How is this possible?

Re: How is this possible?

Technically, in CA it will not pass with the EGR removed because the visual inspection requires verification that all emission control devices are present on the vehicle. Whether the inspector knows what he or she is looking for is another question.

AND even with a EGR it's very unlikely it will pass without a cat. Quite likely a "California" cat.

Re: How is this possible?

Emissions exempt in CT now, and no inspection just VIN verification.

I'll be back to posting more soon as I get back to playing with the trucks. I've been flat out with work and the new house, but the good news is I've got plenty of good working space now with the new toy barn.

I've been burning off some spare parts on Fleabay just because it's so easy to deal with on the fly from my phone. The forum hasn't worked very well with tapatalk for awhile and it doesn't seem like anybody cares enough to fix it.

Heck, I didn't even know what a meme was till early this year. Lol, the evolution of social media

Same here, believe it or not, hahah.

As per the FB page, I am on there every day, and I do post occasionally, but the main jist of being on there is for pics, and if I need an instant response on something. I used photobucket for posting a couple pics on here once... it was a pain in the ass for me. Especially since I completely forgot the password shortly after. In terms of technological posts, I utilize the forum, because a few of the most knowledgeable / experienced older members don't have FB accounts. And to Goodhue's point, the search button on here is very valuable. It has helped me on more than a few occasions.

As per Dave P's point made, the Northeast has become the "main hub" for SyTy activity and ownership. Sportmachines, with a combination of various shops and points of interest across the east coast, as well as local SyTy meets, are a big contributor to that... Carlisle Truck Nationals, especially.

...Then there are hoarders like me with 4 of them in my garages.

Re: How is this possible?

For many, many years the cutoff for biennial inspection was 1975 and older. I believe the cutoff year was recently raised to 1980 and older, but don't hold me to that. I know for fact it isn't "30 years old" etc. It is a specific model year and older. It was 1975 for at least 20 years. I believe there is still a smog inspection required for all models 1966 and newer upon change of ownership. Yes, 1966 and newer. Good luck registering that resto-rod you bought at B-J in California for street use unless all emission components for the model year of the LSx engine are in place and functioning.

There isn't a minimum mileage either. I feel there should be. It would make the State money. Lots of people like myself have one or more seldom driven vehicles that end up on PNO rather than the hassle of smog inspection and pay the now $97 minimum tag fee (in Los Angeles County). Charge $25 for an "odometer verification" and let the guy drive his garage queen a few times a year to C&C type events. Cheaper than the $75-ish smog inspection, IF it passes. How much does a vehicle polute if only driven 1,000 miles a year? Cars that are driven even only a few times a year create "economic activity". Sales tax on gasoline, the tag fees, and if a guy meets-up with 4 buddies for Friday nite Rubies' and have a burger and milkshake after words, that's a $75-100 tab that wouldn't have happened unless they had an "excuse" to get together. In this case bring out the garage queens for an evening. Cars in storage don't accrue a dime in economic activity for years upon years.

Re: How is this possible?

Sorry about the 30 years but here's where I think I got the info. Looks like "40 years" not 30. "Manufactured prior to 1976." (Couldn't do math in my head the first time.:rotf:)

You can get an Historical Vehicle plate if "manufactured after 1922 which are at least 25 years old and of historic interest." Separate from any smog requirements.

x2...and what about mileage driven per year? I think the exempt status here in PA applies to cars driven less than 2,500 miles per year (My syty's always qualify.)

My guess is that California is not so lenient.

Under 5,000 miles a year in pa for emissions exempt.

Re: How is this possible?

There's another aspect I didn't think of last night that makes these trucks appeal to the NE crowd over the West.

Emissions testing.

I don't think thats a major player, it may start to be one now at least in NJ, but they only dropped emissions testing on OBD-1 vehicles as of last May 1st, prior to that it was damn hard to get through emissions. Back in the early 2000's I used to have to take my Ty to a private inspector so I could drop my fuel pressure down so I could pass CO and NOX at Idle. During that period, I was told by multiple shops that NJ testing was 2nd to only California at the time. In face a lot of independent shops had to give up their license because they couldnt afford all the equipment required to perform the inspections any longer. The Green/Gray I bought was only sold because it would no longer pass Maine inspection and cost too much in repairs to make it pass.

Eventually, the NJ dropped the requirement of cars being tested under load (on rollers) and then many years later they dropped safety inspections and just kept emissions, then dropped emissions on 1995 and older vehicles.

My guess is state registrations only showed so many 95 and older vehicles on the road that weren't already Historic or Collector they didn't feel it was needed to waste their time with the sniffer test in the tailpipe since it would take 2-3 times as long to inspect those vehicles than it does an OBD-2 vehicle.

Either way I'm happy, I never have to get my Typhoons inspected again.

This trend of less activity on SyTy.net is happening across many different forums. People are posting on Facebook. I don't complete get it, Facebook is convenient for pictures, memes, video and the general comments, but it is pointless to ask technical questions that become buried after a day and cannot be searched for. I guess some just want instant gratification.
I created the FB Group for a couple different reasons. The first being the fact that a majority of our members were on there already, why not bring everyone together and take advantage of another media source.

As I think its been mentioned in another thread, with all the publicity these trucks have been getting; Clint Eastwood, Jay Leno, Garage Squad, Car Fix, Steve's YouTube video, Mecum, Barrett-Jackson, etc. we need as much exposure as we can get.

Heck, if the forum was actually 100% functional, we would be pulling members in from FB instead of everyone thinking the FB Group is pulling people away from here. People are on FB regardless of this place, everyone has the app, it takes 2 seconds to load it and look, push notifications bring your attention to your post as soon as it happens.... it does have its advantages, and I know I've said it before, but I named the group SyTy.net to help promote the forum, not to hurt it.

The FB Group will never replace the forum unless FB figured out a way to integrate a forum directly into their site. Search blows on FB, shit gets buried faster than your missing ex wife, the only thing FB does take away from is the bullshit that gets posted in the SyTy Lounge, granted its the most popular forum on the site, FB will not replace the Tech forums and it will never have the history and information this forum does.

Emissions cut-off in WA is 25 years and 30 years for the collectors plates (no more tabs).. can't wait for that!!

You can get an Historical Vehicle plate Separate from any smog requirements.

Historical plates do NOT exempt you from the biennial smog inspection if newer than 1976. This is a common misconception. Even the gal at Auto Club was wrong. She suggested I look into it for the Corvette which is eligible for these plates. (I have 8 NCRS Awards for the car. That makes it eligible. Not just any beater 85 Corvette is, even though all 85's are over 25 years old now). When I found that it would still need biennial inspections, I went the register in Mono County route.

So it sounds like the real question is - is somebody working on fixing the forum, or are we leaving it on jackstands as a tribute to these fine automobiles?

Couldn't tell ya, Mark just asked the other day too, Ive been trying to push for it for years now, Ian has a copy of the database with the upgrade running on another machine, no idea what the holdup is on getting it done on the real forum.

Code what?
I have been using Tapatalk for years, nothing about it disappoints me besides having to swipe to load new posts once you open a page. The picture hosting is super easy and private massaging is getting better. Search feature also has been working good for me. No forum complaints here, even if the forum crashed I wouldn't join Facebook. Just not for me....ever

Actually I take that back - the tapatalk wonkiness seems to be fixed. It used to be that if you went into about 1/3 of the forums including all the Members Marketplace stuff they were empty. Progress - awesome.

A lot of people have been ran off by you guys over the years. OG's, newbs, and non-owners, too. All because they weren't part of the "clique". Realize you did this to yourselves.

Really? Because a lot of OG "clique" members no longer participate that much, so...so much for that theory.

And many newbies stay. How do you explain that? Seems to me those who left probably have thin skin or some other problem that prevents them from hanging longer.

The fact that many have been around for a while might be a little intimidating, but we've never discouraged people from staying engaged and becoming part of the "established" community. AND SOME HAVE.

In short, your point in invalid.

:rotf:

And your first post sure does extend a vast sea of knowledge, experience, and wisdom to help out too.

If you want to stick with this theory, go ahead and throw yourself in the mix too..... you see, because of your lack of participation and contribution to maybe try to help someone.....or maybe post up some cool story.....or discover some new info that could be used to better this community.....you instead just hung around in the shadows and watched without opening your mouth to change something and waited for this very moment to make your first post instead. People who dont participate dont really get to bitch and complain IMHO. Ever since the FB group came about, this place has been mostly quiet and absolutely no personal issues other than spam PMs, so it's obvious you've been around longer than Nov 2016 to have come up with your comment.

Being around as long as I have, I can sure tell you that while yes, there are "cliques" to an extent, it sure hasn't stopped me (or others) from being able to make friends across the US and overseas. I also know there are people on here who dont particularly like me, which is completely fine too. I still sleep at night. For the most part, everyone gets along pretty damn well here. This community is what you make of it.

This is the problem right there. Why is it that if someone doesn't want to be treated like shit, they are thinned skinned? One of the most thinned skinned person on this forum throws temper tantrums, talks down to people, and then deletes all of his posts and no one bats an eye. He dissappears for awhile and starts the process all over again. And all this happens just for simple fact that someone simply doesn't agree with him.

Or could it be that these trucks are just fading away in popularity? Vendor support isn't what it used to be from when I first joined. Even some of the vendors have crap customer support. Let's face it, there isn't much money to be made for such a small group of trucks. People sell stuff at good prices and people lowball the crap out of the sellers. Members want the price of SyTys to go up but lowball people selling their trucks. I'd agree that Facebook is a big contributor to the forums losing popularity. Any national meets are held on the east coast, but I'll agree that's not the only factor in that aspect. There are many factors that have built up over the years and now here we are.

Can you cite specific situations where someone (who did have a crap attitude to begin with) was treated like shit? I think you're overstating the problem.

Someone might ask a question, get an honest answer, and realize they've gotten in (with the truck) over their head. That would qualify as thin-skinned and has nothing to do with the treatment they receive here.

We welcome new people all the time so has very little to do with treatment when people leave. Truth is, younger people are buying these trucks and quickly realizing it's no picnic.

(In fact, take a minute and read the newbie section. I think this community goes all out on welcoming new posters)
