Made the drive

...just under 2000 miles, from PA to AZ in my new baby. The truck handled like a champ and the seller was right on with everything we had corresponded with. It took me a minute to get used to the torque converter that was installed....who needs coffee at 6 am when you can have first and second gear providing a nice, violent BANG when shifting (apparently the first owner also installed a shift kit when he rebuilt the tranny). Unfortunately, I didn't pass Phoenix emissions testing  I'm going to have it checked out tomorrow....the previous owner said it might be because the ECG line is plugged or a catalytic converter issue. Did I mention it's hot as hell here?

Sorry, it's the EGR valve which might be plugged. As for the readings, the hydrocarbons "final reading" came in at 260.

Re: Made the drive

HC is unburnt fuel. 260 though isn't bad at all, you had to be close.

If the cat is bad, a new one will clean it up like a champ. You can also lower the fuel pressure, throw some alky in the gas tank, etc. and get you through.

I don't think EGR would cause it unless it is stuck open. In fact I would suspect the computer never turns the EGR on during a typical emission test cycle.

Re: Made the drive

unless you know that its been tuned up i.e. cap, rotor, ignition module, plugs(NGK UR5 these helped me pass smog) and wires, then a cat will definately clear it up. also take into consideration that the ignition components on our trucks are crappy so uprading the coil is a good idea also.

EGR only comes on at steady cruising speeds under load.

Re: Made the drive

That shift kit and converter issue is really just a strong SyTy trans. It takes some getting used to but it shifts harder than any of my shift kits did in the past. Congrats. The drive home in something new (to you) is awsome. I flew out to Ohio from Chicago and drove it back in under 6 hours @ 80 most of the way.

I thought I had a long drive home! I drove my new SY over 1500 miles from Philly back home to Texas a few weeks back. I haven't tried to to get my inspection yet ,but from what you all are saying the lack of an EGR valve should not be an issue with only the two speed idle test?

How long did it take you? I just drove from Dallas to Reno (about 1800 miles) in 26 hours...but that was only stopping for gas and food twice. It was pretty cool being in 3 time zones in one day.

Congrats! I envy you...and every other SyTy owner out there

The drive was about 28 hours or so, I too stopped twice, once in St. Louis and again in Albuquerque. Went through quite a bit of rain along the way and was still amazed at how well the truck stayed planted to the pavement. Got the truck in the shop now getting a cat put on and a fuel injector cleaning. Just discovered the pop off valve leaking air pretty badly last night too.....and the obsession begins. ;)
