need head rebuild vortec or stock?

I need to do a head job on my TY as it smokes on start up. I figure that since I have to spend the money I might as well do it on a set of vortec's rather than a stock rebuild. What I need to know is if all vortec heads are the same or are there casting numbers that are preferable for our application. Secondly, I understand that I can send the lower intake to RPM to have it converted, is there anything I need to do to the heads themselves, other than port matching? My truck is stock in all regards right now but I plan on ordering a new turbo along with the intake. I see that (Took)?? had the springs machined in one of his posts; can I skip this step if I am using the stock cam?

smoke at start up is usually just valve seal, cheap and easy to fix. don't even have to remove the heads

Re: need head rebuild vortec or stock?

Thanks for the info, I suspected that it could be that or the valve guides, or both. How often are the guides the problem on these engines?

Let's assume my wife has already accepted the fact that I (NEED) a new top end and is willing to cut a cheque, lol, can anyone answer my casting number question?

vortec are the only way to go,but in your case i would just do the seals

772 is the casting # most seek out. Personally, Ild go for the 01+ heads, they come with the LS1 style valve train. Not sure on the cast # though.

if i could cut a cheque for a new top end i'd do bowties but thats a pretty big check. get the 01 castings, get your intake modified, heads redrilled, there's a thread around here somewhere with a piece by piece breakdown to do it. i don't think valve guides are really an issue. valve seals cost like 12 dollars and take a couple hours down time
