and they aren't anymuch brighter then the factory dime lighting..
I personally planned to go with red to match my red center console lighting but I haven't had time to f with the cluster nor do I really have any drive to right now wheater's getting pretty bad outside of late around here. The guy who I discussed this with before over pm which i've posted in this thread had pics of his vdo boost gauge and autometer temp gauges done with blue led which looked cool.

Re: Has anyone upgraded the cluster lights?

Right this moment I want them to be brighter so I can actually see them while driving at night.

Re: Has anyone upgraded the cluster lights?

Super white LEDs actually look slightly blue...but not that cheesy ricer blue. I have them all over my truck, including the Autometer gauges and they are beautiful. They emit zero heat, compared to the filament bulbs. The only thing left to do is my dash cluster and HVAC controls. You can buy them here:

Get the multi-LED's because they disperse light much better than singles. If anyone has upgraded their cluster with brighter bulbs and/or LED's, please post pics.

X2. I need to see what kind of difference they make in the cluster!

Re: Has anyone upgraded the cluster lights?

ok so i'm resurrecting this thread...

and after rereading everything, the conclusion is that the white LEDs are not bright enough... so my question now is what about those cheap ass LED flashlights? those are pretty damn bright, and why cant a bulb like that be used? different voltage? is the 12v application just not puttin out enough juice to power a bulb like that?

i'm gonna rip the dash apart this weekend to install some white gauge faces, i figure while im in there i might as well poke around see if i cant get a conclusion to this LED nonsense.

Re: Has anyone upgraded the cluster lights?

LEDs are plenty bright enough. Just get the multi-LEDs as mentioned previously. I still haven't gotten around to pulling my cluster. If you take yours apart, please count the number of bulbs needed in the cluster and or HVAC control and let us know what number bulbs they are.
