Need help with steering shaft install

Anyone in The Los Angeles Area or vicinity that can help me install this jeep steering shaft. I have looked at all the videos and write ups and I cant do this myself. My mechanic is not familiar with these and is telling me that he would have to pull the whole steering column out and even than that it probably wont work. Let me know how much you would charge or if you know of a competent mechanic that has done this before and can do the install.
PM me or post here if you have any info. much appreciated!

I would stop going to your mechanic. He doesn't seem to care about your business. This at most is a 1 hour job. If you go to see another mechanic, take them the video or instructions so that they see how it is done.

If you've seen the vid and have the instructions, why not do it yourself? Jack up truck, insert jack stands, pull the wheel well, pull the shaft. Reverse to install...

Yea it sounds like you didnt take the plastic sleeve off so the shaft wont collapse far enough. +1 for your mechanic being

The shaft is collapsing far enough so I dont think that is it.I would love to do this myself especially since I have done more stuff to my truck than I thought I was capable of thanks to this site. The problem is I was using my parents place to work on my truck and they just moved last week to a new place that doesnt have a driveway. My place I cant work at but I also didnt know that the wheel well has to be removed. I appreciate the input but if anyone can still help that would be great.

Re: Need help with steering shaft install

I hear ya on the "no place to work". I'm moving in a week or so to a place with only a dirt and pine needle driveway. I'm thrilled about that.

I dont live in your area, but I would do a google search for shops that specialize in turbo cars. I'm sure there are a ton of those around you. Maybe even a better idea is a 4X4 shop or a Jeep only custom shop. They will definately know what to do.

Your best bet is definately doing it yourself, but with no place to do it, I more than understand how difficult that would make it.

Re: Need help with steering shaft install

So I am going to try this install thanksgiving weekend at my dads in northern San Diego. I watched the video and it helps a lot but that truck is stripped down and mine is basically stock. i just have been so apprehensive about doing this because it really looks like it will be tough getting in there. My question is what do I need to remove in order to install this? do i need to take the wheel well out and/or anything else?

I didn't remove the wheel well.... just unbolt the two bolts that hold the cruise control actuator and move it out of the way, remove the PCV hose from the air filter box, and you'll have plenty of room.
Make sure the wheels are straight ahead when you park it.... it really is easy, you're just intimidating yourself :D

No prob... when you go to slide the joint over the steering column shaft, put a piece of masking tape on the column at the place you think it should slide up to... you really need to make sure the shaft is fully seated on the upper and lower shafts. Getting it to slide up onto the column may take a couple of whacks against a bar or something slid through the uni-joint. If you have any problems just PM me and I'll walk you through it.
