Looking for info on old chip box??

My buddy recently bought a 93 Ty from the original owner. Unfortunately the original owner had a stroke and is not able to Communicate what all was done to the truck. So far I can see it has an aftermarket turbo, no markings as far as I can see. It has a billion gauges including a wide band o2, a very nice mandrel bent single exhaust, and also has a funky "ultimate chip" I think that's the name I was given. The injectors appear to be stock red tops. We do not have the key and it says 18psi street (T1)

The truck will get about 8-10psi boost, and when it feels like it, it will go around 15psi and bleed off. I'm thinking the wastegate actuator is possibly going bad? Other than the boost bleeding off, the truck is extremely clean and runs very good, idle is perfect and it's at 89k miles. Besides all the above mentioned, what the hell do I do about this chip box and does anyone have instructions?? If I can't get a key I can open it and I'm sure bypass the key, but is it worth the headache? I'm a grand national guy, have no issues tuning a turbo car or truck but I need to know what's what first! Any help is appreciated!!

I can't post a pic???

Re: Looking for info on old chip box??

You could swap it out for a TurboTweek chip...

That's the plan but in the mean time I'm curious. I would imagine with the key on you could switch between pre set tunes with the red button?

Yep. Had 3 boost levels and 3 timing levels.. So like

T115 Timing 1(least aggressive 15 psi)
T215
T315

T116
T216
T316

...
...
...

Also had a valet mode and maybe a mode that didn't allow it to run at all Security IIRC... It's actually not a bad chip..

Thank you! Wish I could post a pic but I'm assuming since I'm new, posting pics comes after a certain amount of posts are reached?

Re: Looking for info on old chip box??

Ok figured pics out. We are no way seeing 18psi nor do I want to see it. But it sometimes will hit 15 and bleed off to 10 psi or less.

This "Bleed off" is it audible ? or do you just see the boost levels peak then drop off real quick.

If I were you, I would be under the hood looking at the intercooler coupler from the turbo to the intercooler.

Inspect the spiral wound black "elephant trunk" if its still on there. *Some times* there could be a issue there. The trunk can tear or in some cases start to unravel?

Next area to inspect would be the throttle body to intercooler coupler. I am pretty sure you would hear a louder tea-pot type whistle on this one.

If its not that, a can of brake-cleaner or carb/choke cleaner and spraying the stuff in gasket areas might help. Lower intake to heads, lower intake to upper plenum, upper plenum to throttle body.

Also how are the vac lines?

Re: Looking for info on old chip box??

The up pipe from turbo to intercooler is aftermarket as is the turbo. It's tight. No audible air leak but I will double check with some carb choke cleaner next time he's over here. The coupler from intercooler looked good but I'll double check. I'm thinking wastegate puck or actuator as the truck sat for the past 4 years in a garage with no play time. I know it's common on the GN, so I'll check all mentioned. Thanks!

Re: Looking for info on old chip box??

What type of wastegate does it have? Is the boost solenoid connected and is the ECM actually controlling the boost?

Re: Looking for info on old chip box??

I did see the solenoid was still hooked up. It still has an internal wastegate, so I'll take a better look at the actuator when I see it again. Been on my sick bed on and off for 2 months. No energy right now. I'll post results!
