Re: Magnaflow Catcon pics....

I am gonna email the seller and see if I can get a cat and 4 flanges, that way I can make a matcihng "test pipe".

That is an awesome price, usually only the off brand converters are that cheap on ebay.

Re: Magnaflow Catcon pics....

You get free shipping on them too, which is a nice bonus. Summit and everyone else will hit you up with at least a $8.95 handling charge.

I might have to purchse two of those for my new vehicle.

Re: Magnaflow Catcon pics....

funny you mention this. I just had this exact catalytic converter installed the other day. I actually bought it from the same guy too. RPM installed it as part of a full 3" custom exhaust system they made for me (which turned out awesome, btw)

so far so good. I just got home from smog testing with it (as a new resident to california). I failed visual because the guy was the Hitler of smog (I've never heard of a smog guy checking timing, and following every emissions related hose checking for cracks & leaks) -- but anyway, the sniffer test passed with flying colors, not even close to an issue, and I didn't really do anything special other than drive around for an hour before the test and disconnect the IC pump.. with a 160 theromostat and no a/c too.

just note w/ a stock downpipe u will need a 2.25" - 3" transition to mate up... also it was a bit snug in the stock location so we mounted it further back.

Yeah sounds like that guy got carried away. Well what part of the visual did you fail on? also I think if it were me I would tell the guy that I will tell every one I know not to get smoged at his place for the way he was doing such an over kill on your truck.

actually, with a Syclone, you'll need a 2.5" - 3" transition from the stock downpipe to mate up with your 3" components. just got through doing this myself.

well I didn't have a charcoal canister so I bought one from a junkyard and made it look hooked up without actually being hooked up. at first he checked the hoses for leaks and said one of them is defective cause it had a crack and needs to be fixed. then checking the fuel tank hose he found it ended at the frame rail. I also have a pcv valve cover breather, but I heard other people passed with it so I figured I'd take my chances. I was going to disconnect the tan wire as suggested here, but didn't. I was really shocked to sewe him hook up a timing light and check it.

so anyway, he gave me a fail ("tampered") for the canister and the valve cover breather. if anyone knows how I can get or make valve cover -> intake assembly cheap let me know.

I couldn't believe they spent well over an hour on my truck. it was a "valero gas" smog special, the cheapest guys in town with coupon, so I figured some guy that doesnt speak english would just rush it through...

have you guys had an easier time in CA? if so maybe I should just not bother fixing anything and try a different place.

I'll try to get some pics up soon of the RPM custom SS exhaust. they did an awesome job with it and it looks & sounds great, so glad I didn't go with the atr prefab.

Re: Magnaflow Catcon pics....

I have to laugh at the timing issue. I had a CA smog in Jan and, although the owner knew what a Sy was the kid doing the work had no idea. He hooked up a light and pointed it at the dampener and then unhooked it. There wasn’t a darn thing to see, I hadn’t highlighted it yet! This was bone stock at the time with the tan wire connected so it was advanced anyway. Oh yea, I passed.

Re: Magnaflow Catcon pics....

man what a farse. Passes sniff yet they can still fail you on visual. BS BS BS BS. I dont see why the state gives a crap how it passes as long as it does.

I have a test only smog guy who will ignore all the visual as long as I pass the sniff test. Hopefully he hasnt been busted yet.

For the next test Im going to program my vin on a friends stock '99 S10 with tunercat and ask the guy to ignore the vin number on the windshield. Then I can do whatever I want with my truck.

3" on a Sy is a BREEZE. i went with a 3" dynomax welded ultraflow, about 2 feet of straight tubing and a turn down out of the dynomax, before the axle. this combo gives a very slight rumble in the cab. turn down after the axle (another 2-3ft of straight tubing, out of the dynomax) gives almost NO noise at all.

btw...invest in some of the band clamp style clamps. these make exhaust removal VERY easy. they also have a better chance of making your exhaust leak free.
