Knock Sensor R & R

Just wondering if there is an easy way to get at the knock sensor?? It seems there is a solid steel line back there that is making thing difficult.

remove the cap and rotor. if your up to it, remove the hood too.

did it on my ty and stood on top of the motor. saw the knock sensor as clear as day. used some wobble sockets to get the little bastard out.

make sure you torque the new sensor to the right spec...which escapes me at the moment...

In my case I've to remove only the multipurpose bracket which is holding the coil, map sensor and EGR solenoid (if you still have one). This way you can remove the connector and use a big deep soket (around 22mm, but I'm not sure) and some extension to get it out. Don't break the connector, you should push it on the smaller sides to get it off.

On a side not, I've no IC lines up there, so this could make my life easier. Also when you put back your new knock sensor, use the proper torque to tigthen it (around 18Nm, but check it in the manual), because it's sensibility (sp?) depends on it...

I pretty much agree,

Removed my:
cap n rotor
coil and bracket
and loosened the wiper motor

2 swivels and 2 wobble extensions.

DO NOT OVERTORQUE or you'll be doin it twice.
~15 ft/lbs is all it takes to seat the sensor

While we are on the subject....
I don't think anyone mentioned it but the reason for the torque spec is sensitivity of the sensor.
Overtighten it and it will be more prone to pick up false knock.

If you have a truck that is picking up verified false knock you can loosen the sensor and/or use thread tape to reduce it's sensitivity. The stock ESC calibration was at that torque and on a stock motor. Once you start changing internal engine components to possibly noisier parts the stock esc system leaves something to be desired. Some pistons and rocker arms are notorious for causing false knock issues.

And the false knock I am experiencing could be due to internals on the motor. Hmmmm.... oh well, we'll get that bastard out :eek:
