Just installed aftermarket parts and now the car won't start!

Over the past 6 months I've been working on my Ty every here and there. I finally finished it, or so I thought, and now the car won't start. Here's a list of what I installed:

PTE 51 Turbo kit
50# injectors
AFPR
3 bar map
Chip from Detroit Turbo
Full Tune Up (plugs, wires, cap & rotor)

Everything seems to be installed correctly. I set the fuel pressure to 45 psi and the car backfired. I tried increasing the fuel pressure, but now the car won't start. It will crank, but it just won't turn over. I haven't installed the walbro fuel pump yet and the gas is about six months old. These are the only things I can think of. Any idea's?

Backfire usually means too much fuel. Recheck your FP

I thought a backfire means not enough fuel. Yes, the plug wires and chip are on right.

check that you put all your wires in the correct firing order

Yup, I agree with Brandon. A backfire is not fuel pres unless it's almost -0- and then it's lean backfire. (Very unlikely.) Double check cyl firing order, timing, wires in proper order on cap. When finished verify that you are, in fact, not 180* out on the dist. Very easy to do.

I haveta say it's the firing order.Doesn't take much to **** that one up (right Morgan?)

If you have pulled the Dist I would check that you're not 180* wrong.

Yes, I agree . Firing order may be out 180*. Also I would check plug wires.Sounds like Spark/fuel related problem. Good Luck!

Perfect as far as it goes but the rotor is not referenced so you could still get things wrong. On my truck, for example, I happen to be a tooth off (from whats shown) so the dist is turned a bit to compensate. My bet is he's just 180 off.

The distributor cap is on correctly. It is seated nicely on top of the distributor. You can't even screw it down when it's installed backwards. I checked the firing order like 3 times because that's what I thought it was. I'll check it again today and see if I find anything. Thanx for the help, guys!

I think you're missing the point. It's possible to have the the wires on correctly (obviously the cap only goes one way) yet the dist rotor (meaning the dist itself) is in wrong so cyls are being fired in the wrong order.

OK, I get it. That's definately a possibility. If that's the problem how do I reset the dist? Also, does anybody reuse that vacuum module that goes on the stock turbo? My turbo doesn't have anywhere to hook it up to.

Re: Just installed aftermarket parts and now the car won't start!

This is how I did when I put my new dist in after I rebuilt the motor.
Maybe I've overdone it. But here it goes.

Take the passanger side valvecover off. Turn motor by hand until #4 valves moves.
Align marks on damper to the 0* mark on indicartor. You now have TDC #1 (Most likely if something isn't way off with damper or timingchain). To be all sure you can buy a TDC indicator. Have a long flathead screwdriver for turning the oilpump to align it right for the dist (if you are spot on 180* wrong its just to turn the rotor 180* with the dist off). Be VERY carefull with the dist out of its place. Make sure you dont have anything loose that can fall into the hole. Vacuumclean around the dist if you can.
Now reinstall the dist. This could be very frustating sometimes to get it seated on the oilpump. The rotor should point something like "quater past five".
Cut a "gash" in the dist bolt head so you can use a flathead screwdriver next time you need to loosen.

my truck was doing the exact same thing yours is doing. the problem for me was the distributor was a tooth off. i pulled the #1 plug, had my brother stick his finger in the plug hole while i was under the truck turning the motor over with a breaker bar on the crank pulley bolt. when he felt continuous pressure building up in the cyl, i brought the mark on the harmonic balancer to the timing tab, bringing the motor to TDC compression on the #1 cylinder. pulled the dist cap and sure enough, the rotor was pointing at the #6 point on the cap. reset the dist so the rotor pointed at the #1 point and it fired right up, HTH

edit: once i get the distributor set, i just kept turning it over with the breaker bar on the crank pulley until the dist engages the oil pump

FYI you can turn the motor over from the top on the alternator.

:screwy: Really? Turn the alternator and it'll turn the engine over? If this works, I gotta assume you're doing it without plugs in....that's a nice little trick to have in the back pocket.
