My motor had a stock block, stock crank, 2 bolt mains studded with straps, L35 rods & TRW pistons. The motor got yanked cuz the oil pump pickup fell out and lost oil pressure. Bearings were toast.
I don't advise spinning the motor that high unless you do a buildup with 4 bolt mains, Eagle (or better rods), forged pistons, and a good flowing heads & cam combo.
These motors are grunt motors, but to make them fast, you have to build them to make more HP. IMO, the next step past a stronger stock rebuild is one with better (not crazy) flowing Vortec heads, mild cam (412/422 style) and spin it to 5300-5500 or so (with the rest of the airflow mods). I spun mine high because I felt a 3-4 shift at that point would do one of 2 things 1)break the trans 2) slow me down.
I spun the motor to 6100rpm on one run where I forgot to lock the converter. 11.2 @ 120
Locked the converter, gained 2-4 mph, and .1 faster I believe (that day), and brought the RPM down 4-500rpm thru the traps.
